MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

A hot dog is a sausage in a long/finger roll.

A sausage in a round roll is a a sausage bap.

I’d assumed it was a long roll but in fairness I don’t expect one would be more filling than the other.

I'd have suggested we get them out when tea was offered.

Surely tea was offered?! not going to be surprised if it wasn't

Quite!

Just get up and go to the kitchen saying"where did you put the mince pies MIL? I'll get them out for us to share"

And then just get them out!

Ienjoyedthebarbiemovie · 28/08/2023 20:02

im confused with how this was split.

this is what is in my head
3 adults got 1 sausage. =3
1 adult and 1 child got 2 sausages -=4

so there was a sausage going spare? Is this right? I’d have stolen that spare sausage

Omg I love brunch so turning up for this would be devastating. Id be expecting a fry up or pancakes stacks with fruit or egg Benedict and the option of pasties etc after. Perhaps like PP she thinks it's a snack between breakfast and lunch?

MissHoollie · 28/08/2023 20:03

This is like my mum.
I think it's perhaps generational
I've been at my mum's all day and got offered a coffee once .. mellow birds

SnowWhiteAndTheTwoKids · 28/08/2023 20:04

My MIL is like this too! Tiny portions for women and children. Men get decent portions and seconds first. She even checks the exact portions on the back of packs of rice / pasta and only cooks one portion per adult. I usually ask her what she's cooking in advance and bring accompaniments now to bulk up the meal so we don't all go hungry!

NewLifeHappyLife · 28/08/2023 20:04

well, you COULD have eaten again- if you are driving on a motorway then there is clearly the odd McDonalds- or service stations for wine gums at the very least - always the best thing about driving anywhere IMO.

But no, what she served was a bit paltry.

I just must have a totally different life from a lot of other mums. I can’t imagine that the most tricky problem that I had to talk about was MIL and sausages!

Who died and made you the Thread Police?

Why aren't the men in your life pointing out the unfairness/sharing their meals?

If my DH was given 3 sausages and me 1, he would comment saying something like " whoops, mum gave me 3 by mistake, here Binary have this extra sausage"

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

Brunch is a full proper meal in itself served at late breakfast/early lunch time and contains breakfast items together with sweet things such as pancakes/fruit/cake.

Why didn't you just ask for another cuppa/help yourself/offer to make the next round?

Confused
SquirrelFan · 28/08/2023 20:08

@ChocolateCakeOverspill
Sausages on left, hot dogs on right. (not sure what the things on top are, but they look tasty)
Sausages - usually pork, thick, meaty and full of flavour.
Hot dogs - usually narrow coral-coloured tubes of meat with little texture designed to be mostly inoffensive.
Both can be served in a bun, but they're a very different experience!

@BiscuitsandPuffin We must share in-laws! Mine sat in a pub once ruining lunch, faces like thunder, arms crossed, radiating displeasure: because “it’s too many chips”. Same weekend they came out with “this muffin is too big”. I’ve never seen such competitive misery over having plenty of food available to them. We don’t ever stay there because MIL (who rules the kitchen, FIL doesn’t get a look in, let alone visitors) doesn’t make lunch, serve lunch, have any food in for us to make lunch. Always just announces “oh, I had breakfast, I’ll make a cup of tea”. Spend my time there trembling from hunger and confusion.

moomoosaka · 28/08/2023 20:11

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:29

@moomoosaka I suspect she thinks we both need to lose some weight (which I don’t deny). But it’s not up to her to do it.
How do you manage the digs?

I answer them with a straight face while thinking yeah yeah.. so "I don't have time for the gym - I work and have a toddler".

Why wouldn't you just go to outside where there's food in abundance to be purchased when MIL announces there's no lunch?

Why sit there hungry?

And in response to " too many/big" I'd just be like " don't eat it then" or "I'll have it, thanks!"

That’s some weird assumption. At no point has the OP said this was the trickiest problem in her life.

These kinds of snotty comments are so pointless.

Yes, for me too!

If it got late on Saturdays or Sundays we would add hash browns to the bacon and eggs, calling it brunch

No! Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch, so it is a meal.

They live in the arse end of nowhere where there isn’t food in abundance, actually, and there’s an ~atmosphere if some upstart dares to cater for themselves at a normal meal time. Besides it involves packing children in the car over naptime and going out for a proper expedition in search of something, and we can’t bring it back with us, all hell would break loose. Generally we just don’t go to their house! Don’t do days out with them either now, as it’s impossible to manage small fussy children being annoying at their lunch in a cafe if PIL are pointedly not eating and turning their noses up at the food. Strict cup of tea and hour max together relationship now
