I'm a celebrity

I've watched a bit of it over the years.

I was watching a couple of this year's episodes, and I just thought that the trials have gotten so much worse.

Yesterday they had Oti mabuse, one of the contestants, stand in a sarcophagus. They poured sand into it, up to her neck, so her whole body was covered in sand, and she couldn't move at all.

She had a tiny head space for air. Then they filled that head space with giant cockraches, ants and large worms.

I was watching it and thinking,

"When did watching people being completely tortured on TV become acceptable."

Is it not going too far?

So disappointed that you are not a celebrity!

Haha! That was a good one.

They all do well in tbe trials, have done for years and then come out saying the show was an amazing experience so I don’t think it qualifies as torture.

I think part of the reason it’s got harder is because it’s been going so long, people in it know what to expect and are more prepared mentally. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t go on it.

Well I think burying someone in sand so they can't move, and pouring giant cockroaches on their face, definitely fits the definition of torture.

She said it was horrible when she came out.

It's torture for entertainment.

It's the only UK show that does that really.

You should watch some of the Korean and Japanese ones oof

Flyhigher · 04/12/2024 22:24

I agree with you.
It's torture. It's abusive. And watching it condones it. It's extreme.

7ft1garysson · 04/12/2024 22:29

They can stop it whenever they want though. Don’t compare it to actual real torture

Starlightstarbright4 · 04/12/2024 22:29

They can say I am a celebrity - celebrities rarely leave and if you watch the ITV 2 show watch previous celebs who have done it have nothing but happy memories .

but hey don’t watch it if it’s not for you

So if I hold you down so you can't move , and pour cockroaches all over you, what would you call it?

But it's been going so long, everyone knows what they are signing up to! The trials are not a surprise and I'm sure the hefty fee they get makes it worth while!

Well the producers suck people in with large amounts of money.

But my point is that torture should never be used for entertainment purposes.

It's a slippery slope.

Am I a celebrity receiving a fee in your scenario? Am I able to shout I’m a celebrity get me out of here in your scenario?

TinySmol · 04/12/2024 22:37

Just shows you what people will do for money.

Tel12 · 04/12/2024 22:38

I stopped watching years ago when Uri Geller was about to eat a giant bug that had been speared, it was alive. I honestly thought that entertainment couldn't get lower.

FestiveFelines · 04/12/2024 22:38

They can get out at any time, all they need to do is say the words, it’s hardly torture with the amounts they’re paid to go on the show.

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 22:39

7ft1garysson · 04/12/2024 22:37

But how much free will do they have to shout "I'm a celebrity yet me out of here".

If they shout "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" it means that the other contestants won't get any food.

So they get guilt tripped into doing the trial

Yeah when they were eating the live bugs it was absolutely disgusting.

They don’t have to do it, or sign up to the show. After 20 years I think they all know what it’s all about.

Just turn it off if you don’t like seeing it.

"Just turn it off".

So are you saying that we should never write about things we don't like on mumsnet then?

People write about things that they dont like, on here all the time

It's always been like this though. I remember over 20 years ago me and then-dh shrieking horrified at the telly as Wayne Sleep got bit by hundreds of rats.

It's just because it's not on all year round that you notice it. It's like when you buy a newspaper after not reading one for ages. Everything seems extreme because you're not used to it.
