Biden Trump debate- they must get rid of Biden now?

molotovcupcakes · 28/06/2024 07:10

Biden looked so frail and incoherant at times that this must be the end of his Presidency very soon.
How have the Democrats not faced this sooner and selected someone else, I don't understand why they have let this go on for so long.
He had to be helped off the stage by his wife and it seems like elder abuse.

These internal debates were happening within the Democratic Party before the primary elections in March:

  1. Biden is the only person who has ever beaten trump.
  2. Historically, whenever there was a big push to rally the troops and get a serious contender to go up against a sitting president within their own party, the contender never won against the current president to secure the nomination. And the internal strife/televised debates/energy spent arguing internally within their own party/etc caused so much damage to the current president, that once it came to the actual election, they lost.
Pick your poison.

@GiveMeSpanakopita yes - two insightful posts there. I think you’re spot on.

I suspect we’re the same generation - and we have taken things for granted.

I don't understand why Kamala Harris couldn't run. Why are these dreadful old gimmers in line to run the most powerful country on earth? Trump is also too old and a convicted felon. It's all so fucked up.

Yes! Why can't she? I've been wondering that.
I had reasonably high hopes for her but she just seemed to disappear.

And then we are pretty much guaranteed WWIII. I am so angry the democrats didn’t find another candidate and angry with Biden for not stepping down. Trump will be an utter disaster for the world, not just America. Why hasn’t Biden retired? When he’s on top form he’s great but he’s clearly struggling. He’s the safest option though because he will have a team of good people around him advising him. Trump will only have sycophants.

Wasn't Trump the least warry POTUS for some time? (Measured in terms of wars started and bombs dropped?) He also made an attempt at reproachment with Russia, if he had won a second term there might not be war in Ukraine.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/06/2024 08:36

vs someone who should be in a care home. A care home isn't a repository for older people to hide them from your sight. Biden may no longer be capable of presidency but there's no evidence that he can't either cope or be cared for in the community.

Notonthestairs · 28/06/2024 08:38

Not "warry" - in the sense not getting involved so Ukraine would have fallen.

Whats next, China invades Taiwan...

"Much of the world's electronics - from phones to electric cars - are powered by computer chips made in Taiwan. By one measure, a single Taiwanese company - the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC - has over half of the world's market.
So if China takes the island, it could be freer to project power in the western Pacific and rival the US. Beijing would also have control over an industry that drive the global economy."

I don't think there's any weird forces, I just think that if you don't look after something, it deteriorates. Whether that's a house plant, your car or....democracy.

We all of us have taken democracy for granted too long and forgotten how special and unusual it is, so it's degraded.

I suppose there are 'forces' like China which I absolutely believe uses Tik Tok to enforce mental illness and vulnerability in our youth. And I am sure there are state actors messing with social media in general, to turn us against each other and make us divided and angry, which they have succeeded in doing.

But the best efforts of rival empires would fail if we had curated and cared for our democracies properly, which we haven't.

So it's mostly our fault. Mostly my generation and the one above me, not millennials and gen z.

There is solid evidence of Russia using social media to stoke division and instability in the UK and they interfered with the last election. I have no doubt China and Russia both use technology to try to destabilise the UK and most likely other countries.

It was sad to see Biden looking so incoherent and obviously unwell. I might be judging him unfairly, and I might be wrong, but he looks like he has dementia. He couldn't string a sentence together clearly.

Apparently he has a cold. You can hear that in his voice.

I'm sure, at his age, it would be difficult to respond quickly in a televised debate environment like this. I personally don't think he has dementia - I do believe these claims are made too easily - but he is showing his age. A younger President would be better, as long as it wasn't Trump.

TheAlchemistElixa · 28/06/2024 08:41

DanielGault · 28/06/2024 07:47

Why is she so unpopular that they prefer Biden? I have nothing against him but he looked out of it in that debate. If you can't pull off a debate, how can you run a country?

Sadly it’s largely because she’s a woman and because she’s black. One or the other MAYBE America could just about stomach, but both together are just too much for them. Plus she’s not exactly political dynamite. It’s all too awful to really comprehend.

AhNowTed · 28/06/2024 08:43

I watched it live and there's no sugar-coating how truly awful it was.

So bad that even Trump didn't make capital out of it.

Trump lied his way through 90 minutes but Biden was... shocking.

One can blame the format, the scandalous lack of fact checking, the lack of actual debate. But there's no getting away from it.

YankTank · 28/06/2024 08:43

Because Trump would’ve likely backed his despot hero, Putin. There would be no war in Ukraine right now because there would be no Ukraine. Trump publicly said he believes Putin over his own CIA.

No comment here that Trump told lies repeatedly throughout?

Just "Biden is old"

FFS

But the thread is about Biden!

Superblyput · 28/06/2024 08:52

I just don’t believe this. Michelle Obama was hugely popular and I think the democrats would be delighted if she was their presidential candidate.

Michelle Obama had a good broad appeal, was a natural speaker and communicator, whereas Kamala is more divisive and only appeals to a narrow subsection of voters.

TheDarkMonarch · 28/06/2024 08:54

God damn the Democrats for not using the last 4 years to get themsleves a stronger candidate. Biden's age was a factor in 2020 and it was sheer denial to think it was not going to be an even bigger factor now. What the hell would he be like in another four years?

They spent all their efforts on the charges, thinking the legal stuff would stop Trump but he no more cares for the law than he does for morality. He lied his arse off all through the debate but that won't matter because no one challenged him on it - no moderator and Biden not up to it.

The Kamala theory was touted last time also (that 'the plan' was for Biden to step down and leave her to it mid term). I think it's just comfort words to be honest.

I don't know whether Trump will want war. What I do know is that we've seen him willing to break democracy to stay in power. Last time he failed - which to me only tells him he needs to go further this time to succeed. I don't have a crystal ball but I think America (and the world) will be closer under a 2nd Trump term to losing democracy and freedoms, than it has been for several decades.

TheNoonBell · 28/06/2024 08:54

Biden's handlers should be ashamed, that was elderly abuse.

  1. Michelle said she would never do politics.
  2. Lots of Americans hate Michelle. Fiercely. She’s black, a woman, and is married to the first black president. Unforgivable. The hate is strong.

There'll be a mechanism but first things first they have to face the reality it needs to happen. They seem to be in denial at the moment and wasting precious time. I'd have thought Kamala Harris is the only option at this stage. She needs to start getting out there.

The Democrats aren't very keen on reality though. So I doubt this will be any exception.

It's ridiculous - I'm angry at both the democrats AND the republicans for not putting up better candidates. Just plucking a couple of people off the street would be better than this. It's suggests US 'democracy' is utterly corrupt and very very far removed from the original intentions.

This appears to be a MN thing right now.

If you mention something that is a counter point to anything on the thread, then you can only discuss the theme of the thread specifically.

Doesn't matter what's in the OP.

Offer relevant information in counter, and no, only the exact topic of the thread can be discussed.

I think at the start, even a year ago, Biden was stronger and more physically fit and it would’ve been with reluctance that his advisers agreed that he was the only Presidential contender that could win.

What I’m angry about is that the WH should have been grooming a replacement right from 2021. Give a possible rising star a highly visible appointment and create a positive narrative around them. Like Pete Buttigieg?

Thisoldheartofmine · 28/06/2024 08:18

@Zanatdy he's not only mumbling . Have you watched any of it ?
This
thlle national debt.
“We'd be able to wipe out” debt accumulated during Trump’s presidency, Biden said while speaking about his tax plans, before trailing off: “Making sure that we're able to make every single solitary person . . . eligible for what I've been able to do with the uh, with the COVID, excuse me, with um dealing with everything we have to do with uh. Look, if we finally beat Medicare.”
Doesn't sound too bad when you read it
But when you see or hear it , shocking

That sort of rambling has been standard from Trump since day one of his first candidacy too. What a mess.

HerbalRefreshmentt · 28/06/2024 09:01

Im American and I voted for Biden in 2020 thinking he would do the right thing, be a one term care taker President in order for the Democrats to get someone younger, more vibrant to the front and clean up some of the Trump mess of the prior four years. I am NOT a fan of him running again, I am NOT a fan of Kamala Harris, and honestly this whole election is a mess. I absentee vote in a swing state too - Ill vote for Biden again if I must but this is really not helping.

Perhaps an open convention, Biden stepping down, and someone new stepping in with four months to go would be enough to shake up the election as a whole. It would throw Trump off his game plan and get the right person in (and I dont mean Newsome or Harris from 'Commiefornia' its gotta be from the Midwest) and maybe that would be enough to start to sway the 10% undecideds in the middle and perhaps move some Republicans not on the MAGA train over too. I know critics say there is no consensus Dem candidate but cmon, are you REALLY going to not hold your nose and vote D whomever they come up with? At this election? I don't think so. It would quickly become the consensus candidate at any rate.

Unfortunately for the Democrats Kamala Harris isn't very popular with voters so I suspect that's why she's not being wheeled out.

its a ridiculous situation
A criminal megalomaniac vs someone who should be in a care home.
Come on America, you can do better.

I suppose they are only the front men, the mouthpiece. Who is pulling the strings? But i agree, its terrible.

ohfook · 28/06/2024 09:03

I think this illustrates perfectly why the fact you need a huge amount of financial backing to run for president is such a problem for the US. I refuse to believe that in a country with a population of 300 million that this is the best of the bunch - they're not the smartest, most innovative, or anything else; they just have money or access to it. Such an amazing country deserves better than those two corrupt muppets.
