To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

Have you not seen the 2 posts from people who've had hotel fire alarms go off due to vaping? And I can vouch for the fact that steam from the shower can set the alarm off in some hotels, having been evacuated from a Travelodge at 3am due to someone showering with the bathroom door open. Some hotel alarms are indeed very sensitive to steam.

So best to vape in the bathroom with the door shut I guess

Many hotel smoke alarms are now set up to detect vape smoke. So she may set off the smoke alarm and in turn the fire alarms! I wouldn't want to be in her shoes if the entire hotel has to be evacuated, and the fire brigade called. The smoke detectors etc are set up in such a way, the hotel would be able to tell where the alarm originated! Not only is she being foolish but she's being selfish too. All you can do is tell her, if she ignores you advice, then let her get on with it. So far she's been lucky, but if in the future she does set off a smoke alarm/fire alarms, she will then need to deal with the consequences of her actions - after all that's part of being an adult!! Tell her not to call you, as you won't be interested!!

In that case if the hotels are investing to catch out vapers they should not have that attached to the fire alarm surely

No, best to vape in the smoking/vaping area, if you really have to indulge in such a stupid pastime.

  1. an Elfbar won’t set off the alarm
  2. It will not leave a lingering smell any more than someone farting or spraying perfume
  3. She is an adult and can do what she likes

Some people on this thread need to catch themselves on as it’s clear they have no idea what they’re talking about.

This is from a website which sells these vile, smelly things. It says they can set off alarms.

I have vaped for years and never set a fire alarm off anywhere, nor left a lingering smell.

Vapes stink.

Tink3rbell30 · 15/12/2024 12:59

How embarrassing that even adults think they can stay out in a hotel and ignore the rules also.

LoremIpsumCici · 15/12/2024 13:04

You can warn her not to vape in her room and tell her any extra cleaning fee she incurs she will pay for. I might even be tempted to shop her to the hotel management so they hit her with a room cleaning fee due to vaping so she learns her lesson in a cheap hotel for a short stay. Depends on whether she’d find out and if that would ruin your relationship with her.

Dontwanttobefatanymore · 15/12/2024 13:10

Problem is with smokers they want to smoke most if not all their cigarette at a time, vapers think because they only have 1 drag at a time they aren’t bothering others.
loads of vapers puff away indoors because they have one puff and put it away (till the next one) but with a cigarette they would go outside because they have more than 1 puff!

Also as you can see by this thread none of the vapers are bothered by the smell and they aren’t going to set off most smoke alarms so are not bothered if they offend anyone!

To all the selfish tossers on here who break the rules and vape wherever you feel like, I hope you get bedbugs. Or worse.

Glittertwins · 15/12/2024 14:51

We've been evacuated from a hotel in the middle of the night due to vaping or shower steam, I forget which. Anyway, the notices in the rooms state that bathroom doors should be shut due to sensitivity of the alarms. Luckily it was warm in summer.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/12/2024 14:56

She’s an idiot. But she’s an adult idiot, so I’d leave it.

Radiatorvalves · 15/12/2024 15:10

In my office people vaping in the toilets have caused the alarm to go off, the buildings have been evacuated and they went through the disciplinary process.

Its a disgusting habit and you’re right to tell her off/make her pay the fine.

user2848502016 · 15/12/2024 15:34

She could set off the alarms and get you both chucked out so yes she is being unreasonable. She should be going outside.

FlabbergastedByTheGorgons · 15/12/2024 15:47

She sounds like a total brat.

Bohemond23 · 15/12/2024 15:52

We were woken by the fire alarm going off at 3am due to someone vaping in their room in a hotel with 200+ rooms. We were really fucked off and I expect the other 198 families were too. Immature and selfish FFS.

It doesn't matter whether you think its ok or not, presumably you are not the mananger of OP's hotel.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/12/2024 17:48

I don't vape in hotel rooms, I'm a stickler that always goes outside because I don't want to be the person that evacuates a hotel. However I've stayed in plenty of hotels where the bathroom vent was so poor steam has been blown into the bedroom post drying and never has a fire alarm gone off.

Fancytrike · 15/12/2024 18:12

It’ll be fine OP, very rare for a disposable vape to give off enough vapour for an alarm to trigger.

I only read the rules so I can do the opposite.

We stayed in a Premier Inn once before a vvv early flight.
At 12:30am the entire hotel had to evacuate due to fire alarms being activated. This was caused by some idiot vaping in their room. 100s of people including small children were outside in their pyjamas and then we had to wait for the Fire Brigade to check the building before we went back in. Such a waste of their time too.

People are just becoming more and more selfish and entitled. Just because they cannot be arsed to step outside for a few mins to feed their ridiculous habit.

Really? I work for Premier Inn - the alarms in the rooms absolutely do not detect vape - even though we tell people they do.

Ponderingwindow · 15/12/2024 18:23

I’d be tempted to turn her in to hotel management so she gets hit with the fine. She needs to learn a harsh lesson about being inconsiderate and about the habit in general.

fairycakes1234 · 15/12/2024 18:24

I always vape in hotel rooms as does my husband and never ever has an alarm gone off, it's not smoke, no worst than using can of hairspray, and yes I know we're not meant to but we do, husband also vapes in local pub and barman turns blind eye, we're dreadful people!!
