Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

What's wrong with them for breakfast now and then? It's not every morning right?

lovemycbf · 27/07/2024 13:02

I couldn't get upset over this as they've been fed 🤷‍♀️ not ideal but better than nothing

Ruelzdontapply · 27/07/2024 13:03

If there good enough for lunch or dinner then I don't see the issue with having them for breakfast.

FreebieWallopFridge · 27/07/2024 13:04

I’d take dippers over cornflakes.

Both are ultra processed.

letmeeatinpeace · 27/07/2024 13:05

I get hunger pangs if just eating cereal / carbs alone. Used to get lots of tummy aches as a kid, took until adulthood to figure out my body needs protein and/or fiber for breakfast. So for me personally chicken dippers are better. Check the ingredients, you can get nuggets that are less processed.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 27/07/2024 13:05

It depends on the alternatives on offer. If chicken dippers were instead of nothing I’d have been delighted. If he could have made avocado on toast with porridge and waffles with a drizzle of organic honey and almond nut butter I’d have probably thought that would have been preferable.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 27/07/2024 12:22

How about scrambled eggs and avocado on toast? That's got lots of good fats and protein in. Granted, most young children probably won't eat it but my DC like eggs and my eldest DD loved (still loves) avocado, so I guess mine are a bit different lol.

It's possible that I've read the OP all wrong, but I don't think she posted here in the hope of being offered healthy and nutritious breakfast alternatives to chicken dippers. I'm pretty sure she posted her in the hope of being offered a large baseball bat with a nail through it with which to beat up her husband.

Bertsmum22 · 27/07/2024 13:10

I mean it’s not the norm but why not?! It isn’t a balanced breakfast so maybe served with an egg and some fruit why not!! Not everyday though!

It's MN, and there's usually a massive crowd wave of hilarity and approval over this kind of thing.

There'll be several references to chicken nuggets being 'the food of the Gods' and fights will break out over someone daring to say they bake bread and anyone who prefers to avoid UPFs.

By this afternoon, there'll be a breakout handful of posters locked in their own scrap, telling each to piss off over giving kids a Big Mac once a day or being a leftie vegan middle class snobby fuckwit.

Mark my words.

GatoradeMeBitch · 27/07/2024 13:19

I've eaten chicken dippers recently. Bit sceptical about the amount of protein you'll find in there... But as long as your kids were happy and ate something who cares really.

MargaretThursday · 27/07/2024 13:25

I think it's great.

I've just had a can of coke, a piece of cheese and 3 Jaffa cakes for breakfast.
It was a lovely breakfast, all on my own. 🤣

Which is why the OP posted 😈

Erlanger · 27/07/2024 13:28

Not as bad as cereal, but still processed! Weird choice though lol.

Could he not have made them some eggs? 😂

SocksAndTheCity · 27/07/2024 13:28

I don't have any friends with young children so I'm aware my frame of reference will be different to that of many here, but I have never heard anybody utter the words 'ultra processed food' outwith this site.

The obsession with protein isn't unheard of, but it's usually in the context of not being hungry again right away rather than any lofty ideas about nutrition (for those who can afford to buy lots of lean protein food, at least).

Shan5474 · 27/07/2024 13:30

If you are feeding them for other meals then it seems the chicken dippers aren’t the problem, it’s more a case of what you believe should and shouldn’t be eaten in the morning. “Normal” breakfast foods are high in carbs and sugar to provide energy for the day, but other countries around the world eat savoury foods for breakfast. Both dippers and cornflakes are quite processed anyway, but if they will both be eaten in a day I don’t see why it makes much difference to eat dippers for breakfast and cornflakes for lunch.

Personally my favourite breakfast is last night’s leftovers - it’s hot, healthy and filling. But cereal or toast are quicker to eat and more convenient

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/07/2024 13:30

It does not matter that they are not a traditional breakfast food at all. Most “breakfast” foods in the UK are utterly worthless nutritionally. So if they eat chicken dippers generally it is intellectually unsustainable for you to object to them at breakfast. They are slightly better than cornflakes nutritionally I’d think because of the protein. Neither is great. But neither is going to harm your DC either provided they have other fresh food too.

Testina · 27/07/2024 13:31

If you’re happy to buy them and feed them to your kids, you’ll look like a dick if you try to come at him with some “nutrition” argument 😆

Sugarsugarahhoneyhoney · 27/07/2024 13:32

They are both ultra processed, not worth an argument over though.

It's a fairly left field choice for breakfast however I don't think it's the end of the world!

It's made wonder if I should get the fish fingers on the go tomorrow morning- for me, fish finger sandwich for brekkie! Grin

StaunchMomma · 27/07/2024 13:33

Chicken dippers are 100% UPF, whereas breakfast cereals are very often fortified with vitamins and minerals in the UK.

He sounds like a bit of an idiot, to be honest.

Nobody with even the slightest idea of nutrition would think chicken dippers are healthy because they have chicken in them (blended, pink, homogenous chicken bits, full of eyelids and bollocks is hardly a peak protein source!)

WeeOrcadian · 27/07/2024 13:34

Do you want to die on this hill OP?

They're fed. It's protein.

My DC would eat protein for every breakfast if I gave them the chance

Choose your battles

I knew cereal had vitamins and minerals added to it (I think this is by law? Not sure) but it’s interesting to see the dippers have added vits and mins too

The point is if they are OK for lunch or dinner (assuming he didn't go out specially to buy them) it doesn't make much difference what time of day you eat them.
