MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

That is not brunch, it sounds like she's doling out penis portions though!

I'd be very tempted to ask her to dinner and provide a teaspoon of peas and a fish finger for that abomination.

Just curious- what is a penis portion????

Giving people with a penis a bigger portion

You do realise that men are supposed to eat more don’t you?

So many women are overweight and unhealthy because they eat the same amount in the name of equal rights

The number of calories a person needs to eat is based on a number of factors including height/weight/activity levels. It has nothing to do with whether you were born with a penis or not. The average male will be taller and heavier than the average female so “generally” men need more calories but it is not simply a case of all men need more food than all females.

Jeannie88 · 29/08/2023 19:37

When hosting brunch there is always more food than needed, what isn't eaten gets used for next day! We are feeders lol 😆

There was a spare - the 8th one that was offered to OP's DH but he refused after looking at OPs face. OP also didn't ask for it as she felt she couldn't What isn't clear is "who ate the 8th sausage?"

OP needs to clear that up

Not us, we left it there. I have answered this a few times.

Is she trying to insinuate you need to lose weight? 🤣

I did wonder!

She had a dig at DH as well though.

In the US brunch is a combination breakfast lunch. So you have a combination of breakfast and lunch foods.
I went to a potluck brunch on Sunday the options were a frittata with bacon, blue cheese, sausage and veggies, oatmeal muffin bake, English muffins, a fresh salad bar, a lobster bisque, mini waffles, preserves, honey butter, nut butters, fresh fruits. The pineapple mimosas were the top.

I had surgery yesterday so I got to take home all of the leftovers for my meals this week.

maimeo · 29/08/2023 20:37

Agree a hot dog is actually a frankfurter sausage in a long roll, as in the U.S. Over here we use regular sausages and I would call it sausage-in-a-roll or a sausie sandwich!!

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

Brunch is instead of breakfast and lunch - one meal which is late breakfast, early lunch. It needs to be a meal!

Olika · 29/08/2023 21:34

Do they have Ubereats there?

No, there’s no delivery service and not many cafes etc on a bank holiday open. We did have a snack bag fortunately.
I’ll know in future to take the offer of food with a pinch of salt.

Only your DH gets a pinch of salt, none for you.

You sound obsessed with food

you ate at 7am then again at 11am and were home by 5pm

you spent the day sitting down

hope you all survived

spitefulandbadgrammar · 30/08/2023 07:47

One dry tea cake at 7am, a single sausage in a hot dog bun at 11am, home by 5pm for dinner = obsessed! It’s quite usual to eat three meals a day, you know?

Cancel the cheque!

Sparkles2323 · 30/08/2023 08:41

She sounds like my crazy mil. She is an oddball and we didn’t see much of her for a little while. We had 2 toddlers when we reconnected and she invited us for lunch. She however, said she didn’t realise toddlers ate food like other people - I was gobsmacked! She then wrapped 2 chairs in bin bags and covered the (tiled) floor with more plastic and begrudgingly let them eat 🤣

And those aren't meals, they are snacks.

I had a brunch birthday party the day after my wedding... I missed out on the hot chocolate made with real chocolate and cream but you definitely couldn't go hungry if you'd tried. There was so much food.

If someone said sausages in buns, I'd expect at least two buns per person probably with two sausages in each (as in morning rolls/baps/cob). We used to have Breakfast Events at work and there were mounds of them. We also had mounds of Danish Pastries and Croissants and Bacon Rolls too...

Serenity45 · 30/08/2023 10:58

Anyone else thinking of "sausage inna bun" from CMOT Dibbler while reading this thread? Grin

YANBU OP I come from a family of over caterers (DH side as well, thankfully), so I can't imagine your dismay. It was a running joke when I was growing up that literally anyone who came to ours at any time of day or night was offered a bacon sandwich by my mum...

Umm no. Brunch is designed to replace both breakfast and lunch so should be a substantial meal that keeps you going until late afternoon/teatime.

That's pathetic Penis portions and in no way deserves the title brunch.

AvocadotoastORahouse · 30/08/2023 11:50

Typical brunch dishes:

• Buttermilk pancakes with fresh fruit and ice cream
• Eggs Benedict
• Avocado toast with roast tomatoes and chilli flakes
• bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

@LightDrizzle yes! A proper brunch is a thing of beauty. Even better with a Buck's Fizz Grin

Now I'm hungry.

Notimeforaname · 30/08/2023 11:52

Very much of the mindset he’s the man so he eats more.

I've lived my whole life understanding that men generally need more calories than women, the same way children dont need as many calories as grown women.

But the one sausage in a bun was definitely not enough for anybody except a small child!
