I know some people pronounce the 'l' in Almond, but I don't think it can be many. I've never heard it except from my husband and it drives me nuts (!)

So how many do?

YABU: One should pronounce the 'l' in Almond.

YANBU: Of course you bloody don't!

I say it more like ah-mond so don't sound the 'l' at all.

Me too. I'm Scottish too.

OPsSockpuppet · 01/12/2024 19:55

sabbii · 01/12/2024 19:48

Correct pronunciation is ar-monds.
Exactly like salmon, silent L. Basic literacy

If it was ‘exactly like salmon’ it would be ‘a’ (short a) mond.

I don’t think rhotic speakers will agree with your attempt at a phonetic rendering there either!

JayJayj · 01/12/2024 19:56

I honestly didn’t know you didn’t pronounce the L!! Which means everyone around me also says it wrong which is kind of crazy to think about.

I just googled it as I really didn’t believe that you wouldn’t pronounce the L!

Thank you for my “new thing I learned today”

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 01/12/2024 21:00

I guess your DH is pronouncing like You Can Call Me Al-mond, which is weird.

I sort of lilt it, so it comes out like Ah-mond, or sometimes more of an Ahl-mond.

Without the 'l' obviously you would have a different pronunciation but I agree, it's not a heavily voiced 'l'.

As an aside, I hope no-one on this thread will start banging on about rhotic bloody accents.

swiftyscakes · 01/12/2024 21:51

I pronounce it al-mond but the "al" sounds like the start of olive.
I know a fair few people who pronounce it al-mond but with the "al" like in alligator.
I don't know anyone who doesn't pronounce the L, tbh!

Lyraloo · 01/12/2024 23:05

ObtuseMoose · 30/11/2024 16:44

I pronounce it ah-mund. I don't know anyone who says al-mond.

I do!

CrazyAndSagittarius · 01/12/2024 23:50

I say. Ahl-mond. The L sound is very short though so it could sound like I am saying ah-mond. The l is definitely there though. However online it says it's supposed to be completely silent! All-mond or Al-mond is blatantly wrong though surely. Unless it's a dialect thing.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 01/12/2024 23:52

kazzieB · 30/11/2024 17:20

It's AL-mond.

Clue's in the spelling. Any other way of saying it is just nuts.

Things in English are very often pronounced different to the way they are spelt. Don't take that as your clue! 😂

DancingOctopus · 01/12/2024 23:52

I pronounce the L. My mother did.
I am not sure if it's a regional thing or just a my Mum thing.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 01/12/2024 23:54

TrippTover · 30/11/2024 17:39

I say almond. Like it’s written - al-mund.
I also say lilac like lie-lac which is apparently wrong too.

Personally I think ‘ahhhhmond’ and ‘lie-luk’ sound so pompous 😂

Lie-luk isn't pompous. That"s just how it's pronounced lol! And I was dragged up on a council estate! Definitely no pompous pronunciations here!!

another1bitestheduck · 01/12/2024 23:55

ObtuseMoose · 30/11/2024 16:44

vice versa!

There's no R in almond.

Well, if people keep insisting on spelling words with extra r’s it’s more or less inevitable isn’t it? 😉
Yes, I know it’s meant to indicate a longer vowel sound. The problem is that for so many people on here an r simply indicates an r sound.

DearZebra · 02/12/2024 01:01

I’m am so bemused right now!
i have always pronounced it OLMUND and never tuned in to anyone pronounce it any differently 🤯

Floatlikeafeather2 · 02/12/2024 01:15

BobbyBiscuits · 30/11/2024 17:23

I pronounce it 'Arr-mund'. No L sounds at all.
I don't like it when I hear Al- mund. Or All-mund.
But think it's more common outside the UK to use the latter two.

I've lived in a few different areas of the UK and have friends from all over the country (and I'm very old by MN standards) and I know nobody who doesn't pronounce the L so there's a lot of us about. Ahmond sounds slightly ridiculous to my ears and sadly I'm going to start hearing it all over the place now.

tobee · 02/12/2024 03:06

I pronounce it Ah mond
Whereas dh says All mond.

It sounds all wrong when he says it and yet we grew up in the same town 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dh also says Bate-hoe-venn
Whereas I say Bate-oh-venn

I find his way of pronouncing that weird too. Although he probably says it the German way. So maybe correct.

I think the totally absent ‘L’ (so ah-mund rather than ahl-mund with a touch of L) is a London/southern thing. And Londoners do tend to think their way is the default so…

greengirlgang · 02/12/2024 11:45

I’m part of a sewing group called Almond Studio and I say Al-mond - everyone I’ve spoken to there seems to pronounce the L (they were London based so the dialect might make a difference) - unless I’ve just heard the L everytime without processing different peoples pronunciation.

My family say Almond.

We buy Almond milk, use Almond oil and had always heard the L in my interactions.

Of course you pronounce the 'l', that's why it's in the word!!

Would you like a list of all the other English words that 'rule' doesn't apply to?

Bordhuh · 02/12/2024 12:47

I grew up saying “olmund” but now say ahmund

DecayingRelic · 02/12/2024 12:49

I say Olmund but that's my Lancashire accent

Wingedharpy · 02/12/2024 12:54

Fellow Lancashire lass @DecayingRelic .
Olmund here too.
Celebrate the differences I say.

xILikeJamx · 02/12/2024 13:00

I say ahmund. However I'd pronounce the singer as Marc 'Al'mond.

Which gives me the perfect opportunity to post my favourite Twitter interaction ever...

Well this has been interesting. I'm Yorkshire born and never heard the L pronounced till dh. It's always going to annoy me. But what can you do?
I suppose I could nag the L out of him.
