To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

I always vape in hotel rooms as does my husband and never ever has an alarm gone off, it's not smoke, no worst than using can of hairspray, and yes I know we're not meant to but we do, husband also vapes in local pub and barman turns blind eye, we're dreadful people!!

Why would you do it when you know the next guests might not appreciate the smell of the vape? I’d have to change rooms as I couldn’t sleep in a room with that smell.

MonsieurBlobby · 15/12/2024 18:28

I think at 19 she's old enough to decide for herself whether to follow the rule. She's also old enough to deal with any fines etc that might come your way because of the vaping.

I’d be tempted to turn her in to hotel management so she gets hit with the fine. She needs to learn a harsh lesson about being inconsiderate and about the habit in general.

Catch yourself on. She's vaping not shooting up.

First of all it's a watermelon elf bar, very little smell, no different to perfume, do you ever smell hairspray or perfume when you enter a hotel room, no, because room is cleaned and aired, please don't tell me you would smell it because you really wouldn't.

CatamaranViper · 15/12/2024 18:34

Depending on the type of fire detectors in the room, she may set off the alarm. My old hotel could have the alarm triggered by shower steam.

I remember being on a hen do once and we did some games in one of the hotel bedrooms. There were about 5 people sat on the windowsill smoking out of the window. When they inevitably got caught, I refused to chip in for the fine. Yes going up and down 6 flights of stairs for a tab is a pain in the arse, but that's not my fault nor am I paying for it.

I'm quite a heavy vaper and stay in hotels at least twice a month. Premier inns, travelodges, posh ones.

Never set any smoke alarm off.

Of course you didn't, it's an urban myth, tye chances of an alarm gping off because someone is vaping is laughable

Havalona · 15/12/2024 18:41

Vapes do not set off fire alarms. They do not emit smoke. The kettle in the room would set off the alarm if vapes could, both emit vapour.

The smell does not linger. Fruity smells can be from shower gels etc.

I don't vape but don't care if anyone vapes. You will both be fine.

I will say that she is an idiot for telling you in the first place though. That's an issue for sure!

Jc2001 · 15/12/2024 18:41

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 15/12/2024 09:59

She would have to be vaping at a rate to set off the fire alarm it's no different to aerosols that people use. Never vaped but don't have a problem with other people doing it.

Have you ever walked behind someone who is vaping? It's not the same as a short puff of an aerosol can, which is typically what happens with deodorant / hairspray etc. There a huge clouds of vapour with vaping.

They can and do set off smoke alarms and they stink as well. It's unpleasant and very selfish to vape in enclosed spaces, especially where it's prohibited.

If it was my DD she'd be paying for the hotel room* and paying for any fines incurred. If she's old enough to feel like she can break the rules, she can pay her way.

*If the room is already on her card then leave her to it and she can face any consequences.

As a non vaper I can definitely smell it on an enclosed space - it lingers on hard surfaces and fabrics.

And do you also smell perfume, hairspray, deodorant, sorry but I dont believe you, I only started vaping last year when I quit smoking but husband vaping for last 4 years and never have I ever smelled it apart from at the time he's doing it, so no way if hotel room is cleaned at 11 and next guests check in at 4 where or four would that smell still be there, I'd love to know how many people have ever complained to a manager that they got a vape smell in their room, of course I'm sure now everyone is going to come back and say they absolutely did🤣 oh and our younger kids don't even know we vape, and constantly on our laps and pulling out of us. Strange that!!

Except it doesn't and you definitely can't smell it.

We’ll have to agree to differ - I can smell vapes- they are a horrible smell.

The watermelon has a lovely smell, just saying, pineapple not bad either!!

  1. an Elfbar won’t set off the alarm
  2. It will not leave a lingering smell any more than someone farting or spraying perfume
  3. She is an adult and can do what she likes

Some people on this thread need to catch themselves on as it’s clear they have no idea what they’re talking about.

But if the hotel has a rule, she shouldn't do it. You sound as entitled as the daughter.

OP, my son vapes, I don't have an issue with vaping as such but what would annoy me is that she is blatantly doing something she had been asked not to, and doesn't think the rules should apply to her. Her attitude would be pissing me right off.

Chances are your son if he is a vaper he would have no problem vaping in hotel room, from what I see with vapers including myself unfortunately it's never really out of our hands!!

It doesn’t. Or at least no more than any other smell.

It's disgusting, I can't stand the smell of them. I'd say to her if that's what she wants to do, if any fines come your way then she's paying for it.

I think we can safely say there won't be a fine🤔

Inextremis · 15/12/2024 19:51

I vape, but I don't vape in hotel rooms - mainly because I worry about setting the alarm off. The thing I do not understand here (and I am not defending vaping where it's not allowed), is posters referring to 'the' smell of vapes. In my experience there is no singular smell - I have vapes (I mix my own liquid) that smell of coffee, or chocolate, or strawberries - and many other flavours/scents. If I were to walk into a hotel room and get a whiff of coffee, I wouldn't think 'vape' - so what is this smell that people experience and dislike so much? I admit to not liking peach smells much, but I can't imagine ever complaining that my hotel room smells a bit peachy...

StillTryingToKeepGoing · 15/12/2024 19:56

Vaping absolutely can and does set off fire alarms. Been there, witnessed that. ( person vaping was in a small space and there was visible vapour. They weren’t just having a quick puff).

Wellingtonspie · 15/12/2024 19:58

I find it hard to believe those people who say they don’t leave a smell. You can smell it down the street walking sometimes and not see the culprit so I bet it does stick. It’s a horrid sticky sweet smell. Same as how weed lingers when the puffer can be long gone.

But seriously can people not go a while without a vape, I swear it’s worse than smoking in that sense. People have to legally go outside to smoke in hotels and pubs yet vapers just seem to puff puff everywhere like they cannot go 30 Minutes. Seen one chap in the school playground puffing away.

I don’t vape. 🤷‍♀️

Doitrightnow · 15/12/2024 20:03

The smell is rank, but whether it lingers or not, the point is that the establishment request no one vapes in the rooms. It's lazy, rude, disrespectful and entitled to do so. I'd be furious if anyone vaped in my house if I'd asked them not to.

I'd be ashamed of my daughter and tempted to dob her in to pay the cleaning fee.

What cleaning fee?? People do lots of things they're not meant to, vaping is just another one. Human nature. Also why would people vape in your house if you asked them not to, what sort of friends do you have that would do that?
