Unequal grandparent gifts

I have an only child. My siblings have 2-3 kids a piece. Just found out my parents set a £30 budget for my child’s present and bought £300 pianos as a ‘shared gift’ for each set of gc for each sibling. I asked why my son didn’t also get a piano (or even a larger budget equal to a proportion of the others) when he’s the only one of their 6 gc actually learning the piano and was told I was ungrateful.

I’m so, so pissed off. Bear in mind I’m hosting christmas as I’ve done for years. Aibu to kick them all out and call it a day?

Is there a back story?

What do you think of their response?

WandaWonder · 25/12/2023 10:53

So, you're hosting so your child should get more?

Lifeasiknowitisout · 25/12/2023 10:54

Did you ask for a piano?

Did the others? Did your ds?

Did your ds get what you/he asked for?

Don't be ridiculous, her child should surely get equal to their cousins though?

PuttingDownRoots · 25/12/2023 10:56

Honestly... this is one of those laugh or cry things and laughing is better for you.

Don't let their negativity ruin your day and laugh at the irony of buying something for five kids that only the sixth would appreciate

NightisdarkandfullofterrorsGOT · 25/12/2023 10:56

They’re hosting which makes it even more of a kick in the teeth their kid is treated badly compared to cousins.

WandaWonder · 25/12/2023 10:53

Yes. I spend £500 hosting 15 people every fucking year. Of course my child should get more

Use that 5oo for a hotel next yr op. One with a grand piano

Seadreamers · 25/12/2023 10:59

That all sounds very odd. Do they see much of your DC vs their other DGC? Not that that is any excuse.

If all the DGC are old enough to know the value of things then way to go for making the child with a huge gift value discrepancy make them wonder why.

If you don’t want to host, don’t. It definitely does not mean that your child should get more. Although I am not sure why there is a budget of £30 for your child and £100 per child for the others. It should be about the same per child, not per household.

Shouldn’t you be busy peeling sprouts now?

Make it clear that you won't be hosting in future.

Explain it will be more christmassy to go to a house with a piano, so the family can gather around it and sing together.

Unfortunately, you don't have a piano so that rules your house out 🤷‍♀️

Thesearmsofmine · 25/12/2023 11:00

I’m a veteran of the unequal gifts and treatment from grandparents. It’s shit OP and hurtful but now my kids are getting older they see it themselves and their grandparents miss out on the lovely relationship they could be having with them. It’s their loss.

FourthToeOnTheRight · 25/12/2023 11:01

How old are all of the GC?

Thesearmsofmine · 25/12/2023 11:01

And don’t host next year.

Goinoutalone · 25/12/2023 11:02

Does your dc even play the piano??

FourthToeOnTheRight · 25/12/2023 11:02

And I agree, don’t host next year!

Why do you host every year? Do you have the largest house?

Shitty behaviour re unequal gifts regardless.

I don’t think your child should get more because you’re hosting.

Why are you hosting every year though? Do you particularly want to? If not, let this be the last year.

FourthToeOnTheRight · 25/12/2023 11:03

Goinoutalone · 25/12/2023 11:02

Does your dc even play the piano??

OP has stated her DC is the only one having piano lessons!

Testina · 25/12/2023 11:04

@Ju1ieAndrews “Explain it will be more christmassy to go to a house with a piano, so the family can gather around it and sing together.”

oooooh that’s clever! I like it 👍🏻

I don’t think you have to spend the same on each grandchild to the penny - but that’s quite a difference.

However, did your child get something they like for £30 whilst their cousins got a share of a piano that they don’t want? It’s not a good present really, if you don’t want one.

JustAMinutePleass · 25/12/2023 10:57

Yes. I spend £500 hosting 15 people every fucking year. Of course my child should get more

so you have 15 people over?

and £500 for 15? bloody well that’s incredibly impressive e you manage 15 for £500!!!

Soontobe60 · 25/12/2023 11:04

FourthToeOnTheRight · 25/12/2023 11:03

OP has stated her DC is the only one having piano lessons!

Presumably he’s already got a piano then?

Goinoutalone · 25/12/2023 11:05

@FourthToeOnTheRight ah I totally misread that for some reason..

It's in the OP
