To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

@elevenplusdilemma Thank YOU!
I was expecting to be attacked for still smoking, lol, but yes, I do try very hard not to offend anyone. :-)

Freddiefan · 08/05/2023 12:55

I am very allergic to smoke as I have asthma and bronchiectasis. One of the things that annoys me is that I can't sit in a pub beer garden because of the smokers.
When I hear my neighbour's lighter click in the garden, I have to run inside the house.

@Jonei if people were out blasting perfume or deodorant in my face then I would agree! But they aren't....

It feels like it's being blasted in my face when I walk past the stinky perfume wearers. Absolutely fucking gross.

WateryDoom · 08/05/2023 13:01

Yes, it's vile. I don't want to breath in cigarette smoke - but even less do I want to breath in stinking chemicals full of Christ knows what. The pp who said they were like air fresheners on steroids had it spot on.

They make me wheeze and affect my chest far more than cigarette smoke. They are foul and I wish people would stop.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 13:05

The perfume has settled on the skin rather than it being sprayed into the air

Vaping is pumped out and it's gross

Why the stupid flavours as well? Where's the point? Always going to be attractive to children

Which it seems it is.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 13:06

And anyway, there is now evidence emerging of the health risks

So only a matter of time before vaping goes the same way as smoking has.... 👏🏻

elevenplusdilemma · 08/05/2023 12:47

Yes, this is my point exactly. Thank you for being so considerate - TBF, most smokers are. It's been a long time since I remember being bothered by fag smoke in a public place. Vapers on the other hand...

Some vapers. Just like some smokers. It also stands to reason you will be less bothered by fag smoke, because so many people have switched to vaping.

But just because there's some inconsiderate people doesn't mean it should be banned for everyone. A bit of a sledgehammer approach. After all, some of the things that I find annoying.

Loud people.
Groups of teenagers.
Escooters
Electric cars because I can't hear them coming
Authoritarian fuckwits
Perfume
People with bully type dogs. (So ban all dogs)
People using regular flights to go on pointless holidays abroad.

Where does it end? And who decides? And what happens if something is on the banned list that you happen to like / enjoy?

I'm not going to stop. On the plus side for you, it's extremely unlikely that I would ever be breathing it in to yours, or anyone else's face.

justteanbiscuits · 08/05/2023 13:09

I equate the vapes that create massive amounts of vapour with loud engine sport cars - a "look at me, I am an alpha male as I can create so much smoke". It's ridiculous and totally not needed and IMO just signifies a small penis.

I vape at the moment (quit smoking) and my vape does not create a massive cloud - less than an a drag on a cigarette.

WhatWeDoInTheShadow · 08/05/2023 13:12

I think I'm quite lucky with where I live as I very rarely smell smoke or vapes.

I think the rules are already there, like no smoking or vaping indoors. No smoking or vaping on train platforms. I imagine platform guards seem as if they "couldn't care less" because that's a job where you have to pick your battles. I've seen hideous behaviour on trains and in stations which go way beyond vaping on the platform. I imagine they don't want to pick fights with peaceful (although annoying) behaviour

Jonei · 08/05/2023 13:13

Indeed. I think the majority who vape like this go largely unnoticed. Occasionally I see someone with the huge clouds of smoke. But not that often.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 08/05/2023 13:14

YANBU but smokers and vapers are selfish so it won’t change.

People who create massive clouds with vapes are people who don't vape properly

MrsDoylesDoily · 08/05/2023 13:14

Nah, doesn't bother me as long as it's out in the open air and not indoors.

Big difference between passive smoking and vape clouds - someone else vaping will have zero impact on anyone else's health

What a stupid comment. Many people, especially over the age of 30-40 vape as a smoking cessation tool. The NHS has even promoted it as such. It's far less selfish to vape as the health risks to date have been extremely low compared to smoking. Nicotine is highly addictive and moving from smoking to vaping should be supported

Tidsleytiddy · 08/05/2023 13:23

I think the fact that more people are vaping is a good thing. We don’t know the long term effects but we know for sure smoking cigarettes kills you. I think if pubs want to survive they need to allow drinkers to vape. Pubs are too focused on the food/kids/dogs side of things. If you want food go to a restaurant. Pubs and for drinking, smoking (vaping) and socialising. I expect I’ll be flamed but that’s my opinion

CordyLines · 08/05/2023 13:25

Some people have such anger and a massive sense of superiority. It jumps off the page. I am sure all those who are rabidly opposed to vaping are just absolutely purrrfect in their own lives. Am I right?

Vaping is definitely not as anti social as cig smoking. There are other far more impactful things to get riled about really.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 13:25

This 'smoking cessation tool'

Are you supposed to wean yourselves off that too.... or are you just swapping one addiction for another?

I think it's more to do with their set up. The clouds are deliberate.

The addiction is to nicotine just like drinking loads of coffee is an addiction to caffeine

Supposed to?

People can do what they want.

I don't intend to give up ever.

I like it.

Selfish?

Quite a sweeping statement.

I might be a lot of things. But selfish isn't one of them.

It’s selfish, and they’re just addicts. They need to learn some self control and stop.
