I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

I'm with you mayo being the devil's jizz. I really struggle with pre packed sandwiches, can't even eat the duck ones as I despise cucumber even more than mayo. But boots do a lovely bbq chicken wrap with no mayo (or cucumber) in.

I don't mind a bit of good quality mayo. The stuff they pour into supermarket sandwiches is cheap and copious. I avoid.

Really finely chop some red onion and add that in too.

It was a brief exchange based on the other poster's failure to read my post properly. Then they tried to argue against the fact I had been agreeing with them. You can't win with some people. But it was six hours ago, no need to resurrect it.

I remember that in the 80s when cheese toastie makers were all the rage, it was essential to butter both sides of the bread with mayo before toasting for extra crispiness and to stop everything sticking to the toastie maker. I guess since non stick improved, it became unnecessary but I still think it adds a dimension to a toastie.

In the US we have a Walmart whipped cream cheese spread. I use it on the inside and the outside when making a grilled cheese sandwich. I also grate a different mix of cheeses together. My faves are Havarti, sharp white cheddar, and Colby Jack.

Haven't RTFT but if you want proper melted cheese, don't buy it already grated as it's coated in starch to stop it sticking together in the packet...hence it doesn't melt properly.

I grate my cheese, a nice strong cheddar, add a dollop of mayonnaise to make it all stick together, add finely sliced onion, a splash of Worcestershire sauce and a little English mustard for an extra kick.

If you spread the outside with mayonnaise and airfry, it's delicious.

A few people have mentioned mustard. I'll have to try this.
