Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

OP posts:

If you are happy to feed them dippers for tea, then they are fine for breakfast too.

In winter I sometimes have soup for breakfast. Healthy and warm. Kippers, smoked haddock, sausage and bacon are all eaten at breakfast, so what's weird about chicken?

Orquid · 27/07/2024 12:24

Dont see an issue, not the most balanced but neither are cereal.

what is a good breakfast? Eggs, yogurt, cheese, fruit?

Sugarlily · 27/07/2024 12:25

Cornflakes have a LOT more nutrients and a LOT less fat.

children need 30-40% of their calories to come from fat.

Those that are demonising cereal. Again please think beyond nutritional content as to why people choose this to eat for breakfast. It’s quick, cheap, has a long shelf life, is easily transported, can be had dry or with milk, doesnt require cooking, is commonly liked, provide a range of nutrients, are accessible in supermarkets and small shops. Mumsnet really has no clue about nutrition or food choices sometimes.

It's more that OP is claiming cornflakes to be massively superior when in reality, they're really not.

Cornflakes are just fine for breakfast, but so are chicken dippers, really. It's just food.

Kelloggs. Stroke of genius really.

I was going to say the same thing.

A.very successful marketing ploy to sell cheap processed grains to the masses.

Along with snacks being needed for your metabolism.

I don't eat breakfast often but it's scrambled eggs with butter; feta with olives and salad or Greek yoghurt and berries when I do.

We wouldn't eat chicken dippers (never bought them) but anything I'd serve for lunch, I'd have at breakfast too so, on that basis, they're fine.

Lwrenn · 27/07/2024 12:26

I've been reading a few blogs recently about UPFs and cereals and shredded wheat, apparently aldis own isn't UPF and also a cereal from the brand BEAR that's quite new is also pretty good.
Not in any way a nutritional expert personally but my DC would eat cereal for every meal given the opportunity so I'm trying to make sure the ones I give aren't the ones ladled with pure sugar.
(Just if anyone is looking for some alternatives to frosties and my personal favourite, coco pops.)

I'm wondering how many shift workers have thread this thread and thought about the times they've eaten a lamb chop dinner at 7am 😂

Hobbitfeet32 · 27/07/2024 12:27

@sunsetsandboardwalks i know! Which is exactly what I said in my first post. Foods are not healthy or unhealthy. They provide different nutrients but I want to make the point that nutritional content is just one of many factors we take into account when making food choices. Enjoyment and resources are well up there as well!

StormingNorman · 27/07/2024 12:28

They’re no worse than cornflakes and the protein content will help keep them full for longer than a bowl of cereals. I like his thinking!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/07/2024 12:32

My breakfasts are usually a choice between;

Salmon/Tuna/Prawns
Rice/GF Pasta/Rice Noodles
Hardboiled egg
Veg
Salad
Feta/olives/melon/onion/cucumber/hummus

Haven't keeled over so far. Sometimes DP chucks some strawberries in a compartment with yoghurt as an extra.

Add in a couple of buckets of black coffee and I'm good until dinner. Wouldn't see a problem with having chicken instead.

Bjorkdidit · 27/07/2024 12:32

If he'd have done home made chicken goujons from strips of chicken breast coated in crushed cornflakes would that have been OK with you OP?

But seriously, both cornflakes and bought nuggets are a bit crappy so no good if you want good nutrition.

Although 75% of the votes and the majority of the comments are saying it's fine to!!

OP I'm with you, UPF such as chicken dippers are not a great choice at any time and in their defence cornflakes these days are supplemented with added vitamins/minerals and the sugar and salt content has been much reduced from the old days. The milk you'd serve them with also supplies protein and calcium, throw some fresh fruit on there as well and for my money you have a breakfast that;s far superior to chicken dippers.

I think people are not saying that chicken dippers are ok but cornflakes are just as rubbish. They are UPF too.

You can supplement UPF with as much vitamins as you like, it doesn't mean you will absorb much. You need natural foods for that. And maybe it has been reduced but it's still a bowl of sugary rubbish.

And tbf, you can give chicken dippers with a glass of milk and some fruit - doesn't make them any less rubbish.

Pick the battle- my daughter had strawberries, carrots, tomatoes, cucumber and peppers with a few mini marshmallows and some sprinkles on top.
Mon- Fri is ‘normal brekkie’ weekend is her pick.

What sort of time do you eat that? I don't think I could face that at 6am before work or even 8am on my days off!

Nobodywouldknow · 27/07/2024 12:35

They’re better than cereals and toast with jam. Depends on how ultra processed they are but if made with chicken breast and a few breadcrumbs they are probably quite good. Why are you so convinced they are bad? You clearly have them in the house so presumably would serve them for dinner so why not breakfast? Just because the Kelloggs ads tell you that cereal is the ideal breakfast doesn’t make it true.

LlynTegid · 27/07/2024 12:36

Once a decade maybe, not any more often.

spikeandbuffy · 27/07/2024 12:43

I love a savoury breakfast! Often have avocado, feta, red onion and tomatoes on toast
Or left over curry/chinese

SoOriginal · 27/07/2024 12:44

Chicken dippers are ultra processed. They have dextrose and caramel colouring in them. I wouldn’t feed it to my children for breakfast, lunch or dinner!!
Cornflakes is basically 100% carb. Maize and malt barley extract. It has nothing nasty in it at least, but isn’t a balanced meal.
Of the two, cornflakes is less harmful.

Just read the ingredients in your food.

1yearplan · 27/07/2024 12:45

My dc would have thought this was so silly and fun for breakfast when they were little. It's not traditional and it's not the end of the world either.

Heydiddlediddlethecatandthefiddle · 27/07/2024 12:46

He is being unreasonable because the chicken dippers are also UPF so that reason makes no sense.

Silviasilvertoes · 27/07/2024 12:47

Well they’re definitely ultra processed but so are corn flakes. Agree probably slightly more nutrition in chicken dippers than cornflakes if you’re going to go for one or the other for breakfast or any time.

Mine had chocolate mini rolls for breakfast on the first day of the holidays, with TV and chocolate milk. I wouldn’t do it every day but for the first day/week of the holiday, pretty much anything goes while we all chill a bit.

As a one-off it’s fine but I wouldn’t be impressed on a regular basis.

Xmasbaby11 · 27/07/2024 12:48

I wouldn't want to serve chicken dippers for breakfast - processed and high in fat. Like most things, it's ok once in a while, and depends how things balance out over the day/week.

Oooh I need to try that. And leftover curry is the best for breakfast. DH hates it the day after so I get all of it 😁

Edited

About 9.30 at my desk going through emails.

Never been able to stomach modern UK breakfast-type foods and cannot be doing with sitting around eating before leaving for work, but pre-coeliac days and when I was usually waiting in the freezing cold for a 5.45am train that was never guaranteed to arrive (muttering bloody trains all the while), I had been known to have a hot steak and kidney pie flipped lid side down to prevent explosive leaks or a cheese & onion pasty.

purplecheesecat · 27/07/2024 12:57

Bit weird but not a problem unless they’re eating them every day
IMO this isn’t really an issue
