I'm a celebrity

I've watched a bit of it over the years.

I was watching a couple of this year's episodes, and I just thought that the trials have gotten so much worse.

Yesterday they had Oti mabuse, one of the contestants, stand in a sarcophagus. They poured sand into it, up to her neck, so her whole body was covered in sand, and she couldn't move at all.

She had a tiny head space for air. Then they filled that head space with giant cockraches, ants and large worms.

I was watching it and thinking,

"When did watching people being completely tortured on TV become acceptable."

Is it not going too far?

It’s discussed here for example @Blossomtoes. A number of Scottish posters say they use it regularly.

That link doesn't seem to open for me

Yes, sorry, link doesn’t seem to work. You can search it anyway.

Rainbowandgrey · 05/12/2024 17:10

I think it worked this time.

Mearabade · 05/12/2024 17:11

Yes it worked there .

I never even knew that some people thought that "gotten" was unusual.

It's used all the time, where I live!

Yes, me too.

Edited to add that I’m Irish though and not British, to be fair to pp.

'Nothing the humans have to endure is cruel"?

It's astounding how people adapt to see torture as normality.

Because it's on a tv show and the contestants are paid, they think it's OK.

If I put a child in a sarcophagus and poured sand up to her neck, so she can't move her legs or arms.

If I then pour giant burrowing cockroaches, and mealworms and ants all over her face.

And I make her scream.
She's screaming and I'm laughing at her.

Am I being cruel to that child?

Edited

The contestants are not children. They are fully consenting adults, with a good enough understanding of what will happen to them before they go into the situation. They have an immediate out if they start and do not like it...it is not torture and your comparison of this to torture is insulting to people who undergo torture.

You say its cruel as it "terrifies people" I went in a dungeon with scare actors...once in there I found it terrifying -are the owners of merlin cruel and torturous for having such an attraction? Or as an adult, should I take responsibility for the fact I knew what to expect and chose to go into the attraction?

Look, love, I’ve been on this planet for 71 years and lived in a variety of places in the UK - do you not think I might have heard it at least once if it was still in contemporary use?

But it is still in contemporary use.

Have you heard the words 'peedie' 'slester' or 'spaigie'?

They are also in contemporary use in the UK.

And TBF - you've seen it used on Mumsnet. Surely that's contemporary use in the UK too?

Pomegranatecarnage · 05/12/2024 18:45

I have never been able to watch it! It’s horrifying.

Whatalife88 · 05/12/2024 19:03

I bet you're fun at parties. Imagine comparing celebrities getting hundreds of thousands of pounds for doing a few tasks for 3 weeks to people in certain countries who are actually tortured, or Sara Sharif who was tortured by her own family. Most of the celebrities say they'd do it again so it can't be that bad. Bugs are a phobia, they're actually nothing to be scared of, it's not like they're being waterboarded or having knives pulled on them. You're being precious and I'd hate to live with someone as boring as you.

Roll on to tonight's episode.
