To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

My MIL took up vaping to quit smoking and it gave her asthma - the jury is out as to whether it is actually harmful.

It is already isn't it?

It's not illegal, I don't think, but most places choose to ban it.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 11:50

I've just googled

Not looking good!!

MissyB1 · 08/05/2023 11:52

Yes it bloody well should be banned and we should adopt the NZ approach. Kids at school now vaping their silly heads off - with God knows what future health impact. And walking through clouds of vape 🤮 No idea how asthmatics cope with that!

hennybeans · 08/05/2023 11:52

Vaping and smoking are both foul.

I visit a friend once a week who lives in a small flat and her next door neighbour chain smokes. My friend’s flat stinks of smoke. When I come home, dh says all he can smell on me is smoke. I have to air my coat outside and change my clothes. It’s really gross.

Vaping is terrible because it’s so much more accepted than smoking. It’s more appealing to teens who might not ever touch a cigarette. Plus it’s easier to just have one puff here and there on the sly so people do it anywhere and everywhere, whereas a cigarette needs to be smoked in its entirety at once.

I really think all vaping should be banned completely. We could have had a generation with very few smokers if vaping hadn’t come along.

DiscoDragon · 08/05/2023 11:54

I can't say that I've ever experienced vape clouds when out in public personally. I started vaping last year as an aid to quit smoking, I only do it in my own back garden and I've not noticed that it particularly smells. My partner still smokes and he stinks every time he comes in from outside.

The thing I've been noticing more and more out in public these days is how many people are walking around utterly drenched in perfume, I'll be in the supermarket frozen aisle and someone will walk by and they absolutely reek of flowery chemicals, it's so bad I can taste it and it makes me cough and gag. I'd rather walk through cigarette smoke than the clouds of perfume stench.

Topseyt123 · 08/05/2023 11:56

Smoking should be banned but vaping doesn't bother me at all.

My mother (in her eighties) was a lifelong , dyed in the wool chain smoker until last Christmas when pneumonia nearly killed her. She now vapes and uses a nicotine patch. It is far, far, far more pleasant to be in her house with her now than it was when she was billowing clouds of actual smoke. With her, going over to the vape was the best we could hope for. Give me vapers any day.

Wellhellother · 08/05/2023 11:57

Completely agree - both are horrendously anti social

MunchMunch · 08/05/2023 11:57

YANBU
Ds2 (13) goes to the footy and some bloke two seats away vapes all the time during the 90 minutes they're there. Of course ds always gets the wind blowing it in his direction 🙄 he hates it but he goes with his friends so won't say anything to him.

The amount of kids that vape now is horrendous! None of the ones I know smoked cigarettes before taking up vaping but the pull of candy floss flavour vape is just too hard for them to pass up - ensuring the next generation of addicts that they'll rake the tax in from in the future.

Yes, it’s fucking rank and comes with serious health issues.

Do what you like in your own home, but out and about you can put up with people judging you for the horrific smell.

And stop with the whataboutism already.

Judge away.

I'm not giving it up. I will vape in my home. And when I'm out.

Jonei · 08/05/2023 12:00

Yep. It fucking stinks. Don't these people wash properly or something.

Perhaps not! Or maybe it's because so many products are so strongly scented now? I don't wear perfume at all any more because I find it too much on top of the smell of my soap/deodorant/hair products/laundry podwer etc and I only use the gentle/lightly scented and non-bio products because of sensitive skin. I think a lot of people must be using a whole bunch of heavily scented products.

SlashBeef · 08/05/2023 12:08

There's a couple of parents that do it outside our school gates and despite being asked not to they persist. It's so obnoxious.

A cacophony of smells.

CoatesCat · 08/05/2023 12:15

I was back in New zealand last Christmas and loads of teenagers were vaping

IrregularChoiceFan · 08/05/2023 12:16

I don't know where people are going to have this as such a big issue in their lives. I very rarely come across a smoker unless I actively walk to the smoking shelter at work to find someone. I hardly ever see them outside of shops either.

Vapes I see more often but can't say I notice the smell of them all that much. I never see them inside, the wind has usually taken the cloud before it gets anywhere near my face.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 12:18

@DiscoDragon nope. Not noticed that....at all

Where on earth do you live??

manontroppo · 08/05/2023 11:38

Vaping clouds are foul -they are like horrific air freshener on steroids. Would love to move towards a NZ model where vaping is only available on prescription and it’s only unflavoured.

The environmental impact of disposable vapes is also horrific.

Caping isn’t only available on prescription in NZ. I am just back from visiting in laws and I vape myself.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 12:20

There's a difference between smelling something on someone's skin as they walk past and a vapour trail that you inhale as it's floating via been blown out

Nobody is blowing out perfume as you walk behind them

blahblahblah1654 · 08/05/2023 12:21

I agree. I get vaping isn't as damaging as smoking but it's not fair for other people to have to breathe in that muck. Despite what many people say, I'm sure there will be long term health implications to inhaling artificial crap. As much as air pollution can cause lung cancer.

Throwncrumbs · 08/05/2023 12:24

titbumwillypoo · 08/05/2023 11:40

You're completely correct as long as other polluting things like cars are banned at the same time. A cigarette produces 14g of co2, a gallon of petrol makes 8,887 grams of CO2. And as for trains on 177 grams per passenger mile you seem to be directing your ire at the wrong thing.

So the person on the train AND vaping is even worse for the environment by your standards 😂

It's offensive.

Perfume should be banned

mamabear715 · 08/05/2023 12:41

I'm (still) a smoker. I don't smoke near anyone. I'll walk a long way from a station entrance after a long journey to make sure no-one's breathing my smoke. I don't even smoke in my house, only in the garden.
Vapers, on the other hand, seem to think it's fine to infect everyone with their shit raspberry smells etc! I don't get it..

MayBeeJuneSoon · 08/05/2023 12:43

@Jonei if people were out blasting perfume or deodorant in my face then I would agree! But they aren't....

Yes, this is my point exactly. Thank you for being so considerate - TBF, most smokers are. It's been a long time since I remember being bothered by fag smoke in a public place. Vapers on the other hand...
