To not understand what Philip Scofield did wrong?

I’m not a fan of Phil or Holly and have never watched This Morning. However, I’ve read about the issues the show has been facing in the news recently and am at a loss to understand why Phil had to step down. What did he actually do wrong?

I know his brother has been imprisoned for a heinous crime but obviously that’s nothing to do with Phil. So I don’t understand why he decided to resign.

It is to do with Phil because he never reported it to the police. Only told his brother to 'never do it again'.

Partytastic · 20/05/2023 20:21

His brother told him what was happening, Phil didn’t inform the police and his brother continued to abuse the child.

redroseq · 20/05/2023 20:22

I gather Holly was upset about a statement Phil released to the media recently about their friendship, but having read what he said, it seemed pretty innocuous?

It's a rule that a thread about a celebrity must have the name spelt incorrectly im the header, and you've obliged. Well done!

I see - so is that what caused the fallout? Understandable if so!

How did it come to light that Phil didn’t report his brother to the police?

The statement, released without Holly's knowledge, came at a time when the Willoughby's were beginning to distance themselves from the bad publicity surrounding Schofield.

All about protecting their brand.

It started with Queuegate.

I haven’t seen any article that states the brother situation as the reason for the fallout. Most articles seem to suggest it was due to either 1) Phil not telling Holly what was going on with his brother (I think?!) or 2) the fact he released a gushing statement about their friendship.

He had an inappropriate relationship with a young runner - which is just the start of it

RudsyFarmer · 20/05/2023 20:28

I think there’s a lot of romper about him having inappropriate relationships before he came out. The speculation is that he was forced out the closet and then his brother being imprisoned for sex with a minor has just finished it off. There were allegations that he knew but didn’t go to the police.

RudsyFarmer · 20/05/2023 20:28

*rumours

RedRosette2023 · 20/05/2023 20:29

I was wondering the same OP so thanks for asking!

redroseq · 20/05/2023 20:29

And how does anyone know for a fact that he was aware of what his brother did but didn’t go to the police? That seems unlikely?!

The fact he has managed to hang on to his job this long is surprising

MermaidEyes · 20/05/2023 20:30

I think there's probably many things gone off between Phil and Holly in private that we'll never know about.

Farmageddon · 20/05/2023 20:30

Shagging a young runner from the show is ick. Plus many of the viewers of This Morning are women and mothers, who didn't take kindly to how he treated his wife by lying to her for years...

If you are the face of morning tv, you have to be squeaky clean, reputation is everything. The brother thing was the icing on the cake, frankly I'm surprised he lasted this long.

FantasticMax · 20/05/2023 20:31

I don’t think Holly comes out of this very well either. Just someone who’ll cut ties if the person can no longer serve them well. Not defending Philip at all - but she seems ruthless and self serving and this has damaged her brand regardless.

Ladykryptonite · 20/05/2023 20:31

He's basically a massive wrongun

I know.

But bloody hell. It 'only being a one off' is how we talk about a sneaky cig after a drink, or finishing a whole domino's family meal deal by oneself.

Not this.

Ladykryptonite · 20/05/2023 20:31

Holly is not much better

It came to light when Phil said in court that this is what had happened.

I’m dubious that Phil and Holly fell out over it, although it’s understandable if they did. I think Holly’s PR people would have told her to distance herself.

redroseq · 20/05/2023 20:32

Is the young runner thing actually backed up by evidence though? Just curious as it all just seems like a lot of hearsay and speculation. But as he did step down there clearly must have been some reason for it.
