To think this shouldn't result in a prison sentence

I've read that idiot who showed the picture of that poor little boy at the football match is facing jail. Showing that picture was incredibly cruel, nasty, spiteful and many other things. That poor boy suffered with cancer and his family lost him so young.
However I do not believe this man should go to jail for showing the image. He rightfully deserves to be named and shamed, cautioned, possibly banned from future matches. But I don't understand why he should be going to prison over it.

Tough if he goes to jail. He caused considerable distress to the family, not to mention others. If it deters anyone else then good. I have no sympathy

woodentrunk · 02/10/2023 18:40

I agree with you OP. He's been identified by the media, lost his job and will likely face a long an from football grounds. Incredibly stupid, hurtful and rotten thing to do but if we start locking people up every time they do vile, nasty things, we'd soon run out of prison space.

I agree @Codie22345. Not a custodial sentence. He needs to spend time in a children's hospice and listen to families who have lost loved ones to cancer, and to hear about what it feels like. He has a chance of learning something that way.

If he’s that much of a twat that he could do what he did, spending time in a children’s hospice would do nothing to change him. You can’t teach people empathy.

Is there a link to the story - tried googling but couldn't find it.

Google Bradley Lowery

JemimaTiggywinkles · 02/10/2023 18:41

They're obviously horrible people but I'm not sure that prison is going to solve that. Some people are just dicks.

We also need to be super careful about allowing "my feelings got hurt" to be enough to send another person to prison.

Saker · 02/10/2023 18:41

Pugfin · 02/10/2023 18:36

It's a privilege to work in a hospice, he should never be allowed to step foot in one for a learning opportunity, such an ignorant suggestion. I doubt he will get anything that resembles a reasonable sentence, but having worked for many years with children and their families in palliative care I can't even describe how abhorrent this vile man off his head on coke is.

I actually said do community service for a hospice, not work in one. I was thinking more of something like working for a charity raising money for a hospice for example.

joelmillersbackpack · 02/10/2023 18:41

I don’t really care if he goes to jail, as far as I’m concerned a lot of people should be in jail but aren’t.

He taunted the family of a dead child to provoke opposing fans in a stadium with a sensitive history. Being on drugs doesn’t excuse it.

DonnaBanana · 02/10/2023 18:41

This is a crime that goes beyond anything physical violence can do as it targeted thousands of fans at the match. This was laughing while showing a photo of a dead person. While I don’t support capital punishment usually clear cut cases like this where lots of people saw the crime took place in real time are a different matter imo

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/10/2023 18:42

He hasn't even gone to court yet so why are you hand wringing about him going to jail?

Trainplan · 02/10/2023 18:43

It was a terrible thing he did, but you're right the penalty would be far less if it wasn't at a football match.

Fwiw the response from other supporters at his club has been amazing - thousands of pounds collected in Bradley's memory by way of apology.

Why should these families and children bear the responsibility of educating this waste of space? Would you want him around your terminally ill child?

This X1000, it really is a privilege and this man should be nowhere near!

Thanks, found it now.

Being an utter knobber isn't a criminal offence, so I'm surprised at this.

Are you seriously suggesting he should be hung for this?

Nat6999 · 02/10/2023 18:47

He wasn't so brave when he scuttled out of court today. Sheffield Wednesday supporters named & shamed him at the weekend. He also lost his job because supporters told where he worked what he had done. He is banned from any football ground in the country.

Sirzy · 02/10/2023 18:47

Saker · 02/10/2023 18:23

I agree with you OP, it would be more productive to make him do community service for a hospice or similar. Sending people to prison rarely achieves anything.

If me or my relative was in a hospice I wouldn’t want someone like him being forced to be around.

LorraineBainMcFly · 02/10/2023 18:48

On fb someone from the Sheffield wed fan club he's in has told him it's not on and awful.
His response was Bradley 'didn't deserve special treatment' and that he 'doesn't care' about upsetting people, then a laughing emojie followed by a laughing selfie. I'm assuming used as evidence for his lack of remorse. Again what an arse!

DonnaBanana · 02/10/2023 18:48

Probably not in reality but that is for a judge to decide. If I were on the jury and it was an option I would go for it for this sort of crime though. So many people were hurt by his actions, it wasn’t just a one off thing

IncomingTraffic · 02/10/2023 18:48

Maybe he’s got a record the length of war and peace. Without all the relevant information how can anyone say what the appropriate sentence is here?

He was in court today and pled guilty.

christologymum · 02/10/2023 18:49

He lives on the next street to me, and the local Facebook pages have been going crazy. His family have been subject to abuse which is a bit unfair. His employer has also made a statement to say he will no longer be employed.

According to the media he has one previous offence which he was fined for. They didn't state what the offence was.

FlopsSake · 02/10/2023 18:50

Hes lost his job as well. Tbh, i dont think first offence should be jail term but if a repeat offender then yes. Its disgusting what he did. But the online public flogging should hopefully be enough to make him not do it again

minou123 · 02/10/2023 18:50

LorraineBainMcFly · 02/10/2023 18:28

What did he do? Am assuming more than showing a picture?

Essentially, that's what he did, but it's a little more nuanced than that.

The idiot is a Sheffield Wednesday fan and decided to goad and upset the Sunderland fans by holding up a picture of Bradley Lowery.
Bradley Lowery was a 6 year old who died of cancer and was hugely loved and embraced by Sunderland United before he died.

The potato brain, held up the photo on purpose to wind up the Sunderland fans.
He was arrested and charged under the Public Order offence for causing harrassement, alarm and distress.
He pled guilty.

Bradley's mum gave a victim impact statement.
The judge is clearly pissed off and will sentence him in November.

Personally,I don't think the judge will give him a prison sentence.
The tit has lost his job, been banned from football games and had his picture and life published all over the media.
I think the judge will probably fine him, give him a suspended sentence and maybe some sort of community service.
