M&S for everyone else... Primark for DIL

IrisVonEverec · 26/12/2023 19:25

Can't help but feel there is a message in the pjs handed out by MIL this Christmas.

The primark ones weren't even character based/specially chosen/christmassy. They're just grey all over. And there's no excuses for "don't really know her" as we've been together 20 years.

Meh.

All made by similar people in similar places with similar fabrics.

I don’t see a problem.

Gymnopedie · 26/12/2023 19:27

What's your relationship like normally? It would seem odd if this has come out of nowhere. But yes, definitely a message in there. What has DH said about it?

ChateauDuMont · 26/12/2023 19:28

Maybe they didn't have your size so she had to source similar from elsewhere?

How did you know all the others were a different brand?

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 26/12/2023 19:28

Hmmmm. Does seem off. Unless your size is unavailable in m&s?

HappyHamsters · 26/12/2023 19:29

Don't fret about it, m&s aren't that great and they might be comfortable to wear around the house.

blondieminx · 26/12/2023 19:31

Well, she sounds a cowbag.

she’d be getting a primark voucher for her birthday mwahaha!

rise above her attempts to upset you.

Fancycheese · 26/12/2023 19:31

i bought M&S pjs this year that were worse quality than Primark, I wouldn’t worry unless there are other issues in your relationship.

IrisVonEverec · 26/12/2023 19:32

No issues with the size - I'm a not unsual, common size and have been the same size for ever.

I know everyone else got M&S because the "everyone" is dh and our kids.

I think the plain grey that has annoyed me more than the brand!

I've not had a falling out, just get the impression I'm not liked due to silly little things like this.

Catandsquirrel · 26/12/2023 19:32

M&s are a bit pricier but they could have been out of your size and MIL went to the nearest other shop and hoped you wouldn't notice. They're ballpark in terms of value, not like the others got handmade monogrammed silk. What's she like normally? I'd have preferred plain ones to wear again than character pjs anyway.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 26/12/2023 19:32

Well I would not be impressed with MIL buying everyone PJs anyway - just buy me chocolate. Or a gift voucher for the coffee shop.

Just give ask her to give you receipt as they don’t fit/ suit/ you want to buy something you like.

It does seem like a slight though.

Kpo58 · 26/12/2023 19:33

I think that I'd be more insulted by the pjs being grey than the shop that they are from. That means they couldn't even be bothered to think of getting you something nice to wear, but went for a dingy non colour that was boring to look at.

Zanatdy · 26/12/2023 19:34

Well my DD’s PJ’s were more expensive from primark than the ones I got my mum. Some of their PJ’s aren’t that expensive really and I’ve noticed primark costs gone up lately

Mermaidinmymind · 26/12/2023 19:37

I don't see the problem these pyjamas would have made me happy. She's made the effort that's what counts

Poppyseed14 · 26/12/2023 19:38

Bit cunty of her OP 😔

Scrantonicity2 · 26/12/2023 19:39

Do you usually judge your relationship with someone based on what shop they bought a gift in, rather than the actual relationship?

DM used to buy my DH PJs from Primark. Never occurred to me it was a Secret Message About Her True Feelings.

Brefugee · 26/12/2023 19:40

love how everyone pretends to completely miss the point.

OP tell MIL that they don't fit and you'll donate them. Get your DH to tell her that in future you'd all much prefer a game or chocolate or something.

Catandsquirrel · 26/12/2023 19:40

Trouble with your popular sizes is they sell like hotcakes at busy times so I'd be inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt if all is usually fine.

Half the country will have got pyjamas for Christmas so maybe she just left it a bit late and was stuck for suitable ones for you ('god I can't give her them, they're a bit sexy! She'll think I'm telling her to join a convent in those fleece ones. Bugger it. Parking is running out. I'll get these for the kids then see what primark have got just so nobody's left out')

As a one off I'd just forget it.

JeopardyMoose · 26/12/2023 19:41

Does she have form for similar actions previously?

festivepains · 26/12/2023 19:42

Maybe she felt uncomfortable buying a grown ass woman pjs and thought you probably already had it covered but didn't want you to feel left out so went with something cheap in case you hated the idea and never wore them.

WaitingfortheTardis · 26/12/2023 19:42

Primark pyjamas are far better than M&S ones now, I think you got lucky!

QueenOfMOHO · 26/12/2023 19:42

In all honesty I think some Primark PJ's are better than the MandS ones.

SpeedyDrama · 26/12/2023 19:42

Ah MN at it’s finest

OP - ‘Bit off I get a cheaper brand than everyone else isn’t it?’

Mumsnet - ‘is it ‘cos you’re fat?’

I would find it a bit passive aggressive as well op, but I’d also rather Primani over granny frumpy M and S pjs in all honesty…

DragonFly98 · 26/12/2023 19:42

What's wrong with pale grey the Primark grey pjs with the trim are lovely and not cheap.

festivepains · 26/12/2023 19:43

We're everyone else's zany and cool? She might have thought you were classier than that

Candycurrantbun · 26/12/2023 19:44

I don't see the problem. There's nothing wrong with Primark PJs. In fact I prefer them to M & S.
