I know I'm not BU. Everyone must know! Posting here to reach the maximum number of people whose lives could be changed by this information.

I have always made my toasties American style. Don't butter the bread, throw the butter in the frying pan and add assembled sandwich. Gorgeous.

But I've reached new heights! I've just discovered that the perfect way to make gorgeous bubbly melty cheese inside is to grate the cheese and mix with a spoonful of mayo 🤤

I'm amazed. How did I not know this before!

YABU to not put a fuller title to your post or add light-hearted. Click on posts thinking they may be important is a bit irritating.

TBF it was fairly obvious from the thread title that it was going to be something lighthearted. Never heard of bathos? 🙄

I just toast the bread in the toaster and melt the cheese in the microwave.

Melted cheese? In a microwave? Do you melt it on bread? Or in a bowl? Does it get warm enough and properly melt or just turn slightly droopy?

DoIWantTo · 22/10/2024 13:48

That’s an awful way to make a toastie, sounds greasy as fuck if you’re making it in the frying pan (why??? That’s a fried sandwich, not a toastie!!)

You couldn't be more wrong. The Americans call it a grilled cheese. It's crispy as fuck, rather than greasy as fuck.

The Americans know what they're doing.

YABU to destroy a perfectly good cheese toastie with the devils spawn.
Mayo is disgusting - the font of all evil.
its bad enough I can’t buy a prepacked sarnie
(apart from good old hoisin duck but they always run out by noon!) without you wanting to introduce it into home cooked fare…
Hang your head in shame you Jezebel!

Get that mayo in your toastie or get off my bloody thread!

Could all resident fun sponges please return to their docking stations. Management will redeploy you for your next assignment

Is a fun sponge defined as someone who sees a thread title about something important and expects to read something important?

Unless I'm missing something isn't that everyone?

mmmmbloodygorgeous · 22/10/2024 14:00

This is a moot point as the information in this case is unbelievably important.

🤣🤣 great response. I think small things which make people happier and share joy are as important as the big stuff! I also love a cheese toasties so will try this .

@mmmmbloodygorgeous spread a thin layer of mayo on the outside of the sandwich and Worcestershire sauce and black pepper in the cheese. You're welcome.

hard agree re thin layer of mayo on the outside.

DoIWantTo · 22/10/2024 14:01

@mmmmbloodygorgeous but a grilled cheese is made in the grill not a frying pan 🥺 I’m done with food not being what it’s called, so damn done that I need to go try this sandwich… 😂

Ah now here. You must know that the first rule of MN is that nothing good has ever ever come out of America. Ever.

In that case we must be using different dictionaries to define important

It's nice that you recently found out how to make a sandwich but that does not a vital public service announcement make

No it doesn't

But after reading the opening post then replying to tell the person that their post wasn't actually serious and you were expecting to see a post on the signs of sepsis or how to check your breasts is a bit...well...odd.

You could report the post?

Blarn · 22/10/2024 14:05

Mayonnaise on the outside instead of butter, plus a little bit of butter in the pan and your toasties will reach new heights.

Dh hates Mayonnaise, won't go near it, gates even picking up the jar. The last few toasties he has said how crispy the outside it and he really likes how I cooked them. Mayonnaise. Never sure whether to tell him or not.

mmmmbloodygorgeous · 22/10/2024 14:07

@DreamW3aver

You're right, sorry. I just checked and I've accidentally been consulting my Encyclopaedia of Cheese Toasties instead of my Collins dictionary. Whoops.

Nope not the definition of a fun sponge. Not everyone can be a fun sponge please don’t minimise their spongyness by saying everyone is a bit of a fun sponge.

maybe there should be a trigger warning in the title OP, contains content that may be construed by others as NOT IMPORTANT.

Wow I always thought a grilled cheese was made in the grill bit in the oven! It all makes sense now.

Dotjones · 22/10/2024 14:11

Nah, not a cheese and mayo fan. I only like mayo in very small quantities, on the side of the plate. I don't even mix my tuna with mayo.
So I think just butter the bread on the outside. Grating the cheese isn't a bad idea but more seems to fall out that way.

BeMintBee · 22/10/2024 14:14

I think Americans refer to what we consider the grill as a broiler. Grilling in america not the same as grilling in the UK.

RubyRooRed · 22/10/2024 14:15

rainfallpurevividcat · 22/10/2024 13:52

I just toast the bread in the toaster and melt the cheese in the microwave.

I do that too , just time the toasted bread to come out as the microwave pings and spread the melted cheese over the toast …
Splash of Worcestershire sauce and yum …

Now you see that's a very sensible suggestion

CTMBCBOANI could be added to the list if commonly used abbreviations

The nicest one I have ever eaten was in Tunisia. (In fact the whole experience at that restaurant was amazing and I asked the chef to marry me 😂)

Croque monsieur sandwich

Croque monsieur

Master the croque monsieur with soft sourdough, gruyère, smoked ham and creamy mustard mayo. You'll relish every mouthful of this brunch classic.

There's another post about hotel biscuits on here and the person starting that put lighthearted and still got told off by the first poster for "first World problems"

I don't know why she put lighthearted, biscuits are varied and quite topical and a have different strengths and weaknesses
