To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

All statements said by someone who vapes! 😂😂

I don’t vape and I agree with @Boomer55 😀

Just to play devils advocate Isn’t that how most people started smoking in the past, at some point you have to have done one without the other!

Yep. If it wasn't vapes it would be cigarettes, like it was when I was a teenager.

I'm not in a hurry for that environment to return. Plus, the whole reason we don't get cigarette smoke all over everyone and everything these days is because of vapes. Things used to smell a lot worse than this.

People are so sanctimonious and judgemental!
I personally have never known a vape trigger a fire alarm. Maybe the large, belching out clouds of vapour ones would but not a standard small vape.
Nor do standard, small vapes leave a detectable smell behind.
She's alone in the room so not affecting anyone else.
So - I'd be fine with it.
She didn't have to tell you - you'd have been none the wiser.
She's honest and upfront ... and vaping ... not mainlining heroin.
There are worse things I can assure you.

So you think rules (or the law) do not apply in certain cases.
This is why this country is shite; people who are as thick as mince, or just plain ignorant (as in rude ignorant, not ignorant as in unaware of the facts/issue/protocol) think they know so much better than those with an education and life experience who are paid for their expertise.

Some cruise lines now allow vaping in cabins. Cruise ships, for obvious reasons have highly sensitive smoke alarms and they aren’t being set off by it or it wouldn’t be allowed!

Cruising and vaping say so much about a person

I'm quite a heavy vaper and stay in hotels at least twice a month. Premier inns, travelodges, posh ones.

Never set any smoke alarm off.

Such a wonderful contributor to society...

That’s what I was saying to the previous poster who was sanctimonious about OPs DD vaping!

Such a silly statement, its laughable

CannotWaitForSummervibes · 18/12/2024 09:09

Well, she’s an adult so she can make her decisions, but that includes paying fines if she is caught. In future I would get her to pay for her own room on her own card, in case she is fined.
btw, she’s wrong about the smell. It won’t have disappeared. But that’s her addiction brain talking to her (and possibly vapes also affect one’s sense of smell, like cigarettes do?). Vapers who say the smell disappears are clearly not aware of how badly vapes stink.

Dwappy · 18/12/2024 09:28

SOME vapes stink. As I said upthread, I used to vape a flavourless nicotine vape. Absolutely zero smell. Very little actual “smoke” from it as well. I asked many people about the smell. Not one person could smell anything at all. Even if they were sat next to me.

I agree the sickly sweet vapes don’t smell pleasant. I tried using them years ago and they made me feel ill. So I’m not blind to it. But firstly, not all vapes smell like that. Secondly, despite the fact I acknowledge the smelly ones aren’t pleasant, they really don’t linger long at all after the smoke has dispersed.

pimplebum · 18/12/2024 09:32

on a school trip once the kids who smoked got fines £250 for extra cleaning in USA
I’d be more upset that she is so stressed and addicted that she can’t take a walk out side

YABU — stop being such a nag mother, my god. She’s not a baby and this only has the opposite of the desired effect.

FormidableMizzP · 18/12/2024 11:07

YANBU. Well done 👏 She needs to understand what a fire risk the vapes are! They have batteries that heat the vape liquid and can explode. DD is being very irresponsible, and not only ignorant about the harm to her health but also the hazard she poses to others. If the vape caught fire and burned down the hotel, 'oh sorry I didnt know' just won't cut it - she'll end up in court. As parents all we can do is inform them once they're 18+, then it's up to them.

You're incorrect that there's any real chance of an Elfbar exploding.

It's the same likelihood that any other lithium-ion battery will randomly explode i.e. vanishingly unlikely.

She sounds horrid :( I find most people who vape to be so inconsiderate. I'm walking around doing my food shop and people are vaping inside, at the cinema-vaping, on the bus/train- vaping. People are so addicted to these things I don't even know if they realise they're doing it indoors which is illegal!
I'm pregnant and trying to avoid second hand smoke but people just don't care!

She’s an adult. Leave her to it she will have to deal with the consequences

Parryotter · 18/12/2024 12:30

YANBU! How selfish of your daughter!
I can’t believe the amount of people saying the poster can’t tell her 19 year old daughter off. She absolutely shouldn’t be vaping in the room which I presume her mum has paid for and will be liable for if she gets fined.

Emmz1510 · 18/12/2024 15:17

HPandthelastwish · 15/12/2024 09:37

Well you are unreasonable to tell another adult off. Putting all the information to her, such as residue left on surfaces and smoke alarm being triggered so she can make an informed decision is fine but don't go on, she's an adult and didn't need to tell you in the first place

Don’t be ridiculous. Why shouldn’t she tell her off? I’m guessing that the OP paid for that ‘adults’ room and it would be her liable for any fine/charges. Plus, if my child started vaping or smoking I would never be done telling her off no matter how uncool or unpopular that made me.

What does cruising say about a person?

That the fact they can afford to go on cruises gets up the nose of people who clearly can't? 😂

I know cruising isn't everyone's cup of tea which is fair enough - but ime the only people who go to lengths to put it down are those that are green eyed it's out of reach for them (whilst obviously insisting the opposite).

People with money just don't care what others with money spend it on.

Cruising can be as cheap as chips
Who wants to spend days on a floating petri dish?

The good ones are definitely not 'cheap as chips' 😂

The whole world is a petri dish. Any time you go to a crowded pub, busy restaurant, the theatre, a supermarket. Big ol' petri dish of various viruses circulating. Do you never go anywhere?

You can leave a pub. You cannot get off a ship until it docks.
I have done a short cruise, it was a gift. It was dreadful.

You obviously got a cheap and cheerful cruise, if you want a good cruise you need to pay top dollar and you'll get the experience x

To be honest, I have no idea! It was a big, fuck-off sized thing with about 30 decks (i may be exaggerating, but it seemed that way). Several restaurants that the waiters always tried to upsell, and as with all cruises, entertainment provided by those who didn't quite make the grade
