To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

I'm sorry OP but she sounds incredibly selfish and entitled.
And also not very clever or adult.

Tink3rbell30 · 15/12/2024 10:05

How embarrassing. She needs to have some respect, she's a bit old to be vaping for no reason aswell it looks so silly.

Nolegusta · 15/12/2024 10:08

She shouldn't be vaping at all in a hotel room, so you're not wrong to mention that. She needs to take her horrible habit outside.

I find it very difficult to believe it's possible to set the fire alarm off with an Elfbar.

I also find it really difficult to believe that a slight lingering fruity scent could cause so much anguish. A walk down the cleaning products aisle in the supermarket must have people close to convulsions.

We stayed in a Premier Inn once before a vvv early flight. At 12:30am the entire hotel had to evacuate due to fire alarms being activated

How on earth do you know this didn't happen?

Well you are unreasonable to tell another adult off. Putting all the information to her, such as residue left on surfaces and smoke alarm being triggered so she can make an informed decision is fine but don't go on, she's an adult and didn't need to tell you in the first place

I'll wager it's OP's credit card that has been taken as security, not her DD

It is my card yes.

Some cruise lines now allow vaping in cabins. Cruise ships, for obvious reasons have highly sensitive smoke alarms and they aren’t being set off by it or it wouldn’t be allowed!

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 10:18

If it makes any difference, DD uses Elfbar vapes.

YANBU and I’d be so pissed off at myDD for being so selfish. It’s disgusting and yes we can smell that sickly lingering fruity smell ugh it stinks and so do vapers.

OP is an establishment that doesn't allow vaping, it's irrelevant what other establishments allow.

clarrylove · 15/12/2024 10:19

Having recently stayed in a hotel with a 1am fire alarm evacuation due to a vaper, please don't do it. Stood in a freezing car park for 30mins in PJs, parents holding screaming babies etc is not fun! Tell her not to be so selfish.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 15/12/2024 10:20

Just make it clear that she'll be paying if it is detected and there is a fine

Make it about her and the real world, not her and you.

Hoppinggreen · 15/12/2024 10:20

I would tell her off if she gets chucked out or charged for extra cleaning shes paying it herself

Nolegusta · 15/12/2024 10:20

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 10:16

It is my card yes.

In that case you are perfectly allowed to tell her to stop voting because presumably it'll be your card they charge the fine to.

The fire alarm is unlikely to be set off. The types of alarms that can possibly detect vapour are the optical ones. It can set them off if she's blowing huge, huge clouds and the optical alarm is very sensitive - as in, sensitive enough that steam from a shower or kettle would also set it off.

Is she the type of vaper who makes massive clouds?

Even if she is, she's probably covering it, which would also stop it being set off.

MN does seem to be confused about how vapour from vapes is not smoke. It's very different from smoke. It's more like steam.

It's irrelevant - if it's banned then it's banned. OPs DD is being very entitled/childish to not use designated smoking areas.

FatLarrysBanned · 15/12/2024 10:25

I'm another one who has been evacuated from a hotel room in the early hours due to someone vaping. It does happen.

Onlycoffee · 15/12/2024 10:25

Treat her like you would any other adult you were travelling with. Would you tell off a colleague, your inlaws, your best pal?

It's good practice for the coming years.

roundsquares · 15/12/2024 10:26
  1. an Elfbar won’t set off the alarm
  2. It will not leave a lingering smell any more than someone farting or spraying perfume
  3. She is an adult and can do what she likes

Some people on this thread need to catch themselves on as it’s clear they have no idea what they’re talking about.

If my CC was linked to their room then, yes, I'd ask them not to risk us being fined by breaking rules.

DismissiveAgain · 15/12/2024 10:29

All this ‘you can’t possibly tell her off as she is an adult’ makes me laugh When my 18 and 21y olds are at home and behaving badly, of course I tell them off. Esp if I am paying! And they also tell me off on the very rare occasions I am wrong ;-) MN has a v odd idea about how parents should behave towards their kids, on the morning they turn 18!

Of course she shouldn’t be vaping if it risks a fine/your hotel stay.

Some people need to also realise that if a hotel has rules regarding what is permitted and what isn't, then you accept those rules when you check in.

QuintessentialDragon · 15/12/2024 10:41

I stay in hotels at least twice a month, every month, sometimes more, due to work and personal travel.

I have always vaped, vape and will continue to vape in all the rooms. DGAF about those who don't like it, not my circus and all that.

No alarms were ever set off. Including the Premier Inn's. Also I've never been evacuated and never heard about anyone being evacuated 'in the middle of the night to stand shivering in the street'. Seems to happen on MN at alarming rate, though? How odd.
