They're a populist group.
Some people think they have the answers.
So much of Europe is moving to the right and that worries me.

ExtraOnions · 08/06/2024 17:24

Funny how across Europe “facist” and “far right” has now been replaced by “populist” . It’s like people don’t want to call them what they are.

Seen 2 videos today, from the town down the road .. In one a Reform candidate was saying that he decided to stand after he saw the number of foreign people at the airport (for foreign read “non white”), it was pointed out that many of these people were tourists or British people coming fro abroad .. to which he had no answer.

The second was an “I’m not racist but” woman, who claimed where people were in the minority in the UK (interviews pointed out were are 80% white (no answer), that Muslims don’t doesn’t English )interviewer pointed out that most British Muslims speak English) .. she liked some Muslims though, the “one that cooks” apparently

unfortunately bigots like this feel embolden, with the likes of Farage on the TV … it’s old fashioned Racism - they don’t want brown or black people living here (especially Muslims)… none of them are fussed about white immigration.

Had a good talk with my DD about it, she’ll be voting for the first time this year, about how our family are immigrants (moved to England in the 1920s), we were economic migrants, and fleeing from religion based persecution .. however, because we are white, nobody cares.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/06/2024 17:25

Not a chance.

IsoldeWagner · 08/06/2024 17:26

Unfortunately, they're getting a lot of support.
Seeing the popularity of similar parties in Europe is very worrying though.
"Populist" is a correct term, however.

Why are you scared, hun?

Do you need a lie down?

beergiggles · 08/06/2024 17:30

Popular with people who lack critical thinking skills, I dont think they'll last & Farage is a joke.

Yes 😂 they country is in a right shit state, and for people to think that racist prick has the answers is worrying. But probably nothing for you to worry about.

It’s the Facist playbook … find another group to blame for the failures in your life (but whatever you do, don’t look up).

Cadela · 08/06/2024 17:34

Reform won’t get a single seat. Thankfully the nutters that vote for them aren’t compos mentis enough to garner support. They’ll just sit in their living rooms shouting about brown people taking their jobs and getting gifted free mansions by Keir 😂

Caravaggiouch · 08/06/2024 17:36

They might get one seat if Nigel Farage finally gets in. They’re mainly taking votes off the Conservatives. So if you’re scared of a large Labour majority by all means be scared of them.

neverbeenskiing · 08/06/2024 17:40

The rise of the far-right in Europe is troubling and I find Reform abbhorent, but if you look at our current Government's own foreign policy it is just as concerning.

I'm not worried. Who's the racist prick btw?

justasking111 · 08/06/2024 17:46

In the UK it's a protest vote against labour and conservatives. As a nation we're not those kind of extremists, but we're pissed off in Scotland, Wales and England for myriad reasons.

Abroad, I'm not so sure about. We were talking to a lecturer friend this afternoon who's had cause to take one of his students aside, white European, whose racism is particularly offensive to other students.

IsoldeWagner · 08/06/2024 17:48

We know about the right having success in Hungary, Poland and Austria, but they're gaining in Sweden too.

Laiste · 08/06/2024 17:50

There's always an extreme party one way or the other, coming out of the woodwork at election time stirring up the nutters. They won't get in.

The nutters won't be bothered to get off their arses on the day and get down to the polling centres, apart from anything else. They tend to just like to sit about at home waving their arms about and shouting the odds.

Take your pick from the Reform candidates......

BitOutOfPractice · 08/06/2024 17:51

I think the best thing that could happen is Farage wins the only Reform seat and has to spend the next 5 years in Clacton. Careful what you wish for Nigel.

seriously though, who the fuck is voting for these low lifes?

TheThingIsYeah · 08/06/2024 17:51

IsoldeWagner · 08/06/2024 17:48

Sweden doesn't surprise me. Sounds like it's right disaster over there, well Malmö at least. Naivety will bite you on the arse.

DojaPhat · 08/06/2024 17:52

I wonder if the so-called shy tories have anything in common with the reformists.

lavenderlou · 08/06/2024 17:52

They're unexpectedly not fielding a candidate in my constituency which is a shame as they would have done quite well and taken lots of votes from the Tories which might have handed the seat to Labour. Now the Tories will undoubtedly win again....

craigth162 · 08/06/2024 17:53

Worrying to me is the fact that what was once seen as right wing is now standard and what was once extreme right wing is now acceptable. We are moving in a scary direction. All it takes is gradual movement for us to end up in a fascist state. A world with a possibility of Trump and Farage in power is truly terrifying

BESTAUNTB · 08/06/2024 17:53

I reckon they’ll get around 18% of the vote share overall in England and that they’ll take the Clacton seat.

I don’t think that the Scottish and the Welsh will give them that many votes though.

People refer to Farage as a clown. He is not. He’s masterful at PR, bright, and pretty articulate.

For context I’ll be a Labour voter on 4th July and I have been one since 1997. The only two policies of Reform’s I like is the £20k Personal Allowance (because imo that would mostly benefit people on small pensions, and the working poor) and cancelling the interest on student debt.

TheThingIsYeah · 08/06/2024 17:54

craigth162 · 08/06/2024 17:50

Again, who's the racists?

AmpleFatball · 08/06/2024 17:55

It is nuts to me that people are taken in by him, still. He obviously played a huge role in Brexit and it’s made everyone poorer.

Reform still doesn’t have a realistic policy for dealing with illegal immigration (Farage admitted that the policies in their manifesto are unworkable and unrealistic) and that’s an issue that’s supposedly core to their platform.

Also love to know how Reform could deliver on cutting taxes while increasing public spending…and how they’ll keep a state pension when cutting immigration to net zero.

Farage is very good at appealing to some of the politically disengaged by voicing their complaints. What he and Reform are very bad at (presumably, because they have no need or interest in doing so) is offering realistic solutions.

The epitome of a snake oil salesman.
