I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

The microwave just melts the cheese, it doesn't get the toasty, crispy bits that grilling does. And you put 2 bits of toast in the toaster, then under the grill and sandwich them together to eat. Ergo, it is a toasted cheese sandwich, aka a toastie.

If I wanted toasted crispy burnt bits I'd make cheese on toast. I like cheese on toast, but sometimes I like a cheese and tomato or cheese and onion or tuna melt toastie, for which melted cheese without burnt bits is required. It doesn't need to look pretty as it's a filling, not a topping.

Another of doing it is to mix the cheese with an egg and English mustard. Toast with sliced tomatoes on. Was on the menu at a cafe I worked at absolutely gorgeous.

Isn't that Welsh rarebit?

Would making a lovely sandwich though

Have you tried Hellmanns Lighter than Light mayo?

It's just 15 calories per tablespoon rather than a whopping 102 in their normal mayo!

There's not a huge difference in taste!

No thanks. It tastes like glue.

Light mayo tastes ok but not extra light, ugh.

I can assure you this is far from lighthearted. This is serious fucking business.

🤣

knitnerd90 · 24/10/2024 09:36

Microwave? That would be sad and soggy. the microwave will do nothing kind to the bread. You can argue about a frying pan versus a toastie maker or a panini press, but never the microwave.

The microwave was for the cheese only so you make, I'm guessing a melted cheese spread type thing

I have never ever forgotten to have lunch. That may explain why I am always dieting 😁

now I've seen that I want to make another one. It was delish.

Nicklebox · 24/10/2024 12:12

I always make a cheese sandwich (sliced cheese not grated) put in microwave on high for about a minute and then under grill. Makes a lovely toastie. I will try adding some mayo next time😁

Is a fun sponge defined as someone who sees a thread title about something important and expects to read something important?

This is a moot point as the information in this case is unbelievably important.

I think you mean a moo point! It's like a cows opinion it doesn't matter...

Cheddarcheeseandsodabread · 24/10/2024 15:19

I'm always a little confused about the 'American' way. Don't you just end up with cheese between fried bread?

I do love cheese mixed with mayo though!

YABU to call a fried cheese sandwich a toastie. I love a toasted sandwich but fried cheese sandwiches make me gag. They taste completely different.

Although cows make milk which makes cheese so cow’s are important. I think cows would think cheese toasties are important. Joey would definitely think cheese toasties are important.

YABU to not put a fuller title to your post or add light-hearted. Click on posts thinking they may be important is a bit irritating.

Are you always like this? I know the original pay was days ago but it bears repeating!

I think cows would rather keep their milk rather than have us fiddle with their boobies but vegan cheese sucks

FlappingMadly · 27/10/2024 08:48

Hard no. And I’m Scottish ish too, hen. Cease and desist.
For a toastie you cover lightly toasted bread with cheese and grill.
For a croque, you butter the outside of bread and fill with cheese, ham and if you’re fancy. which I am, add onion and fry gently. You could dip in mayo I suppose if you’re a heathen.

A couple of ways to make toasted cheese sarnies:

Something I learned in lockdown, butter two pieces of bread on both sides, stick a slice of cheese between them (add sliced tomatoes for a healthier option) and put them in the toaster. You will need a toaster bag so that the cheese doesn't drip all over your toaster.

Cheese Dreams was something my Mum used to make when I was a child. Make a cheese sandwich and fry it in a frying pan until golden and the cheese melts. I like them with HP brown sauce.
