MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

Is there a financial issue? Being aware that some people ‘appear’ to have good finances, but a lot of women don’t necessarily feel that they have access to funds.

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

I always consider Breakfast as replacement for Breakfast and Lunch - not as well as.
Given that OP had a long journey, doesn't sound adequate - but why not say "long journey home, can I have the remaining sausage"?

Annaishere · 28/08/2023 19:15

Well I’ve learned what brunch is today

Annaishere · 28/08/2023 19:16

OP I think if your MIL is quite slim she probably just assumed you have the same appetite as her

Lol how

You pretended to be the only person on earth not to know what brunch is.

then suggested slim people will serve other people tiny portions when entertaining.

so slim people are bad hosts and you live in a cave.

or are an almond mum

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:20

@BranchGold absolutely no financial issues.

Definitely penis portions.

It could be worse. My BiL and Sil get mains and 2 puddings when they visit PiL. We didn't get so much as a biscuit last time we called by and now we live nearby, we just hear about the puddings!

I’ve never consciously had “brunch”

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:09

@AmyDudley it wasn’t a hot dog, just the bun and a sausage.
This was a have a light breakfast (we had 1 dry teacake each) and was basically our lunch as we wouldn’t eat again till 5pm ish.

A hotdog is a bun and sausage though. What do you class as a hotdog?

Bellyblueboy · 28/08/2023 19:23

I’ve never consciously had “brunch”

But you have watched tv? Stayed in a hotel? Looked at a menu? Talked to friends? Been to a cafe or restaurant?

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:24

Another example was the mince pies I brought when we visited around Christmas time.
We stay in a hotel and didn’t have dinner at theirs.
I brought mince pies for all of us to share (has them saved for the trip up). DH gave her them (which he shouldn’t have) and she put them in the cupboard….never to be seen again. I then couldn’t buy anymore as they weren’t available.
So I didn’t have a mince pie all Christmas!!!!

Lol at the idea that brunch is in addition to breakfast and lunch - that's elevenses you're thinking of. One sausage in a hot dog bin is not brunch. But lesson learned, just make sure you have a proper breakfast first next time!

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:25

@midtownmum I definitely will!!!

It sounds like she and her husband are bad hosts.

I assume that is why you stay in a hotel.

I think going forward lower your expectations. Treat them to brunch out - if they invite you for lunch or dinner or brunch say

’its so much work to feed us all - and the kids are ravenous monsters - we will treat you, let’s go out’.

everyone gets a proper amount of food and stress levels stay low!

moomoosaka · 28/08/2023 19:27

My MIL does this to me along with not very subtle questions about how I fit the gym in (knowing full well I dont)

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 28/08/2023 19:27

Send her a message with photos of your idea of brunch...

Pandorapitstop · 28/08/2023 19:27

Table should be heaving with food for a family brunch.

Beautiful3 · 28/08/2023 19:27

Next time I'd fill up on breakfast, then a little something at hers. Now you know, her portions are very small.

I actually don’t really do these things except look at menus but they aren’t in nice cafes and restaurants

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 28/08/2023 19:28

My dmil, who I loved the very bones of, would cook a chicken for lunch and invite her kids/grandkids. So between 20 then.

Createausername1970 · 28/08/2023 19:28

Nooooo! No mince pies at Christmas 😱

Consider it lesson learnt, accept that there is an eddy in the time space continuum at your ILs, and have a snack bag in the car in future.

justme2022 · 28/08/2023 19:28

I vote for @Bellyblueboy and @LightDrizzle to take it in turns hosting Mumsnet brunches.
