MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

Oh, right

@Annaishere where on Earth are you from that brunch (br(eakfast)(l) unch) is between breakfast & lunch not a meal that covers both???

@Nikee20 if I was going somewhere for brunch I wouldn't have had a light breakfast first, just as well you did! I don't usually eat breakfast or lunch so I'd have been 'ok' food wise, but I'd have been disappointed that it wasn't a nice brunch. It's all very weird, plus 'penis portions'

are they usually so tight with their hosting?

I'm waiting for the 'that would fill me up for the week day' crowd to arrive.

😁

Honestly for me brunch has always been "we got up late and have been dossing around all morning, it's now noon and we haven't eaten yet so let's have a fry up and call it "brunch" to avoid being seen as lazy bastards".

Yes, for me too!

ShrinkingSusan · 28/08/2023 19:50

Annaishere · 28/08/2023 19:04

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

But you have it instead of breakfast and lunch so it needs to be substantial to keep you going until dinner.

2Rebecca · 28/08/2023 19:51

Catering for relatives isn't about calorie restriction, it's a meal as a social occasion

You're thinking of elevenses.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/08/2023 19:51

I'd just make it an excuse to stop for a big afternoon tea at 3pm in future! But then I'd never have my evening meal at 5pm like you were planning too, so I'd have to rejig that too, and have a nice supper of something at 8 or 9pm! 😜It could be your new routine when you visit them, and even something you look forward to!

Tiredmum100 · 28/08/2023 19:52

So, no sides to go with it? I don't like a lot of bread, so one roll and sausage would be ok for me, but I would certainly expect sides to go with it or at least another single sausage/eggs. I guess you know for next time. Have they always served small portions?

WelshNerd · 28/08/2023 19:52

Next time you know to have a massive breakfast and then eat a tiny mouthful of whatever she offers you. Lots of pass agg comments "oh I couldn't possibly eat a whole sausage for brunch!", "You must be hungry MIL, a sausage AND a bun..."

Most people have brunch instead of breakfast and dinner, so it needs to be a good meal, not a snack.

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:53

@NeedTheSeaside we only ate something because we were up from 7am and ‘brunch’ was around 11am. So had to eat something, so had something very light.
TBH we don’t really eat at their house, food is barely offered. So we eat out. We were surprised when she said she’d provide us with some food.

She does pay for 1 lunch out when we’re there, so not all bad. But she obviously can’t finish it all as it’s ‘too big’ while we’re there eating the same meal….

How many calories do you need to sit in a car all day?

A few or you might faint tbh. Always good to be able to concentrate on the road but you don't want so many carbs that you'd feel sleepy. I think 2 sausages 1 bun is the optimum.

Notjustabrunette · 28/08/2023 19:53

No, brunch is like a late breakfast or early lunch. Definitely lots of food.

BacktoBeginnersFran · 28/08/2023 19:54

@Bellyblueboy Please can I come to your house for Christmas Eve brunch? Pretty, pretty please 🙏 ☺

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:55

Sorry @CurlyhairedAssassin I meant we couldn’t eat again till 5pm at the earliest.

@WelshNerd I love that idea!

I just must have a totally different life from a lot of other mums. I can’t imagine that the most tricky problem that I had to talk about was MIL and sausages!

ShrinkingSusan · 28/08/2023 19:56

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:24

Another example was the mince pies I brought when we visited around Christmas time.
We stay in a hotel and didn’t have dinner at theirs.
I brought mince pies for all of us to share (has them saved for the trip up). DH gave her them (which he shouldn’t have) and she put them in the cupboard….never to be seen again. I then couldn’t buy anymore as they weren’t available.
So I didn’t have a mince pie all Christmas!!!!

I'd have suggested we get them out when tea was offered.

Surely tea was offered?! not going to be surprised if it wasn't

Redbrickrebel · 28/08/2023 19:56

I don't understand why you didn't go straight from the inlaws to a cafe or shop to get more food and have a laugh about what terrible hosts they are? You didn't have to wait until 5pm to eat again did you?

Bellyblueboy · 28/08/2023 19:42

😂 in fairness brunch lasts hours!!

we start with Buck’s Fizz as folk arrive - small stuff to nibble on. Then savoury stuff - omlettes and mini bagels with crème cheese and salmon - that sort of thing. More Buck’s Fizz. That last from about 11am to 1pm 1 then the kids bake Santa cookies and the adults have pastries a cinnamon rolls, pain au chocolate etc and coffees. We are issuing still having brunch at 3pm. We then have mince pies and Irish coffees infront of a Christmas movie. Older relatives usually fall asleep infront of the telly. I usually have something in for a later supper but it often isn’t until Ben put int he oven - and does Boxing Day.

I host and usually have a few relatives staying plus family dropping in. Bloody exhausting

A bit misleading to say "we have a brunch and can't eat until the next day!" when what you actually meant was.
"We constantly graze for 5 or more hours from 11am until the late afternoon and then don't eat until the next morning".

if a sausage in a roll isn’t a hot dog what is it? That’s not a joke by the way.

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/08/2023 19:58

@CherryPieMadness well luckily for you Mumsnet isn’t only for people’s most tricky problems! It can also be for anything amusing or mildly vexing. And this would
more than mildly vex me.

00100001 · 28/08/2023 19:58

A hot dog is a sausage in a long/finger roll.

A sausage in a round roll is a a sausage bap.

I think of mumsnet as somewhere to have a nice chat. You don’t need to bring your trickiest problems - just like you wouldn’t dump all your deepest darkest problems on your friends over coffee (or brunch).

it’s okay to have a light hearted whinge - doesn’t take away from whatever is going wrong in your life - and I am sorry you are having a tough time🥰.

Wrong - brunch is to replace both breakfast and lunch so should be huge!

😂 sorry! Yes it’s a marathon - but we call it brunch and only brunch foods are served.

it is my favourite day of Christmas and I love every second!!!!
