I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

I'm with @Lytlethings
I was expecting a thread with information about signs of sepsis, or how to self check your breasts.
You know, actual vital information.

Well I consider this toastie news to be vital!

If by "cheese toasty" you mean a grilled cheese sandwich we absolutely do butter the bread in America.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 24/10/2024 03:10

I absolutely consider this to be vital. Always on the look out for a good toasted sarnie recipe. Always find bread slices are too big to fit in a sandwich maker so in a pan is great. Air fryer is just genius.

Waffle78 · 24/10/2024 03:13

Amber in America posted a tiktok doing one. Be nice with spring onion in as well.

Waffle78 · 24/10/2024 03:19

Another of doing it is to mix the cheese with an egg and English mustard. Toast with sliced tomatoes on. Was on the menu at a cafe I worked at absolutely gorgeous.

Honestly, spreading the butter on the bread works better and many Americans do it that way! It browns too fast if you chuck it in the pan and the second side doesn't get buttered properly.

Mayo comes out crispier but no flavour.

knitnerd90 · 24/10/2024 03:34

Also, for real controversy, while many Americans will make fancy toasties with proper cheese and nice bread, if you break through their walls 90% will admit that sometimes the only thing that will do is Kraft singles with store white bread, squashed flat with the turner (maximum thickness approximately 1/2") and served with Heinz ketchup for dipping. Campbells tomato soup also acceptable.

FuckMiniBabybells · 24/10/2024 03:55

Anyone using a microwave to make a cheese toastie should hang their head in shame.

I love a proper grilled cheese. Mix of mature cheddar for the sharpness, medium for the melty-ness, and smoked for the tangy-ness. Mixed with aioli - cause I'm too posh for mayo.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/10/2024 04:00

Nah the correct way to make a cheese toastie is in the airfryer! I’m willing to give mayo a go though in the interests of research…

MrsCatE · 24/10/2024 04:19

You are daft - the perfect toastie is a Welsh Rarebit. However, the absolute slut of the toastie world involves a béchamel but including tons of cheese - preferably big
Gruyère (I know that's not technically a Bechamel) and English mustard. Toast two slices of bread, only on one side. Slather toasted sides with said Bechamel - perhaps with addition of chilli / sriracha / Linghams - squidge into sandwich. Meanwhile, heat up frying pan and grate tons of cheddar. Lather the pan with copious amounts of butter, stick sandwich down whilst simultaneously covering non pan facing side with the cheddar. Then flip, to your liking / required preference of burnt cheddar smell. Absolute filth. Probably why I do about once a year if having some 'private' time - also can't be arsed with clean up etc involving anyone else!

I KNOW. I have sepsis right now but I'm mixing mayo and cheese instead of calling 111

Me too. Worth it though.

You are wrong.
American's don't know what they are doing about many things.
They do know what they are doing when it comes to cheese toasties and having mixer taps.

wellicantseethem · 24/10/2024 04:51

Have you tried Hellmanns Lighter than Light mayo?

It's just 15 calories per tablespoon rather than a whopping 102 in their normal mayo!

There's not a huge difference in taste!

mmmmbloodygorgeous · 24/10/2024 05:19

@rainfallpurevividcat

You keep making these bland statements but not offering any explanations and seem to be having some kind of petit bourgeois hissy fit about anyone using a microwave.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

sashh · 24/10/2024 05:35

Some people 'butter' the bread with mayo.

In Australia they are 'jaffles' and I want this to become the universal word for 'toasties'.

AmeliaEarache · 24/10/2024 05:51

I can’t believe we’ve got this far and no one has mentioned using an iron yet!

In my bedsit days where the shared kitchen was down 2 flights of stairs, I would assemble the sandwich (butter or mayo on the outside, copious amounts of cheese inside) and double wrap it in tinfoil.

Then press down firmly on the foil packet with a hot iron - tea towel on the ironing board in case of any tears in the foil. Turn over, “iron” the other side.

There you go. Grilled cheese sandwich without having a kitchen.

Canadian here and this is how we do it. 😉
You can. Also add in a slice of ham to make it "fancy".😉

I love how many people on mumnet think they are better than Americans.

The UK isn't exactly a beacon of good health.

Yes, and people from mainland Europe mock us for it. It goes
Mainland Europe >mocks food culture of> UK >mocks food culture of> US> mocks> Canadians > are too polite to mock anyone so seethe quietly.

I don't think Canadians know we're being mocked! Lol

What are they saying about us?

What difference does the grill make v a microwave? The end result is melted cheese between two slices of toast, but far more faff and cost to use the grill. Sounds like you are confusing a toastie with cheese on toast, which is always grilled.

Edited

The microwave just melts the cheese, it doesn't get the toasty, crispy bits that grilling does. And you put 2 bits of toast in the toaster, then under the grill and sandwich them together to eat. Ergo, it is a toasted cheese sandwich, aka a toastie.
