Help me settle an an argument. DH served kids a breakfast of chicken Dippers!!!. It has caused an argument. He thinks dippers are a good breakfast food full of protein. He thinks it's a better breakfast than cornflakes which are ultra processed.
Please arm me the facts on why birds eye chicken dippers are a terrible breakfast. I need to present him with facts. I'm not a nutrition expert but know enough to know this is not a good breakfast. Mumsnet pls hit me up with some facts.

Now I want chicken dippers for breakfast 😋

As a one off, I’d let it go. If it became a regular thing, then I’d dig my heals in, and say no. Chicken dippers are as ultra processed, I would argue, (if not more so), than cornflakes. How much proper chicken meat do they contain, or are they made up of minced up grunge? Sorry, I really don’t know, as I don’t eat them, never have, and never will; whereas I’ll admit, I’ve eaten cornflakes in the past, but my assumption is that cornflakes are made from unadulterated corn. (Some one might be along very soon to correct me on this, as I really don’t know the manufacturing process of turning corn into cornflakes - I suppose the real issue arises by how many additives are added during the process, including sugar, which we know, if it’s not a natural sugar, then it, too, is harmful if partaken regularly). However, my understanding is that some chicken products are made from “reformed” parts of the chicken, which will include all sorts of bits, not necessarily pure chicken meat, and perhaps chicken dippers fall into this category - but I’m willing to be corrected if wrong. Don’t forget the coating they are probably covered with, too - what does that contain?
I would not, personally, be feeding such ‘re-formed’ products on a regular basis to anyone in my family.
As I say, a one off, ok (perhaps), but not all the time - though, for me, personally, they don’t figure on my shopping list. Never have.

Cornflakes contain salt but no saturated fat, according to my research. Chicken dippers may contain more pure chicken than other chicken products, but tend to be high in both salt and saturated fat, so should be regarded as an occasional treat, according to the BHF (British Heart Foundation).
Of course, once you add extras to your cornflakes, then you are upping things which should be consumed in moderation - sugar, saturated fat (from milk). Go for porridge 😂😂.

Chicken dippers are good for breakfast. Add a glass of orange juice and you have a balanced meal

Harmonypus · 29/07/2024 02:42

I agree that chicken is full of protein whereas cornflakes aren't, but I'd say that there is a lot more 'processing' involved in the production of chicken dippers than in cornflakes.

mandlerparr · 29/07/2024 03:50

I mean, just corn flakes or just chicken dippers are both not a complete meal. Not saying I don't do that, just that neither are a complete meal. The dippers probably keep them full for a longer time though, reducing snacking on even more junk food or being hungry. Next time you serve them corn flakes, add some fruit and a boiled egg. Next time they serve chicken dippers, they should add some carrots and hummus, or peas, or some other vegetable. Or a microwaved potato. It is hard to get kids to eat veggies.

If you're ok with feeding chicken dippers in general then they bare a perfectly ok choice for breakfast and will leave dc far filler for longer than a bowl of cornflakes for sure. Mumsnet hates food like this though. A thread about a dc walking to greggs and was it age appropriate was massively derailed by the fact the dc was eating a sausage roll. You may not get balanced answers on account of this!

I skipped that thread, as it didn’t look very interesting from its title, but after seeing your post, I’ve read it.

It’s actually one of the best threads we’ve ever had. The virtue signaling derailing is right from the very first post. If you haven’t read it yet, it will revolutionize what you consider to be peak mumsnet.

I don't see the problem. Processed carby cereals are terrible breakfasts.

We never eat sugary stuff in the morning. Eggs, cheese, jacket potatoes, even pizza, seem more filling.

Why are people on app raising a generation of kids that are going to end up with eating disorders. There is no such thing as good and bad food it's all about balance and I really hope nobody is having these ridiculous conversations infront of their children.

This is MN remember. There are some very extreme food views on here. Fortunately many more of us have a grain or two of common sense.

I agree that people shouldn't be having these discussions in front of their children (and I really wish they didn't feel the need to force their views onto the rest of us either!)

LBFseBrom · 29/07/2024 12:43

I think it's marvellous that they will eat breakfast, so many children just play with it when they are small.

Food is metabolised better on an empty stomach so if they are having chicken dippers, better to have them first thing and have more 'healthy' food later. I have never had chicken dippers (or nuggets), but they don't seem too bad and if the kids enjoyed, that's all good.

It's only people who live on junk food that have health problems in later life, occasionally doesn't hurt. A little of what you fancy does you good.

Nipsmum · 29/07/2024 16:02

There is little difference between chicken dippers and the traditional British Bacon and fried eggs.
Maybe it's not worth arguing about.

In what sense?

Ingredients wise there's a huge difference.

On the Continent, they eat cheese and meat for breakfast. I know chicken dippers are not the norm for breakfast but I can’t see that they are any worse for you than cornflakes. They are both ultra processed and both full of shit in the end, at least the chicken dippers have a little bit of protein in them. I really couldn’t get myself in a pickle over this, life is just too short!

LBFseBrom · 30/07/2024 14:11

They do, also sweet things like croissants and pastries. The only time I ever have anything sweet if I fancy it (I don't have a sweet tooth), is at breakfast. It metabolises easier and more quickly.

I like continental breakfasts.

BitOutOfPractice · 30/07/2024 14:27

if you think the OP will be shocked at cheese and meat they eat in the continent, she’ll lose her mind when she hears about kippers!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/07/2024 14:44

Ugh! Wouldn't the milk make all the bread crumbs float off?
