I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

You're not taking into account rhotic and non-rhotic accents there.

Are you a pirate?

Hols23 · 30/11/2024 17:05

Ah-mund to rhyme with palm, alms, balm.

Perfectly familiar with alternative pronunciations though 😁

DazedAndConfused321 · 30/11/2024 17:06

I grew up with an Irish nanny, so it's Ah-mund to me. But I think either is ok

Trallers · 30/11/2024 17:06

I come across 4 regularly:
Ah-mond
Arl-mond
All-mond (as in the word all)
All-mond (as in the name Allan)

There is definitely no r sound in almond. It's ahmund.

spottedinthewilds · 30/11/2024 17:10

Al - mund

Ahh... someone who doesn't understand non rhotic accents. Bless.

mawbroon · 30/11/2024 17:14

Ammind

Is pronouncing the 'L' a Midlands thing?

I say aLmond. It never occured to me how very very wrong this is.
OK, I'll correct it from now on.
But moving forward you'll need to accept warnut, hazernut and pissed arsio nut from me too.

kazzieB · 30/11/2024 17:20

It's AL-mond.

Clue's in the spelling. Any other way of saying it is just nuts.

notacooldad · 30/11/2024 17:20

Al mund is the way we say it.
Well the only time we need to say Almond is when DH orders an Almond slice!

I say - arlmond

BobbyBiscuits · 30/11/2024 17:23

I pronounce it 'Arr-mund'. No L sounds at all.
I don't like it when I hear Al- mund. Or All-mund.
But think it's more common outside the UK to use the latter two.

Moier · 30/11/2024 17:24

No L.

I say ah mund and privately think people who say al mund sound stupid 😅

MrsSethGecko · 30/11/2024 17:29

Al-mond for me. Like the al in "you can call me Al."

wafflesmochi · 30/11/2024 17:33

Ah-mond here.

If anyone knows which way is the posh way (I don't) I strongly recommend joining in with this thread with a post saying it's the wrong way round to drive all the milk in second etiquette types bananas

DrZaraCarmichael · 30/11/2024 17:34

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 16:44

I say it more like ah-mond so don't sound the 'l' at all.

Scottish - me too. Ah-mund. DH is from England and says all-monde.
