MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

@moomoosaka I suspect she thinks we both need to lose some weight (which I don’t deny). But it’s not up to her to do it.
How do you manage the digs?

One sausage in bread is in no way a ‘brunch’. That’s a snack. She’s fobbed you right off!

foolishone · 28/08/2023 19:31

@Niftyswiftie a hot dog is a hot dog sausage (not the same a normal sausage) in a long bun. Hopefully served with ketchup, mustard and fried onions with sides too.

This sounds like a solitary breakfast sausage in a roll.

My PILs are batshit about food too. Twice now they've visited, we've ordered takeaway (I always pay), they've ordered one portion of takeaway between them and eaten half between them on the night, then they tell us they're full so they don't want the rest and to put it in the fridge and share it between us tomorrow, like we'd want half a random takeaway between two adults.

They also made a huge song and dance of going out to our local sit-in chippy and ordering fish and chips then embarrassing us (small town) by loudly complaining to staff and sending their partly-eaten food back and demanding a refund because it was too big and they couldn't possibly eat it all. They've got weight to spare so IDK if it's all just a show.

They also do penis portions when it comes to Christmas dinner so we try to avoid it. And they give my toddler DC random snacks that toddlers are unlikely to enjoy, then after he's been good and tried the new food, decided he didn't like it, and put it down on the plate, they tell him off for not eating the lot (which results invariably in an argument when I stand up for him). They didn't grow up without food, they're just bizarre people (in other ways too).

I don't have any answers OP but solidarity! 😆

@foolishone that’s exactly what it was. One coop sausage in a hot dog bun with ketchup.

Am I the only person who has breakfast then doesn't eat again until dinner time? Around 5pm usually. (I'm definitely not slim!)

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

No! Brunch is both breakfast and lunch combined.

That's even worse, they're tiny! I hope you stopped on the way home.

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:35

@BiscuitsandPuffin glad it’s not just me!!
They sound exhausting.

Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch. Not a snack between those meals.

brunch should be amazing - omlettes, bucks fizz, croissants, cinnamon rolls, French toast, eggs Benedict, bacon rolls

we do brunch on Christmas Eve and can’t eat until Christmas Day!

if someone gave me a hotdog for brunch I would cry😂🥂🥂

Yeah. Brunch should be amazing!

You eat at 11-12 and eat so much food you can't eat until 20 hours later???

How many fucking croissants are you guys eating in one sitting??

GorillaInBikini · 28/08/2023 19:37

That is not brunch. Last time I went to a friend's for brunch she served pancakes, cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit, avocado toast and bacon for the meat eaters. That is madness.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 28/08/2023 19:37

Omg I'd be hitting Gregg's on the way home 🫣

2Rebecca · 28/08/2023 19:38

I'll often have brunch on a weekend and it's usually something egg based. If doing extended family brunch there would be something like sausages/ bacon/ waffles or home made pancakes, croissants, bread with assorted jams and marmalade. She sounds like she doesn't understand brunch replaces 2 meals

VeridicalVagabond · 28/08/2023 19:39

Honestly for me brunch has always been "we got up late and have been dossing around all morning, it's now noon and we haven't eaten yet so let's have a fry up and call it "brunch" to avoid being seen as lazy bastards".

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:40

They knew we had over 3 hours in a car and don’t stop to eat normally.

I wish we’d just had a massive breakfast now and ignored their promises of food.

Lesson 100% learnt!

😂 in fairness brunch lasts hours!!

we start with Buck’s Fizz as folk arrive - small stuff to nibble on. Then savoury stuff - omlettes and mini bagels with crème cheese and salmon - that sort of thing. More Buck’s Fizz. That last from about 11am to 1pm 1 then the kids bake Santa cookies and the adults have pastries a cinnamon rolls, pain au chocolate etc and coffees. We are issuing still having brunch at 3pm. We then have mince pies and Irish coffees infront of a Christmas movie. Older relatives usually fall asleep infront of the telly. I usually have something in for a later supper but it often isn’t until Ben put int he oven - and does Boxing Day.

I host and usually have a few relatives staying plus family dropping in. Bloody exhausting

Trenchfootinthescottishhighlandstoday · 28/08/2023 19:43

Order a huge take away and send them pics!

TomatoSandwiches · 28/08/2023 19:44

A coop sausage in a hotdogs bun is not brunch.
If I'm doing brunch at home it's invariably a cooked breakfast with pancakes, crepes or parfait with fruit for a sweet finish with plenty of fresh coffee a pot of tea and juice.
Everyone helps themselves to the latter and I always make more than I should but DH and DS end up making a cold sausage sandwich in the afternoon that tides them over until the evening.

Next time op you know to load up on breakfast!

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 19:44

It’s the offering the extra sausage to everyone except me that got me. As I must have been filled up with the massive meal Ii’d been given!!!!
At that point I didn’t even want the bloody sausage as I was annoyed about what was going on 😂😂😂

How many calories do you need to sit in a car all day?

Storynanny1 · 28/08/2023 19:45

My late mother was funny about portions ( she was def not slim)- when my sister and I plus husbands and 6 grandsons between us were invited for tea. she’d butter a couple of slices of bread, put 2 packets of crisps in a bowl, a few slices of ham and some thin slices of cucumber on the table. Every single time showed surprise at having to send my dad into the kitchen to butter a few more slices.
And the driest dullest shop bought cake ever!
It became the family joke though and we just ate when we got home.

Approximately 1 sausage in a hot dog bun worth according to MIL!
