To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

Throwing food on the floor in a public place is absolutely revolting as was the dog snaffling it up.

GoodChat · 08/05/2023 11:49

The rules for vaping are the same as smoking

They aren't though.

It's illegal to smoke in a car with under 18s, its not illegal to vape in a car with under 18s.

I was n a pub last week where vaping is “banned” so I was puffing my vape by stealth. The woman sitting next to us but facing away was doing a fake cough whilst taking food off her plate and chucking it on the pub floor for the dog. Tell me who’s the bigger pest

You. And if you’d done that where I manage you would have been chucked out with no refund.

This is exactly what I mean about smokers and vapers. They’re just selfish and entitled little addicts with no self control.

BraveFaceScaredInside · 08/05/2023 14:19

There's a long way down from their horses of some people on here!

Gtsr443 · 08/05/2023 14:23

It will take some time for research, policy and law to catch up with the relatively new addictive vaping industry and by then it will be too late for many.

Absolutely and the primary victims are children and young people.
It was always cynical - all these bullshit flavours. Alcopop style marketing. The vaping industry knew exactly who they were pitching at.

Bet your business is doing well. Jeez. Get a grip

PoorOldHorse · 08/05/2023 14:33

Hyperbolically calling for things you personally don't like to be banned should be...er...banned. I'm getting a bit fed up with it now.

It has already caught up. Vaping has been about for ages, you just see it more now
95% safer than smoking. If someone is going from smoking to vaping then please support them, it's one of the best things they can do for their health
People using a vape should also be able to use a separate area away from cigarettes, both for harm reduction and also because it doesn't trigger you back into smoking
Nobody seems to object to nicotine inhalers or gum or patches, vaping is just a nicotine replacement a lot of the time

"in contrast to the known harm from secondhand smoke, there’s no evidence so far of harm to bystanders from exposure to e-cigarette vapour. The many harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke are either not contained in e-cigarette vapour at all..."

People moaned about smoking indoors, that got banned, then they moaned about smoking outdoors. Now there's a much safer option for the people using it and for people that might occasionally walk past someone using it and people still don't like that... it makes someone who has just quit smoking think "fuck it, I'll just go back to the fags then if it's no safer and people still whinge at me"

Keygraer · 08/05/2023 14:40

I hate people vaping indoors and anyone hovering outside doorways puffing out their shit that I have to walk through.

I don't give a crap if they're out of my way puffing away looking like the trash that they are.

EngTech · 08/05/2023 14:42

I don’t smoke, never have but it is nice not to have my clothes smelling of tobacco smoke etc.

Being Devils Advocate on this, if smoking / vaping was totally banned, where would the shortfall in Tax Revenue come from?

Yes it would improve the health aspects etc of people and reduce tobacco / vaping illnesses but that is 10 to 40 years away before any benefits are seen from a NHS point of view

Chancellor would have to make up the shortfall from somewhere though 😳

DiscoDragon · 08/05/2023 14:48

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 12:18

@DiscoDragon nope. Not noticed that....at all

Where on earth do you live??

In Devon! However, I have also come across people wearing far too much perfume in other places such as Cornwall, Northumbria and Cumbria and on planes whilst travelling. I'm fairly certain it probably happens in a lot of places.

The tax revenue on vaping products is VAT only (no excise tax / duty like there is for tobacco). The savings to the NHS would more than outweigh the loss of tax revenue.
Also, the companies supplying / manufacturing vaping products would turn their hand to something else instead, so there would be tax revenue from another hopefully more ethical source.

It’s selfish, and they’re just addicts. They need to learn some self control and stop.

Wow.

Vegetus · 08/05/2023 15:03

Let's ban booze I'm sure the environmental costs are higher, NHS costs are higher and it turns a lot of people into violent morons.

Can I also ban brown cars because I find them unsightly to look at.

RagingWoke · 08/05/2023 15:05

I feel the same about awful perfume, but wouldn't call for all perfume to be banned. Vape clouds aren't the same as second hand smoke from a cigarette and honestly I'd smell 100 ELF bars over some of the god awful perfumes out there.

I did see a mumsnet worthy overreaction to a vape cloud in the wild recently. Woman maybe mid/late forties saw my friend vaping (on the street, perfectly acceptable), stopped in her tracks and did a massive tut and took a breath in then ran by us waving her arms frantically. She almost ran into an old guy minding his own business because she was so intent on staring us down. I imagine a few posters here doing the same thing.

Lol, I've seen the odd person do this. They translate their rage to the real world. And look like absolute twats doing so. It's funny watching them though.

I don't give a crap what you think about it either. Lets face it, someone who thinks its ok to refer to other people as trash, aren't people whose thoughts are worth listening to.

Or maybe she had a common condition like asthma or COPD that is triggered by walking through a cloud of chemicals and particles, and she’d rather look like a twat than spend the rest of the day wheezing. Glad it amuses you though.

She should have saved her energy then rather than rushing about like a dramatic twat. Doesn't sound like the actions of an asthmatic. Sounds like the actions of a twat.

PauseTheRain · 08/05/2023 15:27

Inside - not on. Outside - meh. Wish covid had a scent, then maybe some of those up in arms about someone vaping outside may stop actively advocating for intentionally infecting others!

Shodan · 08/05/2023 15:35

Why is there always mention of 'clouds' of smoke/vapour outside a supermarket in these repetitive threads? Is it compulsory? I've been shopping in all manner of supermarkets for 38 years or so and never had to walk through even a wisp of smoke/vapour, let alone these "clouds" that such posters experience.

Anyway while we're at demanding things be banned- farting in public should be banned imo. And spitting. And people who have clearly bathed in perfume or aftershave. Also drinking alcohol, especially 'cheeky' alcohol. All offensive and show that they have No Self Control, the rapscallions.

RagingWoke · 08/05/2023 15:38

@BatildaB there are very few ingredients in eliquid. I cant imagine that many people have asthma severe enough a single whiff will incapacitate them, at least no more so than the exhaust fumes and general particulates in the air. And this lady was on a busy central London street, next to a building site, bus stops and train station... my mates small vape cloud was the least offensive thing happening.

Fully with @Jonei here, it was just a twat acting twattishly.

There’s no legislation covering vaping. Nor should there be, it’s essentially steam.

Do people advocate for intentionally infecting others with covid? Or do you mean they don't take enough care to stay away from others when they have covid?
