Again, who's the racists?

Farage for one...feel free to google all the many racist comments he has made.

Worrying to me is the fact that what was once seen as right wing is now standard and what was once extreme right wing is now acceptable. We are moving in a scary direction. All it takes is gradual movement for us to end up in a fascist state. A world with a possibility of Trump and Farage in power is truly terrifying

The Tories have won the last 3 elections outright. They are not even remotely right wing. What's worrying is that the definition of right wing has been completely lost. Probably not surprising given the Tories have had 14 years exclusively under the scrutiny of purple haired loons on Twitter.

In 3 weeks time it will be Starmer's turn to deal with the cesspit that is social media. Poor chap, he's going to have his work cut out if we're not all millionaires this time next year.

Part of the problem is that anyone who tries to discuss immigration, especially when saying it’s not working and supports a reduction of immigration numbers, is called a racist, a bigot or far right. This will just push people towards parties like reform.

We need to be able to debate immigration - ultimately there is a level of immigration that we cannot as a country currently afford. Equally we need a level of migration for a strong economy. We need to stop illegal immigration and the boats but have a quick and fair asylum process.

How we fix it I don’t know. But it’s through open discussion, debate and disagreement that we’ll come up with solutions rather than name calling and creating echo chambers of opinion.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/06/2024 18:08

Farage himself and Reform’s entire platform is racist. Their entire schtick is based on blaming every single problem in the UK on immigrants. Housing. NHS queues. Whatever. In particular they target muslims.

You could stop immigration completely tomorrow and all of the problems would still exist. The cause of all these problems is in fact capitalism.

Voice of reason. Dear lord, that has no place on MN.

All racists will be anti-immigration, but that does not mean that everyone who is anti-immigration is a racist.

As you point out, the real issue is the giant ponzi scheme that is capitalism and both globalism and immigration definitely serve that particular master, but that doesn't mean that it is wrong to say that mass immigration is not a problem in and of itself.

Yep i read on a Reform candidate for scotland that we are 'full' and yet many many areas of scotland are in desperate need of staff. Skilled and unskilled. There is nowhere near enough affordable housing but that is not due to immigrants.

What kind of staff though? Mostly the cheap and unskilled kind who employers aren't prepared to pay a decent wage to I would imagine.

Why are you scared, hun?

Do you need a lie down?

Are you going to vote for them then?

What is there to be scared about? Populism, fascism, racism - we've seen it all before, it did not end well.

1 in 6 people in England & Wales weren't born here.

Do you seriously think that adding that many people in a short space of time (7m in the last 20 years alone) doesn't have an effect on things like demand for housing/hospital beds, GP/dentist appointments?

Same for most of the UK. Problems with NHS, lack of school places, housing, police, not due to immigrants, but to cuts and austerity.

OldTinHat · 08/06/2024 18:19

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and the right to vote.

Rest assured that I won't be voting Tory, Labour or Lib Dem. That doesn't mean you can call me names, belittle me or imply I am of low intelligence.

I have a choice, as do you. Every vote counts. So vote and be counted and let your voice be heard.

1 in 6 is nothing. In Switzerland, 40% of the population has a migrant background (1st or 2nd gen).

That country has efficient public services, high salaries, mindblowing public transport, excellent healthcare. And it’s smaller and more densely populated than the UK.

How do they do it ?

They might get one seat if Nigel Farage finally gets in. They’re mainly taking votes off the Conservatives. So if you’re scared of a large Labour majority by all means be scared of them.

Edited

To be honest I am scared of a large Labour majority, although the idea of Tories not being the opposition party is great.

I hate Reform too and right wing politics, but I don't like what Keir Starmer is doing to the Labour Party either, with him kicking out a lot of people who don't have completely identical views to him. That is a red flag for me, and I'm a bit scared of a large majority due to that.

Unfortunately we live in a very unfair society. Globally, very wealthy people have gotten much more wealthier at the expense of the average person, and this breeds resentment and everyone blaming each other. As a pp has said, we need to look up, but when you do, you get accused of being a nut job, which is very convenient for those very wealthy people!

I don't see much changing when Labour get in, but I will be glad the Tories will have been thrown off the gravy train. Apparently some of the MPs were pissed off the election was in July because they have debts to pay off. 😂😂

Soukmyfalafel · 08/06/2024 18:32

@CoatRack a lot of these people will be plugging the gaps because we have skills shortages in this country. Lots of building work going on near me, mostly Romanian workers. Either the employer is taking them because the labour is cheap, or they can't find the skilled workers here from British citizens. Either way, Tories have failed to deal with that adequately, and they haven't kept up with the demand of an increasing population either.

If the population is growing, you need more housing and services. They didn't keep up with demand.

I feel like when it comes to voting a lot of us including me will be ruling out who we dont wsnt then seeing whos left rather than actually supporting and wanting one party. There are 8 candidates in my area

Tory - no
Labour - no
Reform - no
Snp - not too keen
Alba - not too keen
Lib dem - maybe
Independent- not much point
Green - not too keen

I can think of a few reasons:

They don't have an NHS to pay for
More Germans
Smaller benefits system

The native population has had a sub-replacement birth rate since the 70s.

If houses need building, then it's to house the migrants who are here to build houses for the migrants.

I wish the people who think Farage is wonderful would spend a bit of time reflecting on the fact that he didn't mention Brexit during the debate last night. Weird that. Defined his life's ambition but he doesn't try to leverage it. I wonder why....?

Popular with people who lack critical thinking skills, I dont think they'll last & Farage is a joke.

I think people who believe the mainstream media propaganda are the ones that lack critical thinking. Not the contrarians.

Fascism is when people aren’t allowed an opinion different than the officially approved ones.

I don’t think this sort of thing is coming from Farage’s camp, whatever you think of him.

AnthuriumCrystallinum · 08/06/2024 19:02

When did they get so American?

There are two references to Christian values in their manifesto - Christian not British - and the front page of their website is asking people to "make Britain great again".

Tell me if I’m wrong but I don’t understand the negative connotation of the word “populist” shouldn’t that just mean the most popular/ voted for party- ( not specifically reform- just any party named it) so it’s just democracy in action, not bad?! . Really confused why right wing parties get called populist, reform won’t even get in power. Surely the most populist parties are the ones in government no?! Or does the dictionary say something different?! Genuinely curious, can anyone help me out here?

AmpleFatball · 08/06/2024 19:03

If houses need building, then it's to house the migrants who are here to build houses for the migrants.

Which immigrants are needed in order to pay for, among other things, the state pension (because you can’t realistically have a meaningful state pension with a growing retired population and a shrinking workforce).

If we want to stop relying on immigration, we need to significantly boost domestic birth rates - then we could wean ourselves off reliance on immigration in a decade or two.

I’d assume that the first thing we’d need to do is re-jig our economy in such a way that families could go back to living relatively comfortably off a single income, rather than scraping by on two. I’m not a Reform voter but I’d be fine with ceasing our immigration dependence by giving working people a much improved standard of living.

What I’m not prepared to do is have working people pay hugely increased NI contributions, which will continue to rise over time, in order to fund a Net Zero immigration policy.

Racism is not an 'opinion'.
