I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

So do you mean all-mond rather than al-mond?

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 16:44

I say it more like ah-mond so don't sound the 'l' at all.

eastcoasterly · 30/11/2024 16:44

YANBU but as with all these kinds of threads I hope you're prepared for everyone to jump on each other and forget about regional dialect differences. I'll get my popcorn ready 🍿 Grin

GridlockonMain · 30/11/2024 16:44

I don’t know how you would pronounce it without the L tbh!

ObtuseMoose · 30/11/2024 16:44

I pronounce it ah-mund. I don't know anyone who says al-mond.

Anotherworrier · 30/11/2024 16:44

Well no one says a-mond do they. But over pronouncing it is pretentious.

I beg to differ!

AutumnLeaves1990 · 30/11/2024 16:47

Ah-mond

Sparklyhat · 30/11/2024 16:48

Ah-mund here

Wherethewildthingsfart · 30/11/2024 16:49

How do you pronounce it without an L? Amond?

I say All mond
Dh says Al (like Alley) mond

BeTealUser · 30/11/2024 16:49

Ah-mund for me too. Similar to palm.

niadainud · 30/11/2024 16:52

No...

Astonished at the people who seem to have never come across the pronunciation which is different to their own.

Itiswhysofew · 30/11/2024 16:52

I think I pronounce is as almund

DP says allmond

I pronounce the “l”. I’m definitely not American but the Cambridge dictionary suggests the difference is between UK and USA pronunciations:

Also, as @eastcoasterly notes, there will be regional differences within the UK.

Eh??
(Agree with your first point! All-mond is US)
A-mund for me in Irl.

PedantScorner · 30/11/2024 16:55

I say it as Alm-und (alm as in alms or palm)

Namechangeobviously2024 · 30/11/2024 16:56

Ol-mund

Ol as in bollocks

NE England if that matters

RandomMess · 30/11/2024 16:57

Ahmund or Armund depending on where I've lived in England.

GoodVibesHere · 30/11/2024 16:57

Either is fine, people will know what you are referring to, whichever pronunciation you use, lol.

Nobody's going to be like 'what did you say? No sorry I don't know what an almond is'

Arrrrmond
ahmond

al mond just sounds all kinds of wrong. Yep, fully aware of the L in the spelling, but it just sounds wrong.

I'm perfectly chilled, thanks for your concern. 😀 Just rather surprised.
