I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

Grate cheese and add milk to make bubbly cheese.

YABU to not put a fuller title to your post or add light-hearted. Click on posts thinking they may be important is a bit irritating.

Oh my god what a misery

Yeah, you aren't toasting it! I love fried bread but I don't call it toast!

I make scrambled eggs and make omelettes in a frying pan but I don’t call them fried egg.

Anyway however one makes their hot cheese sandwich it’s all good (unless it involves a microwave then that person does not deserve cheese in their life)

twinmum2007 · 23/10/2024 22:32

rainfallpurevividcat · 22/10/2024 13:52

I just toast the bread in the toaster and melt the cheese in the microwave.

Toast bread in the toaster (clue's in the name), then melt cheese under the grill.

I'd like a thread on inventive ways to make hot cheese sandwiches.

Toast it between your GHDs
Rub it briskly on sandpaper to make heat from the friction
Warm it 'tween your buttock cheeks

I'm with @Lytlethings
I was expecting a thread with information about signs of sepsis, or how to self check your breasts.
You know, actual vital information.

But by the time you’d written this reply, you could’ve googled ‘sepsis signs’?

SomeFinElse · 23/10/2024 22:44

I genuinely feel like I’ve either fallen through a rip in reality or it’s April Fools Day and I’ve got my months muddled again (cheers, peri-menopause 😒)…..

Frying pans? Buttering the bread? Mayonnaise being involved? I’ve honestly never heard of this phenomenon existing.

I thought a ‘grilled cheese sandwich’ was what I’ve made in my panini press thingy for decades : dry bread (no butter) with slices of cheddar in, clamped in the metal jaws, eaten whilst hotter than the fires of hell.

It’s making me feel weird thinking I’ve been living a parallel life, and so many people I pass in the street were unbeknownst to me in on the whole mayonnaise / frying / pan / butter business. 😵‍💫

What difference does the grill make v a microwave? The end result is melted cheese between two slices of toast, but far more faff and cost to use the grill. Sounds like you are confusing a toastie with cheese on toast, which is always grilled.

mmmmbloodygorgeous · 23/10/2024 23:08

Some of you are eating some seriously fucking sad toasties. I pity the poor toasties being brought into existence like this even more than I pity you all for eating them.

YABU for not putting a better title. People might have missed this, thinking it was non cheese related.

You keep making these bland statements but not offering any explanations and seem to be having some kind of petit bourgeois hissy fit about anyone using a microwave.

TotHappy · 24/10/2024 00:23

Try this: make a cheese sandwich, with butter and cheese (grate it if you like, or thinly slice); beat up an egg or two, dip each side of the sandwich in the beaten egg, and fry in a hot pan into which you have decanted lots of salted butter. Flip after a few mins.

It's called a Cheese Dream 🧀

nOasistickets · 24/10/2024 00:26

Mayo?!?!? Yuck no! Sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen 😂 - and super american.

Mayonnaise on the outside instead of butter, plus a little bit of butter in the pan and your toasties will reach new heights.

Dh hates Mayonnaise, won't go near it, gates even picking up the jar. The last few toasties he has said how crispy the outside it and he really likes how I cooked them. Mayonnaise. Never sure whether to tell him or not.

Up to you if you tell him or not, depends if he can take being wrong...

Personally I love telling oh he has just enjoyed xxx on his sandwich, or plate of food or anything he has previously said he wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

I knows that I love it when I prove wrong his statements... why not? He gets to enjoy something he's previously avoided, and I get to feel smug... 🤭

TBF a teaspoon of mayo on the outside isn't adding much more to the vast amount of cheese in the middle. Cheese toastie not being the pinnacle of a health food

buffyfaithspike · 24/10/2024 00:50

Done in a pan, not greasy, just crispy

The other day Instagram thought I wanted to see a post that compared all the fats you could use on the outside of a toastie. To be fair I did. They even tested bacon fat. Who thinks ‘oh let’s make my cheese toastie in bacon fat?’

iirc the best was a mixture of butter and olive oil.

MamaToABeautifulBoy · 24/10/2024 01:07

This thread is hilarious! Some of you posters are so funny. Shame about the pointless argument over cheese (🤣) mid thread but other than that it’s been a highly entertaining 5 minutes 👏🏼 👏🏼 more like this, please.

I hope OP apologises to all those who die of sepsis, using their last two seconds of consciousness to click on this thread rather than a more appropriate life-saving one.

Having survived a six month incarceration in a hospital with full organ failure from sepsis I love this thread . Am feeling very unwell at the mo (and ever so slighty scared) and this thread has cheered me up no end 🤣

This. Just needs a thin smear of mayo on the outside.

Thanks, @Lytlethings, so nice to see someone else saying this. I certainly think that:
1.People should try to make titles as specific as possible.
2.People shouldn't use AIBU as a catch-all; clearly this belongs in the food forum.

Bigstuffypillow · 24/10/2024 01:24

I can't sleep, now I'm hungry, now I want a cheese toastie.
Incase your interested In another version, I make mine with sourdough bread, grated cheese mixed with I teaspoon of chutney. Butter the outside and cook in the George Foreman....crispy, oozy wonderfulness!
