Biden Trump debate- they must get rid of Biden now?

Biden looked so frail and incoherant at times that this must be the end of his Presidency very soon.
How have the Democrats not faced this sooner and selected someone else, I don't understand why they have let this go on for so long.
He had to be helped off the stage by his wife and it seems like elder abuse.

Michelle Obama is a remarkable woman and I think she would make an excellent politician - but she isn't a politician and has no real relevant experience for the job. Part of the reason she's so popular is that she's never had to stand in front of a group of people and explain to them that she isn't funding their cause because she finds another more deserving. She's never had to publicly make the tough calls. She's capable of it, don't get me wrong, but she has chosen not to put herself in that position and who can blame her.

Barack was lightning in a bottle - a politician with enough intelligence and dignity to take the job seriously but also enough charisma to win over the crowds like that! We only need to look at our own election to see how hard it is to find a personality like that. And he was Black! But the Right Kind Of Black who grew up with a white family - other Black politicians will have a much harder time in such a racist electorate.

Michelle isn't the answer, but it's horrific that among all their congressmen, senators and governors the Democrats can't find a better prospect to take on Trump.

But haven't we got our own dilemma next week? Rock and hard place I think.
We've had 25 years of labour in Wales who have done absolutely nothing for the country - but at the same time we've had the conservatives for God knows how long who have done very little for the UK - I have no idea who to vote for

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 30/06/2024 21:37

@CelesteCunningham that actually sounds like what she was doing when she worked in administration at a Chicago hospital. Not a global stage of course.

Dontevenlookatme · 30/06/2024 21:54

My DF’s Parkinson’s manifested itself just like this. The debate took place in the evening when Biden might have been sundowning. His very quiet speech, tailing off at the end of a sentence, starting coherently but losing his thread and petering out into silence, all very recognisable Parkinson traits.

The following day he addressed a rally where he was absolutely present, coherent, audible and articulate. Again, very recognisable.

The question American voters have to ask is whether they would prefer a President with failing health who makes sense most of the time but will need a good support system, or one who shouts and blusters but makes no sense at all.

That's not enough to take on the presidency, nowhere near enough. I think she'd be more than capable if she wanted it, but she'd need to do a Hillary and do some time in the house or in the cabinet.

TempestTost · 30/06/2024 22:32

In terms of a black female candidate for president, I think someone like Condoleeza Rice is much more plausible than someone like Harris - she's experienced in politics at a high level, is well respected, good name recognition, and very capable. Not a Democrat though. But I don't think she's got any interest in the job in any case.

Sugartreemumma · 30/06/2024 23:05

Surely Trump's main appeal to his backers is that he is a useful idiot?

Sugartreemumma · 01/07/2024 12:34

Trump will turn the USA into North Korea. One rich fat man ruling over a nation of impoverished half starved citizens too weak to overthrow him.
If he gets in his first priority will be to make sure he can never be voted out again.

Indeed. Trump has said openly that he'll "only be a dictator on day one"

One day is all a dictator needs, to take executive powers and transform government. There is a well-oiled MAGA war machine ready to do this.

Yes, he can be replaced at the Democratic Convention in August. I don't know what happened to Kamala. She's made public speaking gaffes and is largely absent in the media.

Trump can still blow it with his choice for VP. It'll be a tough call. He doesn't want a moderate, another Pence, or an extremist kook like Marjorie Taylor Green to turn off moderates and the undecided. Hoping and praying he picks someone loyal but loco en la cabeza.

Edited

Considering what happened with Mike Pence during the Jan 6 debacle, I wonder who would be mad enough to want to be Trump's VP.

Nonsense. You are hugely overestimating the power the president has.

Anyone who is dumb enough and/or mad enough would presumably not have enough credibility to attract voters? So it does (hopefully) look like a catch 22 for him 🤷🏼‍♀️

Trump's second reign will be same as the first. The government running things largely as usual with a President who spends his time spouting bullshit on Twitter.

I think you might be wrong on this. He's not going to let things slip through his fingers again. He's in it for the long haul and will force through the changes necessary to facilitate this.

TempestTost · 01/07/2024 21:35

I think it would be much, much easier for Trump to let go at the end of a second term, because it wouldn't be an election loss. So no loss of face.

Wideskye · 01/07/2024 21:48

I think they should get rid of bot of them.

Not true. Overestimating the power the president currently has, not overestimating the power a president could have if he does away with the checks and balances and replaces competent government workers with incompetent yes men, both part of Trump's plan. And now it looks like he also can't be held accountable for his crimes in office so there goes any opposition...

Biden should use the supreme court's verdict today to get rid of trump. He's a threat to democracy, a strike team could easily fix all of this.

are you kidding??

Biden certainly would not just be a threat to democracy if he did that, he would have killed democracy.

No not at all.

I don't think he's really much like a traditional dictator in his character. People compare him to PUtin, I think that's a real misunderstanding of what kind of person he is and his interests.

Whatever we could say about Putin's moral character, his motivations is very much political control, he has specific policy and goals he wants, and he is very hard working.

I don't think Trump has much interest in politics really, and he's not especially a hard worker, or driven. I don't think he particularly enjoys the work of being president.

The biggest issue with losing the election for him was about his ego. And if he reached the end of his term limit, that wouldn't have any implications for his ego.

I'm guessing you don't realise what Trump will be able to do with this ruling in his second term.

"A dictator on day one"

Is damned right.

They should have let the independent candidate Robert f Kennedy join the debate
