To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

I don't know. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, but vaping doesn't bother me at all. 🤷‍♀️

90stalgia · 08/05/2023 11:27

Vaping is banned on stations and trains - the issue you've had is to do with the ban not being enforced.

Tesco need to provide a suitable smoking/vaping area for their staff - I've never seen one in the grounds of a Tesco.

Thepeopleversuswork · 08/05/2023 11:34

I think there is enough stigma around smoking as it is tbh (and rightly so). Smoking has become so unacceptable. People who smoke are looked down upon as a underclass nowadays in society and it’s virtually impossible to smoke in most public places. Vaping I can’t get as excited about really.

I don’t see what further restrictions would achieve really. I loathe cigarette smoke but I think criminalising it completely is a step too far.

GoodChat · 08/05/2023 11:35

Vaping isn't permitted on train platforms. The rules are the same as smoking.

People who are smoking or vaping should be considerate and do it any from other people.

GoodChat · 08/05/2023 11:35

*away not any

MaggieFS · 08/05/2023 11:36

I agree. I don't like either, but I find vape clouds more pungent and lingering. It's revolting.

Having said that, as a start, I'd take no vaping/smoking in all outdoor dining areas.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/05/2023 11:36

I think the smoking sheds idea has potential. Especially if that then became the only place cigarettes were available.

KimberleyClark · 08/05/2023 11:36

The problem with vaping is that it was originally intended as a smoking cessation aid but people are not using it in that way.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 11:37

Are there no health concerns yet?

They are bringing in vaping areas at work

You just know people will get their mates down there, and ooh let's make a coffee and go for a vape ( and disappear chatting for 30 mins x 4 a day!)

manontroppo · 08/05/2023 11:38

Vaping clouds are foul -they are like horrific air freshener on steroids. Would love to move towards a NZ model where vaping is only available on prescription and it’s only unflavoured.

The environmental impact of disposable vapes is also horrific.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/05/2023 11:40

Banish us all under ground.

CornishGem1975 · 08/05/2023 11:40

The smell of vapes makes me want to yack, it's so sickly sweet. I also hate having to walk through people's huge clouds. It's really anti-social, as anti-social as actual smoking. Plus people look ridiculous, like giant babies sucking on a soother.

titbumwillypoo · 08/05/2023 11:40

You're completely correct as long as other polluting things like cars are banned at the same time. A cigarette produces 14g of co2, a gallon of petrol makes 8,887 grams of CO2. And as for trains on 177 grams per passenger mile you seem to be directing your ire at the wrong thing.

Jonei · 08/05/2023 11:42

Oh great, another vape / smoking hate thread.

No. I don't think it should be banned.

LooseFit · 08/05/2023 11:42

It doesn’t bother me at all. Nothing compared to the horror of smoking. I was walking behind a guy smoking a fag on the way to work the other day and I stunk of it when I got to work. So unpleasant.

Vaping, on the other hand, doesn’t bother me if it’s outside. And as far as I know, it’s banned in restaurants etc and on trains, so people doing it are breaking the rules already in place.

Yes, it’s fucking rank and comes with serious health issues.

Do what you like in your own home, but out and about you can put up with people judging you for the horrific smell.

And stop with the whataboutism already.

lap90 · 08/05/2023 11:45

IMO vaping should be banned in indoor public places.

Yes. I think this is the issue. Vaping has been around for a few years now and initially it wasn't an issue in public as relatively few people vaped. Now it seems that every other person is vaping and it's everywhere. I really object to walking to work behind endless clouds of vape, to the point I'm arriving smelling of blueberry fizz or whatever each day.

YANBU! Every time you leave a building or a station or something you have to walk through toxic clouds. I vote for sealed smokers boxes (like in airports) so they can choke on their own fumes and leave us out of it.

CornishGem1975 · 08/05/2023 11:48

It's endemic in schools. It's a serious issue and concern. Kids sell them in school.

Eileen101 · 08/05/2023 11:48

Yanbu. I hate people blowing their vape clouds. The smell is always foul and fake 'fruit'. Plus it worries me that eventually it'll be discovered that it has poor health effects.

Arightoldcarryabag · 08/05/2023 11:48

Yeah I shouldn't be able to medicate in public because some tossers can't be respectful?
No thanks.

MrBit · 08/05/2023 11:48

No I don't think they should be banned
