I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

I actually thought of him!! I'm sure he says Ah-mund.

Yes he does. Even on the radio back in the day it was always Marc Ahmund.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 30/11/2024 18:44

Non native-speaker... I never realised I wasn't supposed to pronounce the "l" in almond... 🙈😆

BeTealUser · 30/11/2024 18:44

Saying the L in calm or balm is just wild to me!! The Scots have a habit of adding extra vowels so it would turn out like “cal-uh-m” or bal-uh-m” 😂 it just doesn’t work.

Yes. He was the first Almond I heard of, before people got fancy and actually started eating them 😆

You are supposed to, people are being weird.

LoafofSellotape · 30/11/2024 18:38

I say the L in calm

Really? I’m not sure I’d even know how to verbally incorporate the L in that word. Do you say Cal (as in California) m?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/11/2024 18:46

Not sure why people are so surprised by the 'ah-mond' pronunciation. How do you pronounce 'calm', 'alms' 'balm' 'palm' 'qualm' and 'psalm'?

Yes 'ahhthatfaahfel' is correct in my opinion

With the L!

I've never heard a Scot say Cal-uh-m unless they are talking to someone called Callum.

Fil-um on the other hand...

The funny thing is I say ahmund but my best friend growing up, who lived in the next street, says all mond. So we don’t even have geographical distance to cause the difference.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying.. nobody says it because it doesn’t work.

Gir-uhl is another one 🤣

But how do you say Salmond?

Ah-mund
Sammon
Alec Sammond

No we're not. Not pronouncing the L is the dominant pronounciation in British English, although, as can be seen here, some people do pronounce the L.

In America almond farmers say it without the L but most people say it with.

SofandaCox · 30/11/2024 18:48

With the L!

I can’t believe that. No one pronounces the L in Psalm, balm or palm.

NippyCrab · 30/11/2024 18:52

Both pronunciations are technically correct.

Oh, my DH is of Irish decent, although he doesn't have an Irish accent and he says fil-um. I want to rip his tongue out when he politely asks if I'd like to watch something on Netflix.

CheshireCats · 30/11/2024 18:54

I have never (in 50 years) heard it pronounced without the L. Have lived in Midlands/ various Northern towns and cities for almost (which is also pronounced with an L!) all of that time. I genuinely had no idea what some people didn't pronounce the L.
However, unlike some other folk, I don't made judgy comments on other people's pronunciations/regional differences. Because I recognise we all have different accents and dialects and they are all wonderful.

greglet · 30/11/2024 18:55

I grew yo saying OL mond but switched at some point to AHmond.
