MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

One sausage in a bun is not brunch

Jevwaypock · 28/08/2023 19:01

Why didn’t you just ask for another sausage? She probably just only had 1 pack and cooked them. I don’t really see the issue, she had 1 sausage also đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚ this cannay be real

RunningUpThatBuilding · 28/08/2023 19:03

Did you or DH not question the quantity of food?

If this happened with my ILs DH would have made a remark for sure! However he’s never had to as they always put on plenty of food.

Timeforabiscuit · 28/08/2023 19:03

That is not brunch, it sounds like she's doling out penis portions though!

I'd be very tempted to ask her to dinner and provide a teaspoon of peas and a fish finger for that abomination.

Annaishere · 28/08/2023 19:04

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

AmyDudley · 28/08/2023 19:04

I only have one sausage in a bun as a hot dog, so it would be fine for me. I mean that's what a hot dog is isn't it, one sausage in one bun ?

CherryMaDeara · 28/08/2023 19:05

I wouldn’t eat there again.

I bet they expect a slap up meal at yours.

Not where I’m from! Brunch is a breakfast/lunch combo so is a proper meal as it is designed to be both!

Oh, right

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:07

She’s not the sort of person you’d ask for more food from. It’s really weird. She’s slim and probably thinks we need to lose weight đŸ˜‚

DH wouldn’t even question her, so I wouldn’t either. She’s his mother.

Lesson learnt after today!!

@Timeforabiscuit I like that idea. But she wouldn’t come to visit us.

Here too! I would have had to eat somewhere else after as I don't eat before if invited for brunch. One sausage in a bun is not brunch.

Don't you eat something with that sausage in a bun like a salad or some wedges ?

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:09

@AmyDudley it wasn’t a hot dog, just the bun and a sausage.
This was a have a light breakfast (we had 1 dry teacake each) and was basically our lunch as we wouldn’t eat again till 5pm ish.

I understand brunch to be a meal that substitutes both breakfast and lunch, that is eaten late morning or midday. It is therefore more substantial than breakfast.

Typical brunch dishes:

  • Buttermilk pancakes with fresh fruit and ice cream
  • Eggs Benedict
  • Avocado toast with roast tomatoes and chilli flakes
  • bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Brunch replaces both breakfast and lunch, so I'd be starving with one sausage in a bun!

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:11

@Jevwaypock she’d bought it in specially. I really wish it wasn’t real đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚

This is hilarious, honestly. You have a funny story about Granny for the years to come. "Remember when Granny tried to starve us all to death..."

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 28/08/2023 19:12

She wouldn't visit you? Take the 1 banger and call that a bloody win op!!

pilates · 28/08/2023 19:13

I would expect a full fry up for brunch but I wouldn’t make a big deal about it. Were they proper butcher’s sausages or supermarket?

CoraPirbright · 28/08/2023 19:13

Is she normally stingy with food or does she just not understand the concept of brunch?

Sorry OP I mis-read your initial post and thought you were having a light brekkie with them before brunch, so I didn’t see the issue đŸ˜‚ But as you were there for brunch I would at least expect a bit of scrambled eggs on the side!

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:15

They were supermarket one!!!!

Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch. Not a snack between those meals.

brunch should be amazing - omlettes, bucks fizz, croissants, cinnamon rolls, French toast, eggs Benedict, bacon rolls

we do brunch on Christmas Eve and can’t eat until Christmas Day!

if someone gave me a hotdog for brunch I would cryđŸ˜‚đŸ¥‚đŸ¥‚

No it’s not. It’s a combination of breakfast and lunch. Not an extra meal. It’s substantial. It’s not one sausage that’s for certain.
