I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

Al-mund. As in alley. Despite having traveled a lot in the UK I had no idea people didn’t pronounce the L. Edited to say that I am Welsh.

wafflesmochi · 02/12/2024 16:16

Just looked into this a bit. I think the traditional British way was Ah-mond (no l). Dictionaries from the 1950s only list Ah-mond as pronunciation. But Americans more often pronounce L, it became more popular, and now dictionaries say both ways are correct.

So Ah-mond is a bit more old school, Al-mond the American/new kid on the block way. Neither are wrong. I suspect Susie Dent would say Ah-mond!

PedantScorner · 02/12/2024 16:55

I say salmon as sammun.

'ah' is like the a in cat. The al in almond is like the al in calmer or the (non-rhotic) ar in car.

I think the totally absent ‘L’ (so ah-mund rather than ahl-mund with a touch of L) is a London/southern thing. And Londoners do tend to think their way is the default so…

Well, except for all the Scots saying we say a-mond.

YarkYark · 02/12/2024 17:17

Never heard it pronounced anything but al-mund when I was brought up in the 60's in Dorset, neither consciously heard it any differently here in the SE since.

It's AL-mond.

Clue's in the spelling. Any other way of saying it is just nuts.

"Clue's in the spelling" is a ridiculous comment when talking about the pronunciation of English 😆 So do you pronounce the l in salmon, walk and would?

Fizbosshoes · 02/12/2024 17:29

I say Ar-mund.
DD (18) says All-mond
DH would just make up a pronunciation just to disagree with me! 🤣

This is a fair comment. However, I do think that spellings often tell us something about how the word was once pronounced. Pronunciation is not an absolute science, and there are very different shades of pronunciation which would be rendered exactly the same in the phonetic spelling codes. I think, for example, the word ‘talk’ originally did have a sounded ‘L’ in it that has faded over time. And it was not intended to be the exact same pronunciation as ‘torque’. But if you look them up now, I believe the same pronunciation is given.

I say this as someone with a surname that has one of these ‘silent’ Ls (won’t say what it is as outing, obviously). I can sometimes tell when people say my surname whether they’re likely to spell it correctly; if there’s not even the breath of an ‘L’ in there, I suspect they’ve misinterpreted the word.

I say aLmond. It never occured to me how very very wrong this is.
OK, I'll correct it from now on.
But moving forward you'll need to accept warnut, hazernut and pissed arsio nut from me too.

😂😆Brilliant!

do you say SALmon too??!

I've always pronounced it with the 'l' and have never heard anyone say it differently!
The 'l' is the second letter so should be used when you say 'almond', to pronounce it without the l seems lazy as it's the correct English pronunciation.
Whereas with 'salmon' the 'l' is the third letter so it's virtually impossible to pronounce it with the 'l' when pronounced correctly.
Ah mond is just wrong IMO....

aliceinawonderland · 03/12/2024 08:59

I've never heard it pronounced without the L
The only difference is that some people pronounce the first syllable like Alex/Alone and others have a slightly elongated version like in Always/Alter

If you were to pronounce the "l" in salmon it would be just as easy as in almond because it's the exact same sound.

I say ahh-mund (NE England)

Jillybloop393 · 03/12/2024 09:21

It's 'ah-mond' from me, Bedfordshire, if that makes a difference.

devongirl12 · 30/11/2024 20:02

I've always pronounced the L.

Wasn't even aware of the ahmund pronunciation until a few years ago and it actually caught me off guard a bit.

Always thought it sounded weird, non-sensical and a bit pretentious.

A poster above put a screenshot of silent L words (calm etc) and it still didn't change my mind.

The only one that gave me pause was salmon.

I do not pronounce the L in salmon, so I can now kind of see where the silent L in almond is coming from.

But I'm not sure I can change my pronounciation, nor do I think I want to.

I am surprised though that so many people seem to have got the memo that the L is silent.

I had no idea until a few years ago.

I suppose it's just what you grew up with, I didn't realise people pronounced the L til I was an adult.

catmum44 · 03/12/2024 18:38

I say all-mond. But according to the Oxford dictionary that's incorrect.

KAT0779 · 10/12/2024 16:45

I've always pronounced it without the L so like "armond" but I think I hear more people pronouncing it with the L than without it.
