To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

As the parent of DCs including teens I think what should be banned is all the sweetie flavours and colours of vapes. Just like the alcohol industry and alcopops, sweetie flavours, designs and pricing of vapes are designed by the tobacco industry to deliberately target children and young people and get them hooked. It's working. How many of them would take up vaping if all vapes were just tobacco flavoured and looked dull? I also think they should be as expensive as cigarettes and be plastered with health warnings. I hate the things as much as cigarettes. I grew up with a parent who smoked and it was awful. Vapes aren't much better and they are reeling in the next generation like child catchers.

Tidsleytiddy · 08/05/2023 13:30

I was n a pub last week where vaping is “banned” so I was puffing my vape by stealth. The woman sitting next to us but facing away was doing a fake cough whilst taking food off her plate and chucking it on the pub floor for the dog. Tell me who’s the bigger pest

gogohmm · 08/05/2023 13:31

I have a bigger issue with smoking in back gardens, you can't get away from that. At a previous house they were smoking cannabis every weekend too, police not interested

catgirl1976 · 08/05/2023 13:31

The laws on vaping and smoking are not the same. Some posters seem to be saying they are. There are now laws that cover vaping in public places.

Organisations may have their own policies e.g. no vaping in x restaurant or on x trains but there’s no law on this it’s individual policies

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 13:32

Don't give up 'ever'

That's cool

Clarabe1 · 08/05/2023 13:34

Vaping doesn’t bother me in the least. Cigarette smoke is horrid and I say that as a ex smoker. I think you need to give people a break. There are far more anti social things like alcohol for one! Don’t be so judgy.

People who create massive clouds with vapes are people who don't vape properly

And what's with the no nicotine vaping?? My nieces partner vapes - a huge billowing cloud type - with no nicotine in it. Why?! What is the effing point?! I vape as part of quitting smoking after spending way to many years trying every other method on the market - I don't get those that do it just for the gross fruity flavour (which I really don't like, but thats a good thing as I don't want to love it!)

I was really shocked to go into Coop last week and discover the nicotine disposable vapes on special offer!! I would have thought the rules would be similar to tobacco - but seems not.

You. Why should anyone, but especially asthmatics, people with long covid, kids and pregnant women, have to breathe in toxic and irritating chemicals while they’re having their lunch?

My quote @Tidsleytiddy didn’t work, but probably no point anyway as I guess anyone with breathing problems is just a big old faker

Go to a restaurant then. What? I’ve got to tolerate a slobbering dog having food chucked on the floor for it? All wrong.

Where do you eat your lunch? I have never seen anyone vaping in a restaurant. It’s banned in eating places. Where on earth are you eating??

Tidsleytiddy · 08/05/2023 13:40

Sounds like in pubs.

It will take some time for research, policy and law to catch up with the relatively new addictive vaping industry and by then it will be too late for many.

It was a (failed) reply to someone standing up for her right to do just that! And complaining about someone else’s irrelevant dog feeding, which I agree is a bit disgusting but doesn’t actually risk other peoples’ health in the same way.

Tidsleytiddy · 08/05/2023 13:42

It does if someone slips on the food

Scarletthoo2 · 08/05/2023 13:43

I've vaped for the last 8 years when I quote smoking at 20 and that was before vaping was popular. I use a vape I fill myself with own liquid. Now, even children are vaping!! Those elf bars are absolutely horrendous. I tried one once and I coughed for days and days, yet with my own vape and low nicotine strength, it hasn't affected me at all. The elf bars have been banned in most supermarkets due to the harmful nature. I've had friends smoke the disposables and cough up blood etc. I don't believe vaping or smoking should be banned, but people need to consider others. Not even 20 years ago 50% of the population used to smoke.

It's now almost directed at young adults and teenagers with the colourful body's and 'tasty' liquid, even I don't like them.

elevenplusdilemma · 08/05/2023 13:43

@nidgey how can you be so sure that vaping poses zero threat to others' health? Sure, there a very few (if any) reported health risks from passive vaping besides the obvious problems for asthma sufferers etc. But is that not because it's still so new?

Very few people who suffer serious health issues due to smoking (or indeed passive smoking) become ill as soon as they are exposed to it. Many smoked for 20+ years before suffering with lung disease and cancers etc.
If in 20 years' time we can conclude that inhaling warmed, synthetic liquids directly into our lungs poses no health risk, I'll eat my hat.

The dog feeding isn’t irrelevant tho is it. It’s someone thinking they can do what they like regardless of others which brings us back to what people think about vaping. I might’ve been allergic to the dog (I wasn’t) but wtf is it doing in the pub and that’s ok but puffing a vape isn’t.

BatildaB · 08/05/2023 13:46

When I get a lungful or two of someone else’s cigarette smoke or vape steam I often end up having to use an inhaler that day and the next. I don’t like taking an inhaler, it makes me jittery, and I don’t like wheezing as it feels like it extends the long covid lung issues I’ve got everytime it gets triggered. So annoying to see people proudly talking about sneaky vaping in places where it’s banned.

You are. Your vaping was causing her harm. Her dog eating on the floor was not causing you harm (unless you were also about to eat off the same floor or have a dog allergy).

OP posts:
BatildaB · 08/05/2023 13:47

People allergic to dogs probably don’t go to dog friendly pubs. Just as people with lung issues might expect that a pub which bans vaping is a safe and pleasant place for them to have a meal

elevenplusdilemma · 08/05/2023 13:48

Tidsleytiddy · 08/05/2023 13:42

It does if someone slips on the food

Unless the dog is unusually un-doglike, there wouldn't be any food left on the floor for anyone to slip on.

Ridiculous. I think you’ve assumed I was bellowing great plumes of vapour. I was not. It was because she smelt something fruity which was the vape. The vapour was nowhere near her but obvs enough for her to get the merest whiff. It was a complete over reaction but it was ok for us to have to look at the pissing dog.

notangelinajolie · 08/05/2023 13:50

I think cigarette smoke stinks but vape smell is on a whole different level for me. It’s so sweet and sickly and genuinely makes me sick when I smell it.
