To think this shouldn't result in a prison sentence

I've read that idiot who showed the picture of that poor little boy at the football match is facing jail. Showing that picture was incredibly cruel, nasty, spiteful and many other things. That poor boy suffered with cancer and his family lost him so young.
However I do not believe this man should go to jail for showing the image. He rightfully deserves to be named and shamed, cautioned, possibly banned from future matches. But I don't understand why he should be going to prison over it.

I agree with you OP, it would be more productive to make him do community service for a hospice or similar. Sending people to prison rarely achieves anything.

That's a huge insult to the good and decent people in the world who choose and dedicate their lives to working in a Hospice. I don't think some one who mocks a dead child should be within a billion miles of a Hospice

Bectoria2006 · 02/10/2023 20:36

I am torn as someone who has had a child go through cancer and thankfully survived.

Part of me thinks he absolutely does but then the other part says what difference will it really make to that family? They’ve already been through the worst thing they could ever experience. I think he absolutely needs punishing and to face consequences for his actions and I’m glad he’s been sacked and his name is out there but not sure on jail time.

Why on earth do you think he should be inflicted on a hospice? I certainly wouldn’t have wanted him near any of my patients.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/10/2023 20:39

I have no doubt that Bradley's Mum and Dad cry and ache for him everyday. However that will have brought all their pain back to the surface.
I highly doubt he'll get any Prison time though. There just isn't the room.
I think it'll be 18 months suspended for 2 years.

nettie434 · 02/10/2023 20:44

He hasn't actually been sentenced yet. The judge said that a custodial sentence was an option. Whatever the sentence, I expect it will be intended to be a deterent. There is too much 'tragedy chanting' and other offensive behaviour at football matches. None of us would mock a child who died at work and expect to get away with it. Why should being at a football match be treated differently?

I feel sorry for Bradley's parents. It was clear that all the support he received from rival fans as well as Sunderland fans was a comfort to them as bereaved parents. No wonder they are upset.

Ap24 · 02/10/2023 20:49

He's an absolute waste of space and I hope they make an example of him. I also hope that he is banned from football games for life. The more publicity around this the more it will ruin his life so even without prison time I agree with them charging him.

Cranberriesandtea · 02/10/2023 20:57

@Pugfin I completely agree. Who wants to be providing "a learning opportunity" for a disgusting druggie whilst their loved ones are dying.

I suspect a few of the footy lads will be giving him a “learning opportunity” when he’s out.

As I have already explained twice, I said do community service for a hospice, not work in one. You have to be qualified to work in a hospice anyway. I was thinking more of working for a charity to that raised money for a hospice or something similar that would be useful to them. But if that wasn't acceptable then some other type of community service could be chosen. Prison is not the only alternative.

This is a crime that goes beyond anything physical violence can do as it targeted thousands of fans at the match. This was laughing while showing a photo of a dead person. While I don’t support capital punishment usually clear cut cases like this where lots of people saw the crime took place in real time are a different matter imo

@DonnaBanana agree he did a terrible thing, but capital punishment seems disproportionate

Yep and these footy lads behave usually as scummy as him and threatening his family and gf which I have seen.

Also plenty of idiots threatening wrong man yep let's leave it to these knuckle draggers

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/10/2023 21:16

People like that shouldn’t be given access to vulnerable children (or people in general). Especially not as a form of „punishment“. The possibility of them being even more resentful and taking that out on vulnerable patients would worry me even more.

I‘m not condoning it but the outcry locally has been like nothing I’ve ever seen on social media so it seems likely.

I live locally and have sent it all including people with same name getting dragged into it thats why I disagree with mobs as they are usually run by a similar moron to ones they are attacking.

And if the wrong person gets a kicking because knuckle draggers can't tell one person from another oh well, and yes I have seen another bloke who had same name getting abused

Edited

Not everybody needs to be qualified. Hospices use many volunteers in non-clinical roles.

Def a coke head. The local pub which is renowned for drugs have put a statement out saying he will no longer be playing football for them or be drinking in there

If he doesn't go to jail, which is debatable. He will have to move areas as it will become unviable for him to go out and about.

@christologymum

thats great for you all living there! Unfortunately it's just going to mean he inflicts himself on another area!

I don't know what the answer is though?!!

NeedTheSeaside · 02/10/2023 21:33

christologymum · 02/10/2023 18:49

He lives on the next street to me, and the local Facebook pages have been going crazy. His family have been subject to abuse which is a bit unfair. His employer has also made a statement to say he will no longer be employed.

@christologymum

what are his family like??

DonnaBanana · 02/10/2023 21:34

For those of you saying it seems overboard because no actual violence or the like actually occurred, do you think we shouldn't prosecute people for speeding or drink driving as long as long as they don't hit anyone? The fact in this case is his actions could have created a riot and caused a lot of injuries and maybe even fatalities. It doesn't matter that they actually didn't.

NeedTheSeaside · 02/10/2023 21:36

BabyStopCryin · 02/10/2023 19:24

I’d rather he made himself useful and was sent to do unpaid work in a local child’s hospice or hospital ward.

@BabyStopCryin

you cannot be serious!

would you want this twat around your children?

let alone in a hospice/hospital?

Forgotmylogindetails · 02/10/2023 21:37

I mean, I've posted the actual Law and the sentencing guidelines for the offence he has committed - I'm not sure what else they need, because they aren't going to set a legal precedent on the basis of 'Well, I don't think it was that bad, really'.

He's done it, he's admitted it (not that he could really have denied it, but his legal counsel would have pointed out that they can't act for him if he lied to them and he would get some 'credit' for making his plea at the earliest opportunity) and the Law has provided that in those circumstances, those would be the appropriate sentences.

NeedTheSeaside · 02/10/2023 21:40

@Alargeoneplease89

he's declared he don't give a fk and shows no remorse. I hope fellow Sheffieldians give him what he deserves

me too! Then we won't have to worry about the cost going forward
