I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

@mmmmbloodygorgeous No, no, no. what you need to do is spread the mayo on the outsides of the toasty before you fry it in the butter. Believe me, you will worship me as a goddess when you try this.

JayJayEl · 22/10/2024 15:10

No, no, no. You put mayo (full fat) on the outside of the bread, too. Instead of butter. It doesn't burn like butter sometimes can. I promise you, it's a game changer. You're welcome. :)

Hahaha. Not only did we cross post with the same information, we also had the same "feel" in our replies, telling people how bloody awesome we are. I like you, internet stranger. 👍

But OP, your arteries! You will end up needing a coronary by-pass or something.

Won't anyone think of the DNHS?

Not only that, this thread didn't even contain information about sepsis.

Some people are too free and easy when it comes to their health

You are welcome, there is always room for more people to be worshipped as culinary deities. You, me, Nigella, Monica, we’re a team.

YABU to not put a fuller title to your post or add light-hearted. Click on posts thinking they may be important is a bit irritating.

This^
By the way I usually do my toast normal way: toast it in toaster, spread butter on it and put cheese on top.

If I want toast with cheese I don’t need mayonnaise.

oakleaffy · 22/10/2024 15:04

Seriously annoying especially if one has limited battery.
Thought this was a crucial info post about health.
YABU.

All these people with their limited phone batteries, trawling MN for crucial health info, and deciding that a thread that doesn't mention anything whatsoever about health in the title MUST be the answer they've been looking for.

It's funny that nobody is annoyed that it didn't contain info about how to check you've paid enough NI to get your state pension, or knowing where your stopcock is, or how to clean out the lint from your tumble dryer so it doesn't catch fire. Just the lack of health info that's annoying.

Minimili · 22/10/2024 15:21

I put a thin layer of mayo on the outside and use frylight in a pan which makes it crispy and less greasy.

To all the mayo haters: you honestly can’t taste the mayo, DP thinks it’s the work of the devil but doesn’t mind it in a toastie as he can’t taste it.

This is a bit controversial but I mix grated cheese (extra mature) with salad cream and pickled onions or branston. Another good combo is cheese, ham, salad cream and pineapple, it sounds gank but is surprisingly tasty and the perfect comfort food!

I read about them putting cheese and sour cream on a jacket potato in the US, it was an absolute game changer.

I feel this thread has plenty of important information and think the sense of urgency was completely justified!

Cockawoes · 22/10/2024 15:22

Reading all these replies has been the most well spent 10 minutes of my day.
And now I want a cheese toastie 😋

magicstar1 · 22/10/2024 15:23

The best way is to spread mayonnaise on the outside of the bread. It can be fried in butter, but a few minutes in the air fryer is even better. The outside is brown and crispy and the inside melts perfectly.

TheRutshireWI · 22/10/2024 15:27

Cheese is disgusting and should be banned. 🤮

I did not think of the air fryer! I feel it is imperative I put this information to use promptly… 🤤

Since when do toasties involve butter or a frying pan? Thought the bread was just toasted in a toaster or under a grill and then cheese melted under the grill.

GivingUpFinally · 22/10/2024 15:59

Canadian here. Basically, an American. More or less if you dont take geography to seriously. Yep, you read that correctly.

Firstly, for a grilled cheese sandwich- you butter the bread and put that pan side down , add cheese - must be yellow plastic cheese x 2. Highly recommend Kraft. Butter second slice of bread and put it on top of the cheese Butter side up. Then flip. It should only ever be flipped once and not disturbed until golden perfection is reached. Approx 2-3 mins per side. If you're feeling extra fancy you can use mayo instead of butter.

Eat, but beware it's hot! Feel free to dunk into either mayo, ketchup or tomato soup.

This is definitely not a fried sandwich but grilled as it should be done in a griddle pan or on a griddle.

Would that not just be cheese on toast?

@mmmmbloodygorgeous spread a thin layer of mayo on the outside of the sandwich and Worcestershire sauce and black pepper in the cheese. You're welcome.

I agree re the mayo on the outside instead of butter. You need to keep a closer eye on it, but when done well it's perfection👩‍🍳💋

The next time I do a cheese toastie I shall try mayo in with it so thank you for mentioning it @mmmmbloodygorgeous (even though I did think it was going to be some sort of health or financial info from your title 😉)

Am laughing more than I should at posters desperately clicking for important health info only for their phones to do this 30 seconds after they’ve read about toasties 🤣

Could it be some new rule we are unaware of? Do all threads now need to mention sepsis as part of some new health awareness programme we need to know about? To be fair, sepsis does tend to be mentioned as a possibility in almost every single thread even peripherally related to health already. Is Mumsnet aiming to be the No1 UK sepsis resource?

Anyway, I'll take your Worcester sauce and raise you the mustard of your choice. It brings out the flavour of the cheese.

I KNOW. I have sepsis right now but I'm mixing mayo and cheese instead of calling 111

Your comment has tickled me more than it probably should have 🤣 I do hope the ambulance driver lets you eat that toastie en route to casualty
