To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

I have vaped for years and never set a fire alarm off anywhere, nor left a lingering smell.

People get very tetchy about vapes on here, much more so than people IRL so I expect hoards of posters telling you your daughter will kill them if they have to stay in the hotel room after her as they are just so sensitive to smells.
In reality the very worst thing she will leave behind is a slightly fruity smell, more than likely there will be nothing at all that people would notice.
Technically she is wrong to vape anywhere it isn't allowed but realistically she isn't doing any harm.
YABVU to 'tell her off' as she is an adult and will make her own decisions.

It won't kill me but I properly hate the smell. It's vile.

Justsayit123 · 15/12/2024 10:52

Your dd is a stupid cow and I hope the hotel realises so they charge her a cleaning fee.

WatchOutForBabyHaggis · 15/12/2024 10:52

It's irrelevant - if it's banned then it's banned. OPs DD is being very entitled/childish

Meh. I'm sure we've all harmlessly broken a rule or two in our time. If you haven't then you're different to probably 99% of the human race so a massive well done to you 👏

What your best friend won't tell you.

dreamer24 · 15/12/2024 10:59

She is an adult and can do what she likes

Except use her own debit or credit card to secure the booking on the hotel room, needs her mum for that one. Funny that. But yeah she can do what she likes after mum's paid, right? She's an adult, after all. 🙄

All this ‘you can’t possibly tell her off as she is an adult’ makes me laugh When my 18 and 21y olds are at home and behaving badly, of course I tell them off. Esp if I am paying!

Yep. This x a million. Independent "adults" when it suits aren't they.

Cynic17 · 15/12/2024 11:00

If she is paying for her room, that's OK and she can pay the charge when they fine her.
If you are paying, OP, then I think you are right to tell her off. And if you get fined, make sure she pays it!

dreamer24 · 15/12/2024 11:02

How childish is she being? Taking up vaping when shes never smoked smacks of keeping up with her mates at the local club!!

My DD(18) did the same - never smoked but vapes now apparently.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 15/12/2024 11:04

Definitely not unreasonable to tell her off! What a selfish thing if her to do and I would be upset at her lack of contrition. She clearly has difficulty understanding right from wrong and it’s a parent’s responsibility to address that. I completely disagree that an adult shouldn’t be told off by an adult. Especially within a family, this is how we
learn to live and behave in a community.

The fire alarm is unlikely to be set off. The types of alarms that can possibly detect vapour are the optical ones. It can set them off if she's blowing huge, huge clouds and the optical alarm is very sensitive - as in, sensitive enough that steam from a shower or kettle would also set it off.

Is she the type of vaper who makes massive clouds?

Even if she is, she's probably covering it, which would also stop it being set off.

MN does seem to be confused about how vapour from vapes is not smoke. It's very different from smoke. It's more like steam.

Have you not seen the 2 posts from people who've had hotel fire alarms go off due to vaping? And I can vouch for the fact that steam from the shower can set the alarm off in some hotels, having been evacuated from a Travelodge at 3am due to someone showering with the bathroom door open. Some hotel alarms are indeed very sensitive to steam.

whiskeytangofox · 15/12/2024 11:07

It’s irrelevant what age she is. You’re entitled to tell her that she’s not to Vape when in your company, especially as your paying for this trip.

EmmaEmEmz · 15/12/2024 11:12

I'm quite a heavy vaper and stay in hotels at least twice a month. Premier inns, travelodges, posh ones.

Never set any smoke alarm off.

I've got a smoke alarm at home that is possible to set off with a really steamy shower. I have been vaping daily at home for years and I've never heard so much as a disappointed beep out of that alarm.

whiskeytangofox · 15/12/2024 11:18

I feel sorry for all these people who vape who wrongly believe that others can’t smell the sickly smell lingering on them.

I guess they’re no different to ordinary smokers in that regard. Completely nose blind! 👃

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/12/2024 11:23

@QuintessentialDragon I've been evacuated from hotels to stand in the street at least four times over the hundreds of nights I've spent in hotels. Twice in London, once in Copenhagen and once in Yorkshire, if you'd like the details to back up my experience. Probably another half dozen times the alarm has gone off but stopped before I've been dressed and ready to leave the room. The only time an actual reason has been given was Copenhagen which was a faulty sensor (it went off numerous times through the night).

You've been extraordinarily lucky never to have an alarm go off in a building full of people showering with the bathroom door open, spraying aerosols, smoking, vaping, covering the alarm sensors with socks so they can smoke/vape 'undetected' (not realising that restricting air to the alarm sets it off).

To the vapers that think it doesn't leave a smell, behind bless you, you sweet summer children.

Sassybooklover · 15/12/2024 11:23

Many hotel smoke alarms are now set up to detect vape smoke. So she may set off the smoke alarm and in turn the fire alarms! I wouldn't want to be in her shoes if the entire hotel has to be evacuated, and the fire brigade called. The smoke detectors etc are set up in such a way, the hotel would be able to tell where the alarm originated! Not only is she being foolish but she's being selfish too. All you can do is tell her, if she ignores you advice, then let her get on with it. So far she's been lucky, but if in the future she does set off a smoke alarm/fire alarms, she will then need to deal with the consequences of her actions - after all that's part of being an adult!! Tell her not to call you, as you won't be interested!!

Squishysquishmallow · 15/12/2024 11:26

#1 of things that absolutely did happen right there!!!

The explanation from the hotel was that someone had been vaping in their room.

Premier inns often have signs saying to keep bathroom doors closed while taking a shower as the vapour can set the alarms off too.

24th May 2022 Gatwick North

Would you like me to post the photo I took of everyone stood outside in the dark with kids in their arms?

Mymanyellow · 15/12/2024 11:32

We had this at work. I work in supported living and the alarm kept going off. We had the company out to check all working ok. We couldn’t work it out. Turns out someone was vaping in their room.

Nolegusta · 15/12/2024 11:43

QuintessentialDragon · 15/12/2024 10:41

I stay in hotels at least twice a month, every month, sometimes more, due to work and personal travel.

I have always vaped, vape and will continue to vape in all the rooms. DGAF about those who don't like it, not my circus and all that.

No alarms were ever set off. Including the Premier Inn's. Also I've never been evacuated and never heard about anyone being evacuated 'in the middle of the night to stand shivering in the street'. Seems to happen on MN at alarming rate, though? How odd.

Are you this entitled generally or just regarding vaping? 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Nolegusta · 15/12/2024 11:44

Dobest · 15/12/2024 10:43

Some people need to also realise that if a hotel has rules regarding what is permitted and what isn't, then you accept those rules when you check in.

"Rules are for the guidance of wise fools, or something..." -Bernard Wilde.

Does that apply to all rules or just the ones you benefit from breaking?

She's not harmlessly breaking a rule.

coffeeandteav · 15/12/2024 12:04

The cleaning products and aerosol are a
lot worse.
I don't vape never have but not something I could get worked up over. A window open for 5 minutes would air out the room from peoples smelly sleep anyway.

We have kids vape in the toilets at school ( whole other thread scandal , its rife. )Only once has a fire alarm gone off and that was because it was a dab pen.

mandarinchocolate · 15/12/2024 12:08

If the hotel can smell the vaping in the room you will be charged a deep clean fee.
I presume they have your bank card details

Wetellyourstory · 15/12/2024 12:10

She is an adult and can do what she likes

And this, along with others who think it’s acceptable to vape in areas where signs request you don’t, is what is fundamentally wrong in our society. No, as adults we can’t do whatever we like. There are rules in place in certain situations to ensure safety, not infringing on rights of others to enjoy their surroundings, respect for other people etc. If people are brought up being told you can do whatever you want as an adult, no wonder our society is full of such entitled, selfish people.

For those you aren’t bothered about possibly setting off smoke alarms and the fire brigade having a wasted call, just hope it’s not your family caught in a house fire they can’t attend as you’ve decided to vape.
