Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

If you would be fine with them having chicken dippers for dinner or tea then they are fine for breakfast.

midgetastic · 27/07/2024 11:44

And Birds Eye one do have sugar - dextrose

warningsecurityguards · 27/07/2024 11:44

We regularly do chicken dippers or fish fingers for breakfast - protein for the kids that dont like cereal.
Feels better than Nutella and croissants? Which would be their choice.

IncompleteSenten · 27/07/2024 11:46

Are they worse if you have them for breakfast than they would be if you had them for lunch?

I don't think it really matters what order meals are in.
Cereal for dinner, stew for breakfast 🤷 at the end of the days you've had all the variety no matter which way it went in

samarrange · 27/07/2024 11:47

There are no foods that are better or worse for breakfast or at any other time of the day. Go to pretty well anywhere in Asia and you will find that breakfast is what you or I might have for dinner.

However, there is a strong cultural effect. I love all kinds of foreign cuisine and when we went to Korea and Japan last year I thought I was going to enjoy eating different things for breakfast. But it turns out that I'm pretty conservative on that front: cereal/muesli, or some kind of bread/pastry, or German-style cold meats and cheese, or perhaps a full English if I'm in a hotel that serves it. When I was confronted with a buffet full of soups and noodles and vegetables and fish, I just couldn't get very excited about it. But I knew there was no right or wrong about it.

Differentstarts · 27/07/2024 11:47

Why are people on app raising a generation of kids that are going to end up with eating disorders. There is no such thing as good and bad food it's all about balance and I really hope nobody is having these ridiculous conversations infront of their children.

momager1 · 27/07/2024 11:47

in Canada, McDonalds has a chicken breakfast mcmuffin. I had one last time I was in canada and it was meh. But I would have destroyed a pack of nuggets if they were serving them, but not on the breakfast time menu.

NasiDagang · 27/07/2024 11:48

People in South East Asia have fish and rice for breakfast. Nothing wrong with that.

ABirdsEyeView · 27/07/2024 11:50

I can't imagine arguing with my dh over this tbh. He's fed the kids, which is one less thing to do!

MonsteraMama · 27/07/2024 11:50

He'd fed them chicken dippers, not cyanide. My daughter went through a phase where she'd only eat turkey nuggets for breakfast. She's still alive, happy and healthy.

You've already had an argument about it and now you want people to provide you more ammo to go back and argue more? Maybe just grow up?

And yeah, in a toss up of UPF between chicken dippers and cornflakes, chicken dippers probably are slightly better nutritionally, cornflakes might as well be a bowl of milky cardboard.

Sunshineandpool · 27/07/2024 11:50

Strange breakfast but no worse than cornflakes. If you want something healthier how about:

Eggs
Overnight oats
Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts

Member786488 · 27/07/2024 11:51

It’s unreasonable because they shouldn’t bloody exist.

the food we feed our kids in the UK is inedible processed crap in the large part, and the reasons for so many health issues imo.

we’ve lost sight of real food, and the animals that provide it as sentient creatures. Processing meat into this kind of crap is a large part of the problem.

Nothing like a huge bowl of kolo mee for breakfast! Totally oblivious it was 'different' until I took an English friend there and she quietly pointed it out to me 🤣

CortieTat · 27/07/2024 11:52

Unless their normal breakfast is something like homemade rye bread with avocado, poached egg and fermented vegetables, or overnight oats overnighting in kefir with nuts and seeds, and suddenly your DP gave them fried fast food for a change, I don’t see a problem.
Chicken dippers are as crap as cornflakes, easy to improve with a side of vegetables.

And the cost of the world feeds their children wholesome perfectly balanced food all the time no doubt ?

If there good enough for dinner or tea then why not breakfast?

Sunshineandpool · 27/07/2024 11:57

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 27/07/2024 11:15

Are cornflakes bad??? My daughter has them on rotation along with special k, multi grain cheerios and bran flakes. I thought cornflakes were ok!

Cereals are full of sugar and UPF. They pretend to be healthy, but they're not. I would say they're not great but there are worst breakfasts too!

My DC like them unfortunately. I mainly just buy Weetabix being one of the lowest sugar ones (along with shredded wheat.) But they have a box of Coco pops now and again too!

I agree. I'm currently reading Chris van Tulleken's book, "Ultra-processed People." It's fascinating and alarming in equal measure.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/07/2024 11:57

Having no breakfast is a bad breakfast, I remember once giving DD cold cocktail sausages in a bowel as we were really late for an appointment and had no milk for her Weetabix!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 27/07/2024 11:59

It's odd he's said they're better than cornflakes because those are ultra processed - aren't chicken dippers also not great if that's what you're judging on?

But sausages and bacon are seen as very normal breakfast foods so logically chicken dippers shouldn't be that different.

thiscantbemylife · 27/07/2024 12:00

Wish this could be my problems in life 😂 most cereal is ultra processed and full of sugar. Sure not amazing but Frosties or some other easy kid breakfast may not of been. Pick your battles it’s funny if anything.

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/07/2024 12:00

When I was growing up, one of my friends parents was fully of the 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' mindset, and they had their meals completely upside down, so breakfast would be meat and 2 veg style full meals, dinner would be toast and egg or cereal.

She grew up just fine, one of them dropped dead from having unusual breakfast foods so I'd have to say it's probably not a big deal.

SilverDoe · 27/07/2024 12:00

It’s the summer holidays, mine have had anything from homemade buttermilk pancakes with blueberries and greek yoghurt to ice pops to chocolate brownies 😅

Mostly they are at least having the grace to have some porridge or toast first, but I’m not too fussed; judging by my food shopping bill they’re getting enough bloody food down them 😕

Dancingqueen18 · 27/07/2024 12:01

I wish more chikdren had chicken dippers for breakfast occasionally. Many go to school having had a few spoons of of cereal or half a slice of toast to last them until lunch.

JudgeJ · 27/07/2024 12:02

BaronessBomburst · 27/07/2024 11:11

Look on the bright side, you can do cornflakes for dinner now - no cooking!

I will sometimes have fruit and fibre cereal with some added fresh fruit in the evening if I'm not particularly hungry, no food it designated as breakfast, lunch, dinner other than by usual practice.
