I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

@SoupDragon and the people who say it has an R don't understand rhotic accents. Bless. 🙄

Al-mond until I was told ar-mond is the posh way.

😂 bet you a chocolate orange that this now means a line of mumsnetters falling over themselves to state that they have always said Ar mond after reading that. in their Volvos wearing corduroy elbow pads and smelling of wet dogs

Screamingabdabz · 30/11/2024 17:37

I never got that memo. Why does it have a stupid-arse L in the middle of it then making us all look stupid? Or should that be ‘making us ‘au’ look stupid?’.

Are we French? No. Are we Lady Chatterley’s lover. No.

The L is pronounced and that’s it! 😠

TrippTover · 30/11/2024 17:39

I say almond. Like it’s written - al-mund.
I also say lilac like lie-lac which is apparently wrong too.

Personally I think ‘ahhhhmond’ and ‘lie-luk’ sound so pompous 😂

Cucumberpickles · 30/11/2024 17:40

I used to drive my mother mad doing this as a child. She would tell me off and I’d cry that it was ‘L’ so I said all-mond. I also used to have huge meltdowns around writing stories as she told me they have to begin ‘once upon a time’ and I said ‘but you can’t be upon the time? Do you mean on top of a clock?’ And I’d then write each story with a beginning such as ‘once upon a hillside’ or ‘once upon a mountain’ and ‘once upon a sand dune’ 😂😂

Davros · 30/11/2024 17:46

Marcus Wareing says "all-mond" with a big L.
I'm from Lahndan and I say Ah-mond, cor blimey etc

Alpolonia · 30/11/2024 17:48

Ahl mond

SuperfluousHen · 30/11/2024 17:49

How does anybody say ahhmond?

it makes no sense 🤷🏼‍♀️

Livinginaclock · 30/11/2024 17:50

I say Ah-mond, from the North East, but lived in Scotland for 28 years.

HardenYourHeart · 30/11/2024 17:50

I didn't vote as I don't think there are any "shoulds" about this issue, but I generally pronounce the 'l'.

Fine, thanks. But you can't compare the pronunciation of a type of nut with medical names for body parts like knee, oesophagus and haemorrhoid. That's a different thread altogether.

Still AL-mond.

GoldenLegend · 30/11/2024 17:54

I remember Chris Tarrant pronouncing it as all-mond on Millionaire and I thought I'd never heard anything so weird in my life. It's like people who say pollis for police, thee-atr for theatre and sing-ging for singing.

The letter K is often silent in English.
Not so the letter L

Here I stand. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I say both these things like your second example and I am certainly not pompous. I am Scottish though.

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 18:04

I don't sound the L in palm or calm either. Do you @SuperfluousHen ?

It’s definitely a regional thing, I never heard anyone pronounce the L in almond until I moved to England (from Scotland).

yes, its definitely there.
Not emphatically but it’s still there.

SofandaCox · 30/11/2024 18:07

I have never heard it said without the L before.

Ah-mund here

Me too

(Scottish)

dementedpixie · 30/11/2024 18:09

This says the L is silent so it's settled 😆

Almond
5128gap · 30/11/2024 18:10

I pronounce it Al (as in you can call me) mond to rhyme with blonde. I have heard people say Ull mund though. But only the people who pronounce room as rum.

I definitely say the L in some of those!

LoafofSellotape · 30/11/2024 18:10
