Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

I agree with the majority of posters here, it's no different from having sausage, egg and bacon or something equivalent, it just sounds "wrong" because it's not the norm.

He has a point about the nutritional value, cereal isn't exactly fantastic either but it's widely accepted as a perfectly normal breakfast choice.

Did the kids eat it all? If so, I'd let this one drop!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 27/07/2024 12:05

I really can't see the issue. Most of Europe has meat/cheese for breakfast everyday.

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/07/2024 12:06

However if he wants to do dinner foods for breakfast right, then it really should have been fishfinger sandwiches. I love a fishfinger sandwich for breakfast.

It’s unreasonable because they shouldn’t bloody exist.

the food we feed our kids in the UK is inedible processed crap in the large part, and the reasons for so many health issues imo.

we’ve lost sight of real food, and the animals that provide it as sentient creatures. Processing meat into this kind of crap is a large part of the problem.

We don't all feed our kids chicken dippers, tbf!

Oganesson118 · 27/07/2024 12:10

If you're anti UPF, then surely you wouldn't have them in the house. Why are they ok for lunch or tea but not breakfast?

SD1978 · 27/07/2024 12:10

It's not a good breakfast- it's processed shite, but as a one off- meh. Couldnt get that het up. Unless you have a massive drip feed coming.

When I was growing up, one of my friends parents was fully of the 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' mindset, and they had their meals completely upside down, so breakfast would be meat and 2 veg style full meals, dinner would be toast and egg or cereal.

She grew up just fine, one of them dropped dead from having unusual breakfast foods so I'd have to say it's probably not a big deal.

One of them dropped dead from eating a roast at breakfast time and you don't think that's a big deal? 😂

pandasorous · 27/07/2024 12:12

tbf they are both terrible in terms of upf. but chicken dippers better as at least has some protein.

across the world people have all sorts of dishes for breakfast... in south Asia, people might have paratha or roti with various curries, some people have rice and curry even. so there really is no set rule for breakfast

Glitterybee · 27/07/2024 12:12

It makes no difference if they have chicken dippers for breakfast and cornflakes for supper 🤷‍♀️

I have been known to have curry or pizza for breakfast and then breakfast type foods for dinner so definitely see no issue with this

Cornflakes are also "processed crap" though, surely? Why are they any better?

Having no breakfast is a bad breakfast, I remember once giving DD cold cocktail sausages in a bowel as we were really late for an appointment and had no milk for her Weetabix!

Now that is BU 😂

Although 75% of the votes and the majority of the comments are saying it's fine to!!

OP I'm with you, UPF such as chicken dippers are not a great choice at any time and in their defence cornflakes these days are supplemented with added vitamins/minerals and the sugar and salt content has been much reduced from the old days. The milk you'd serve them with also supplies protein and calcium, throw some fresh fruit on there as well and for my money you have a breakfast that;s far superior to chicken dippers.

Sugarlily · 27/07/2024 12:16

Cornflakes aren’t UPF and Chicken Dippers are. Look at the ingredients. Yes they’re processed as have some extra ingredients but they’re not UPF

Cornflakes are fortified with important vitamins

Cornflakes are usually eaten with milk which is good for bones

TooTiredOfThisShit · 27/07/2024 12:17

It's the exact same food at 7am as at 7pm...

Meanwhile33 · 27/07/2024 12:17

Cornflakes have almost zero nutrition in them. Chicken dippers for breakfast is unusual, but they’re no worse for kids at breakfast time than they are at any other time. Protein as part of breakfast is a really good idea because it keeps you full and energised until lunch.

My mum (who didn’t grow up in this country) used to feed us fish fingers for breakfast sometimes, using the same logic as your DH, and I always enjoyed them until I learned from school friends that fish fingers are a really weird thing to eat for breakfast.

CosyFanTucci · 27/07/2024 12:18

They're both unhealthy breakfasts.

Thunder8090 · 27/07/2024 12:18

I couldn't stomach it personally. In fact the thought of it is making me queasy.
Plus aren't they ultra processed?

Tell him to give them a chicken breast next time.

Hobbitfeet32 · 27/07/2024 12:19

Those that are demonising cereal. Again please think beyond nutritional content as to why people choose this to eat for breakfast. It’s quick, cheap, has a long shelf life, is easily transported, can be had dry or with milk, doesnt require cooking, is commonly liked, provide a range of nutrients, are accessible in supermarkets and small shops. Mumsnet really has no clue about nutrition or food choices sometimes.

Ooft, nice one. Chicken dippers with hash browns. Breakfast of fattiesBlush champions!

Lwrenn · 27/07/2024 12:20

whichfan · 27/07/2024 11:08

my children have pain au chocolates for weekend breakfast

i’m guessing less nutritional value than chicken dippers

The nutritional value may be utterly shite but the phemonal taste of buttery, chocolatey pastries is fully worth it.

Have you seen the pistachio creme that's quite popular for puddings at the moment? I made croissants (with the premade pastry) stuffed with that and topped with crushed pistachio and almonds a few weeks ago.

Worth every last calorie.

JMSA · 27/07/2024 12:21

Mind you, I'd choose Quorn dippers (nuggets?) all day long, though they're processed too.

MaltipooMama · 27/07/2024 12:21

My partner had last night's (now cold) beef stir fry for breakfast 🤣 I think chicken dippers are ok as long as it's not everyday!

are two of the greatest typos ever and I am dying over here 😂😂😂

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 27/07/2024 12:22

How about scrambled eggs and avocado on toast? That's got lots of good fats and protein in. Granted, most young children probably won't eat it but my DC like eggs and my eldest DD loved (still loves) avocado, so I guess mine are a bit different lol.
