To think this shouldn't result in a prison sentence

I've read that idiot who showed the picture of that poor little boy at the football match is facing jail. Showing that picture was incredibly cruel, nasty, spiteful and many other things. That poor boy suffered with cancer and his family lost him so young.
However I do not believe this man should go to jail for showing the image. He rightfully deserves to be named and shamed, cautioned, possibly banned from future matches. But I don't understand why he should be going to prison over it.

Freedom of expression doesn't mean freedom from consequences. If we did this more often, maybe it would help lower the amount of hurtful trolls out there.

Codie22345 · 02/10/2023 18:21

I'm not saying he should have had freedom of expression. He deserves a punishment 100%. However prison seems incredibly extreme.

As a deterrent, He's been made an example of . It was a hateful evil thing to do. Hopefully no one else will dare to do anything like this ever again .

jeaux90 · 02/10/2023 18:23

He hasn't been sentenced yet. It was a public order offence and he was off his head on drugs. Disgraceful man.

Saker · 02/10/2023 18:23

I agree with you OP, it would be more productive to make him do community service for a hospice or similar. Sending people to prison rarely achieves anything.

dayofcheese · 02/10/2023 18:23

Because he was in a football ground trying to stir up trouble

Codie22345 · 02/10/2023 18:24

Yes exactly, certainly a fine or some form of community service. Banned from future games. A custodial sentence is ridiculous.

Well seeing as they frequently let men off for beating partners black and blue with a "suspended sentence" I doubt this guy will see jail time.

AuntMarch · 02/10/2023 18:25

Can't say I see it a good use of money. Community service would be more sensible I think. Something that might actually install a bit of empathy perhaps.

BoohooWoohoo · 02/10/2023 18:26

How much jail time does that offence carry?

LorraineBainMcFly · 02/10/2023 18:28

What did he do? Am assuming more than showing a picture?

Codie22345 · 02/10/2023 18:28

Im not sure exactly what the sentence would be, and he possibly did more which would explain things.

I’m amazed he didn’t say he was showing the picture as a “tribute” and it was meant as a positive thing, not a negative thing in an attempt to get off with it. Have I missed something, did he just hold his phone up with a picture?

I mean, I’m sure he did mean it badly so have no sympathy for him….just surprised he pleaded guilty.

AreYouShittingMe · 02/10/2023 18:31

I agree @Codie22345. Not a custodial sentence. He needs to spend time in a children's hospice and listen to families who have lost loved ones to cancer, and to hear about what it feels like. He has a chance of learning something that way.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 02/10/2023 18:33

Is there a link to the story - tried googling but couldn't find it.

I wouldn't want him near any vulnerable adults.

Americano75 · 02/10/2023 18:35

I doubt he'll do time for it. He needs to lay off the coke and grow the fuck up.

LorraineBainMcFly · 02/10/2023 18:36

I've googled, the child passed away and a tribute was held at a Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday match and the idiot who's been arrested loudly, and publicly laughed and mocked.him.

Pugfin · 02/10/2023 18:36

It's a privilege to work in a hospice, he should never be allowed to step foot in one for a learning opportunity, such an ignorant suggestion. I doubt he will get anything that resembles a reasonable sentence, but having worked for many years with children and their families in palliative care I can't even describe how abhorrent this vile man off his head on coke is.

OhmygodDont · 02/10/2023 18:36

Yeah I don’t understand his possible prison sentence tbh. Yes what he did was shitty but since when is showing a photo of a now deceased child a crime?

But anyway since it’s a crime then community service.

LeafLife · 02/10/2023 18:37

There is too much turning of the other cheek with people who deliberately hurt and abuse others. I’m glad finally it seems we are starting to punish people who hurt others verbally, emotionally and visually in this case. I hope this is the start of what’s to come for people who behave this way. There is too much nastiness and spite in this world. The only way to curb it is with a deterrent.

IslaWinds · 02/10/2023 18:38

I wouldn’t want a coke addict with zero empathy doing community service other than emptying dog poo bins.

LorraineBainMcFly · 02/10/2023 18:38

So they held up a photo of him and laughed and took the piss. Absolute.arses

EvilElsa · 02/10/2023 18:38

He won't go to jail.
I wouldn't give a shit if did because he is clearly a massive cunt. But he won't. I'd be absolutely mortified if that was my son. I saw that his parents picked him up from the police station today and I couldn't help but think how utterly ashamed I'd be.
