Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

Better than cornflakes. Better than bacon/sausages. Could definitely be worse. Sorry, I agree with your DH.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 27/07/2024 11:15

Are cornflakes bad??? My daughter has them on rotation along with special k, multi grain cheerios and bran flakes. I thought cornflakes were ok!

Hobbitfeet32 · 27/07/2024 11:15

It’s not helpful to think of foods and better or worse for you. They simply provide different nutrients. Chicken nuggets isn’t traditionally a breakfast food but there are no rules about what can and can’t be eaten for breakfast. As a 1 off it’s fine. If you had it every day then no it wouldn’t be balanced diet. Cornflakes provide different nutrients, are fortified with many vitamins and are usually eaten with milk which again provides more nutrients.
Our food choices are influenced by many more factors than just nutritional content, enjoyment being one of them.

Twistybranch · 27/07/2024 11:15

Yes they are getting protein and that fills you up longer, so better than cereal. But dippers are ultra processed.

maybe he should just stick to eggs if he wants to serve protein at breakfast

Persipan · 27/07/2024 11:16

I have never really been able to get my head round the idea that certain foods are only supposed to be eaten at certain times if day so I'm Team 'if it's okay for lunch or dinner, it's okay for breakfast'.

I actually quite fancy some Quorn nuggets, now you mention it (I've got covid and I can't really be bothered with food so this is a good thing!)

BobbyBiscuits · 27/07/2024 11:17

The birds eye ones can't have that much protein. They are tiny with really thick batter. Taste like crap too.
Americans sometimes eat chicken for breakfast I think? I reckon if he bought posh chicken breast pieces and then used own breadcrumbs it probably is quite healthy.
Otherwise it's gross. But not because of the time of day, just cos they're horrible!
Cornflakes have no nutritional value at all so they're not good either?
Bet the kids weren't complaining, haha.

Neveranynamesleft · 27/07/2024 11:18

Who first decided what should or shouldn't be eaten at breakfast or dinner or tea ? Why does cereal have to be eaten in the morning at breakfast ? Fish and chips at teatime ? Irrespective of the debate around processed food, it's all just food...eat what you want !

LostTheMarble · 27/07/2024 11:19

Globules · 27/07/2024 11:08

It's school holidays. Chicken dippers are a worthy breakfast.

I've just had fish and rice for breakfast. Is that wrong too?

It's school holidays.

It certainly is..

Kelloggs. Stroke of genius really.

NuffSaidSam · 27/07/2024 11:20

If you give them dippers generally then YABU, no worse at breakfast than at any other time.

If you'd normally make your own nuggets/don't do UPF generally, then yes they're less healthy than something homemade.

He's right that they have more protein and are probably better than cornflakes.

AgnesX · 27/07/2024 11:20

MossGrowsFat · 27/07/2024 11:09

Better than sugar processed cereal everyday

In fairness cereal's a way of trying to get food into kids in the morning especially if they're not great eaters early on.

Manufacturers should cut down on sugar though, and not replace it with artificial sweetness either.

LemonRedwood · 27/07/2024 11:21

Well I really fancy some chicken dippers now

LostTheMarble · 27/07/2024 11:22

How old are the kids op, not great for toddlers but teenagers would probably cook that for themselves any time of day. Are they old enough to grab their own breakfast @Junestepe ?

fruitpastille · 27/07/2024 11:23

If you google the nutrition info and ingredients for both products you can see that neither is amazing or terrible. Dippers have 13g protein but also 13g fat (only actually 50% chicken). Cornflakes 7g protein but 8g sugar, ingredients really not that bad. Cornflakes will be cheaper!

Do you really think he's going to cook dippers every morning? They are a bit of a weird choice but honestly I couldn't be bothered to argue about this.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 27/07/2024 11:26

They’re not exactly healthy, but no worse for breakfast than lunch or dinner.

So if you’re arguing they’re awful and shouldn’t be in the house, fine. But if you’re arguing that they’re fine for lunch but not for breakfast, I disagree.

liveforsummer · 27/07/2024 11:27

If you're ok with feeding chicken dippers in general then they bare a perfectly ok choice for breakfast and will leave dc far filler for longer than a bowl of cornflakes for sure. Mumsnet hates food like this though. A thread about a dc walking to greggs and was it age appropriate was massively derailed by the fact the dc was eating a sausage roll. You may not get balanced answers on account of this!

Borninabarn32 · 27/07/2024 11:30

It's not traditional but I bet chicken dippers scrabled eggs and toast would be a tasty and filling breakfast.

Probably better than cornflakes.

Birds eye chicken dippers have 11g of protein per serving of 5 dippers, depending on the age of the children that could be around half or a third of their needs for the day.
Most children in the UK get far more protein than they actually need and too much can have a detrimental effect.

Olika · 27/07/2024 11:34

I would prefer nuggets over cornflakes. Neither is healthy but at least nuggets keep hunger away longer.

Ubugly · 27/07/2024 11:35

They are chopped and reformed from chicken breasts so they aren't chicken fillets.

Guess it's no different to eating chicken sausages...not that i would eat either for breakfast.

My ex gave my son a can of full fat coke for breakfast. That is only acceptable for hangovers purposes.

rainbowunicorn · 27/07/2024 11:38

Presumably,if you have chicken dippers in the house the children would be eating them at some point anyway. Why is having them for breakfast any different to them having chicken dippers for lunch or dinner?

CustardCreams2 · 27/07/2024 11:42

Bit weird but better than nothing

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/07/2024 11:43

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/07/2024 11:09

🤣 Unusual yes and sure they’re processed but I don’t see how it’s any worse than your typical breakfast meats like sausage or bacon, or other processed breakfast foods like cereal. And they’re high protein and no sugar. So team DH and the chicken dippers, sorry OP!

This. Although, personally, I wouldn't eat them any time of day but no worse than sausages which are part of a traditional breakfast.

midgetastic · 27/07/2024 11:43

Aren't chicken dippers ultra processed themselves ? Or is he making them himself ?

HumansAreDestroyers · 27/07/2024 11:43

Neither cornflakes nor chicken dippers constitute a "good breakfast" imo. Both are ultraprocessed and, again imo, revolting!

A better breakfast would be eggs (scrambled, boiled, fried, poached or whatever) and some wholemeal toast - but NOT made with crappy UPF bread though.

Alternatively, cheese on toast, or sardines on toast, or perhaps a good quality granola with some Greek yogurt and fruit, or porridge (not instant).
