I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

If we're talking about an American-derived grilled cheese it is not put under the 'grill' per se. In Americal heating from above, like our grills, is broiling. The term grilling is often used for heating from beneath - like in barbequeing or indeed, perhaps, in a frying pan.

I'm prepared to stand correcting but this has been the case in the parts of the US I've visited.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/10/2024 14:17

Bloody hell. I forgot to have lunch again.
and now I want one of those cheese whatdoyacallems.

BeMintBee · 22/10/2024 14:14

I think Americans refer to what we consider the grill as a broiler. Grilling in america not the same as grilling in the UK.

Oh dear, cross posted. But it is a point that is doubly worth making,

ForPearlViper · 22/10/2024 14:21

To be fair if you've got sepsis, a bit of extra saturated fat is the least of your worries so go ahead with the frying while waiting for DAmbulance.

Jessie1259 · 22/10/2024 14:23

I had no idea people made cheese toasties outside of a toastie maker. Obviously led a very sheltered life.

Melted cheese? In a microwave? Do you melt it on bread? Or in a bowl? Does it get warm enough and properly melt or just turn slightly droopy?

I melt it in a bowl or on a plate, it gets pleasantly melted and you can scrape it up and put it on the toast quite easily. As long as it's a cheese that melts well anyway. Cathedral City cheddar works well.

Indeed. And people thought this thread didn’t contain important info. Tsk

But OP, your arteries! You will end up needing a coronary by-pass or something.

Won't anyone think of the DNHS?

YABU to not put a fuller title to your post or add light-hearted. Click on posts thinking they may be important is a bit irritating.

Seems a lot more useful than most things posted on here!

Yep was about to say the same!

What we call grilling in the UK is called broiling in the US, and their version of grilling is what we say for things like frying and bbq'ing.

Myself and dd are addicted to grilled cheese sandwiches, so I've watched a lot of YouTube videos and read so many online recipes for the perfect grilled cheese, on a mission to recreate what we had from the US!

It's never quite matched up but still one of our favourite weekend treats (wish it wasn't so calorific!)

redalex261 · 22/10/2024 14:38

Very important post! Can I recommend a tiny spot of worcestershire sauce in the mayonnaise before the mixing? tried at lunchtime - very delicious (to me!).

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2024 14:43

That's lunch sorted anyway !

ShaneFulorgy · 22/10/2024 14:43

Butter your bread

Mix mayo, grated cheese (the stronger the better) and a splash of worcester sauce

Spread cheese mix over unbuttered side of bread, plonk other slice of bread on top (butter side out).

Bang into a frying pan and fry each side until delicious shade of golden brown and cheese is melty.

Leave note for DCoroner explaining your choices.

Eat.

purplecorkheart · 22/10/2024 14:47

I know someone who makes grilled cheese instead of buttering the outside of bread them spread it with a thin layer of mayo. They made me one one day and it was really nice and not greasy and I am a mayo hater.

BaronessBomburst · 22/10/2024 14:48

I use alioli. Best tuna melt ever.

niadainud · 22/10/2024 14:51

Goodness knows how you didn't know that - it's pretty bloody obvious! Can I humbly suggest adding tuna?

AuldSpookySewers · 22/10/2024 14:51

T’ch, Rank Amateur!

You need a George Foreman for starters, to toast it evenly on both sides.

Add in some ready made grated cheese consisting of cheddar and mozzarella (Lidl or Aldi), chopped spring onion or a red onion and some Balymaloe relish plus mayo, then wrap it in baking parchment and toast it.

Purrrfection. 😋😋

I might try that later. I've been unwell for days and that's the first thing that sounds appetising

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 22/10/2024 15:03

Mayo should never be warm.

Thought this was a crucial info post about health.

CheerfulBunny · 22/10/2024 15:06

@BaronessBomburst I like the cut of your jib! Most things can be improved with the introduction of alioli. P'raps not triffle.
I approve of this thread.

widelegenes · 22/10/2024 15:07

Fried mayonnaise?!

And what's all this frying pan nonsense, does no one use a Breville any more?

SoupDragon · 22/10/2024 15:08

Mayo is the devil's jizz. It has no place other than in the bin.
