Biden Trump debate- they must get rid of Biden now?

Biden looked so frail and incoherant at times that this must be the end of his Presidency very soon.
How have the Democrats not faced this sooner and selected someone else, I don't understand why they have let this go on for so long.
He had to be helped off the stage by his wife and it seems like elder abuse.

I do agree. It’s actually very sad to see. I have no idea how they go about replacing their candidate at this stage , but sadly, Biden will just hand this to Trump.

CroftonWillow · 28/06/2024 07:18

There'll be a mechanism but first things first they have to face the reality it needs to happen. They seem to be in denial at the moment and wasting precious time. I'd have thought Kamala Harris is the only option at this stage. She needs to start getting out there.

AgnesX · 28/06/2024 07:19

It's heartbreaking. The Republicans are likely to win as a default.

I'm so sorry for America (especially as Trump is being influenced by the obnoxious Farage and all that he stands for).

fliptopbin · 28/06/2024 07:19

It is a sad situation when a man feels like he has to push himself on in the most important position in the world into his eighties because it seems like he is the only person who can counter the existential threat to democracy which is Trump.

WhereToStartAgain · 28/06/2024 07:20

Haven't watched it yet, so can't properly comment but I keep hearing mention of elder abuse and, I have to say, it's starting to sell like this and someone needs to put a stop to it.

And then we are pretty much guaranteed WWIII. I am so angry the democrats didn’t find another candidate and angry with Biden for not stepping down. Trump will be an utter disaster for the world, not just America. Why hasn’t Biden retired? When he’s on top form he’s great but he’s clearly struggling. He’s the safest option though because he will have a team of good people around him advising him. Trump will only have sycophants.

Is he being pushed into it or does his ego get in the way?

Keepingongoing · 28/06/2024 07:23

I think I heard that there isn’t an obvious mechanism; Biden needs to consent to standing aside.

It’s incredibly worrying, not just for Americans but for us all. My father believes that Trump would be a full- on Fascist in a heartbeat if he thought he could get away with it,

shearwater2 · 28/06/2024 07:24

I don't understand why Kamala Harris couldn't run. Why are these dreadful old gimmers in line to run the most powerful country on earth? Trump is also too old and a convicted felon. It's all so fucked up.

CelesteCunningham · 28/06/2024 07:26

It's terrifying that this is the best the Democrats reckon they could come up with to go against Trump. I haven't seen any coverage but read the BBC summary this morning that was pretty damning. I might not seek out any more than that.

Isn’t it a case of who gets the presidential nomination in the Primaries? Don’t think you can just put a different person on the ballot.

No equivalent of the 1922 committee, in other words

Cattyisbatty · 28/06/2024 07:27

its a ridiculous situation
A criminal megalomaniac vs someone who should be in a care home.
Come on America, you can do better.

It’s pretty dire that in a country that big and that well resourced that these two specimens are the best they could find! Biden is clearly the safest choice but it’s like you have a fire to put out and your choice is an egg cup of water or soaked bath sponge. Neither are going to do the job well. At least Biden comes with a team he will listen to of hopefully bright capable people. Trump won’t listen to anyone, he’s a giant toddler.

I don’t understand the system at all. What would happen if he stood down?

I skimmed the headlines and, like you, I don't want to see any more. I don't understand how the Democrats have reached this point but I think they have been so obsessed with ideologies that they took their eye off the ball.

We have friends and family in USA on both sides of the political spectrum and they are all afraid of what November will bring, mostly the fear is around civil dissent. But they all think Trump will get in, no one believes Biden will, not even the Democrat supporters.

He can stand aside (Biden), but I think at this point no one can make him do that. If he did, various hopefuls within the Democrats would be launching bids but ir would be very, very last minute and not much time to build support.

ThreeFeetTall · 28/06/2024 07:35

the Us wouldn't elect an experienced white woman so they are not about to elect Harris.

theresnolimits · 28/06/2024 07:35

Kamala Harris is not popular. If there was a strong VP things might be different.

AmusedMaker · 28/06/2024 07:38

It is sad. I feel sorry for him.
Trump seems young next to him.

Thank you. That sounds like a better option than Biden staying.

Ionacat · 28/06/2024 07:41

I’ve read a few American news sites following last night. The democrats don’t appear to be up for a bloody fight which they would have if they need to force Joe Biden to stand down, if he stands down then there’s no obvious replacement. According to one website Kamala Harris’ approval ratings aren’t great either and there’s a big question mark whether the US is ready for a black female president. However several big name democrats have said he needs to stand down - Barrack Obama’s campaign manager who had been staunchly Biden until now. According to the news sites, I read, it will come down to the big Democrat donors as the reality is that they pull the strings.

I've been saying this since forever. Biden's age and frailty mightnt be quite such and issue if there was a more populat and capable VP (think an Al Gore type figure). It increasingly looks like there is very little chance Biden could do 4 years if elected so effectively you are voting for Harris. But after last night's debate and if something is not done, it may be a moot point because its Trumps, to lose God help us.

EasternStandard · 28/06/2024 07:43

That was a disaster and now I’m concerned about the instability here and elsewhere
