I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

Eh? I've never heard it pronounced without the L.

Ollmund. NW

NW here.
Didn't know it was anything other than Al-mond or all-mund 🤣🤦‍♀️

I’ve just gone on google (almond pronunciation) and it’s come up as ahmund. I feel vindicated after the gify laugh response I got 😁

I say both types. Shed is British and Sked is American. Which is very inconsistent seeing as school is skool.

ShootyBumPain · 30/11/2024 18:27

@allthecoffee100 Same! This is eye opening! 😂

Have you just discovered them, you seem to be planting them all over the thread 😁

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 18:04

I don't sound the L in palm or calm either. Do you @SuperfluousHen ?

No - palm = pamm. Calm = camm.

Brought up in Edinburgh, now live in the west of Scotland.

SuperfluousHen · 30/11/2024 18:31

SofandaCox · 30/11/2024 18:10

I definitely say the L in some of those!

Me too 🤷🏼‍♀️

BunnyLake · 30/11/2024 18:31

Thing is there’s lots of words that have different pronunciations and not just because of geography. Neether, nyther, eether, eyther, scon, scone. I think most countries probably have this. They’re all correct.

HereForTheAnimals · 30/11/2024 18:33

I was thinking where is the 'i' in Almond when I first read the post, sorry.

I've never heard anyone pronounce it without the 'l'. I'm from Yorkshire if that helps.

just treating this thread with the solemnity it deserves

BunnyLake · 30/11/2024 18:33

What about salmon? Does everyone say samun? I’ve never heard the L in that.

I’ve never seen Steve Carroll look so solemn.

There are estimated to be 56 different accents in the UK yet minds boggle on theses threads every single time in utter astonishment that people pronounce words differently.

Surely there are more than that. I'm Scottish but live in the NE of England and it's very easy for to tell the difference between Geordies, Mackems and Smoggies. And that's just 1 county.

Anyway as a Scot I say almond to rhyme with (Alex) Salmond.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 30/11/2024 18:35

Ol-mnd here, North West

How does Marc Almond say it? I reckon he gets the final say. Find out how he pronounces it and close this thread forever. Thanks.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/11/2024 18:41

BunnyLake · 30/11/2024 18:35

But how do you say Salmond?

Almond
Salmon
Salmond

No L. But there's been enough Scots on here saying we don't pronounce the L. There must be a pronounciation map somewhere because this is a pretty common one.

Edited for typos

TaxDirector · 30/11/2024 18:41

Its like

Palm
Psalm
Calm
Balmy
Salmon

I actually thought of him!! I'm sure he says Ah-mund.

I also pronounce the 'L' in his name 😯

TaxDirector · 30/11/2024 18:44

I suspect the pronunciation with the "l" sounding stems from for eg spanish "almendra". Especially in the US where spanish has influenced english more.
