Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

Chicken dippers are 100% UPF, whereas breakfast cereals are very often fortified with vitamins and minerals in the UK.

He sounds like a bit of an idiot, to be honest.

Nobody with even the slightest idea of nutrition would think chicken dippers are healthy because they have chicken in them (blended, pink, homogenous chicken bits, full of eyelids and bollocks is hardly a peak protein source!)

I'm not sure about eyelids, but I'm pretty sure there's loads of protein in bollocks.

LBFseBrom · 27/07/2024 13:36

I've never had them so I looked them up and, from what I read, they seem quite nice. I'm sure it is OK to have them for breakfast, children are funny about breakfast anyway, often don't have much, so I think it is good if they ate and enjoyed.

Birds eye, and many other chicken dippers are 100% chicken breast there are no eyes, bollocks etc. Not saying they are healthy but your description is very wrong.

Lets list the UPFs, though;

Cornflakes - Barley malt extract.

Chicken dippers - Rapeseed oil, disodium diphosphates, dextrose, flavourings & colourings.

I know which one I'd rather feed to my child.

ButternutSoup · 27/07/2024 13:39

Personally I think both are not great, as they are processed food. But processed food is okay once in a while, I think. I do think the chicken dippers are better than cornflakes, as they have more protein, which will keep the kids full and satisfied for longer than some sugary cereal and milk.

godmum56 · 27/07/2024 13:40

I think the OP is asking the wrong question. As @SquigglePigs says they are either an ok meal for a child or they are not. The timing of the meal is not relevant.

rainbowunicorn · 27/07/2024 13:43

There are a lot of people on this site who spout that things are nutritionally void and have no nutrients in. I think these people should maybe Google what the definition of nutrients is.
There are also lots of people banging on about protein. Most children in the UK get much more protein than they need. Too much can actually be detrimental. Children have very different nutritional needs to that of adults.
It seems like most people banging on about UPF, nutrients, protein etc are completely clueless and are just parroting rubbish that they have read on here. The source of which was probably a tic toc or insta post in the first place and suddenly they are all experts.

TheHuntSyndicate · 27/07/2024 13:45

Another poor man who can't do right for doing wrong.

The children were fed and happy. Job done.

PerfectTravelTote · 27/07/2024 13:46

Are they the only options?

They're both UPF.

I think that cornflakes would be the better of the two if you left out the cornflakes and just went with the bowl of milk!

@PerfectTravelTote

what should her kids be having do you think?

Darkdiamond · 27/07/2024 13:53

Haven't read the full thread but other cultures frequently have an array of foods which children eat for breakfast, that many Westerners wouldn't even consider. Fish, spicy curries, rice, pickled fruit/veg etc and all manner of other food. If you deem a substance suitable for consumption at lunch time or dinner, then it is still edible and still has the same nutritional value in the morning.

Honestly, just the title made me feel a bit sick. Im going to have to hide the thread now!

JLou08 · 27/07/2024 14:10

Both are UPF. Chicken nuggets have more protein, cereal has more sugar. Chicken nuggets probably are healthier. Cereal companies have sold a lie that cereal is healthy.

I agree. I'm currently reading Chris van Tulleken's book, "Ultra-processed People." It's fascinating and alarming in equal measure.

It's also a gross oversimplification of many complex issues. Have a look at this too: https://www.canihaveanothersnack.com/the-truth-about-ultra-processed-foods/

Ultravox · 27/07/2024 14:22

Don’t think either of them are great for breakfast tbh as they are both so processed.

Sosorryliver · 27/07/2024 14:23

I think the idea of cornflakes for breakfast is the result of really good marketing no reason you can’t have anything for breakfast. Dc are having chicken nuggets for lunch so I might be biased though.

TroysMammy · 27/07/2024 14:24

Considering the quote says "breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a pauper" got me thinking. Why do we have a bowl of cereal for breakfast when you supposed to be breaking a fast? Eating a big meal late in the evening doesn't give you time to burn it off before bed time.

Who says we must have cereal for breakfast (Kelloggs probably) and chicken dippers for dinner? It's all food however chicken dippers are ultra processed food and are in my opinion not healthy. They could get protein from eggs which are a more acceptable breakfast food.

Behave. Ask Mumsnet for a trigger warning on the title before you tuck into you quinoa and avocado.

N123C · 27/07/2024 14:27

I don't think cereals are very good 😣

tuvamoodyson · 27/07/2024 14:33

Well, if you’re happy for them to eat them at all, what difference does the time of day make?

I'll have a look at that, thanks.

I'm aware CVT's book was written for the masses, so the science had to be dumbed down in order for the average bod like me to be able to get the gist.

Why is it any worse than cornflakes? Has more protein for a start. It's only certain parts of the world that have " breakfast" food you know

I agree.

Neither are ideal but the chicken dippers would be a preferable choice, especially as they’ll keep them fuller for longer.

People have sausages and bacon for breakfast, so why not chicken dippers.

If they were homemade then they’d be absolutely fine.
It’s only because they’re processed that makes them less healthy.

But if you MAKE chicken dippers then they don't have all that stuff. Just chicken breast and breadcrumbs.
